Beware of Heatwaves

This summer we anticipate a hot summer with temperatures that will be above seasonal normal temperatures. Heat waves are devastating because the body is not accustomed to really hot temperatures and the unwary may have some nasty surprises.

It has been predicted for some time. Several regions of the country will be subjected to major heatwaves. During these periods, the weather changes rapidly, leading to high temperatures or very high levels of humidity which our body adapts to with difficulty. The humidex is used to express the combined effect of humidity and a high temperature to describe the heat that will be felt. Some discomforts occurs when the humidex exceeds 86 degree and becomes overwhelming when it reaches and exceeds 104 degree. At all times, even at rest, our bodies produce heat and tries to maintain a constant temperature of 98 degree. In warm weather, this temperature can vary from a few degrees, especially when doing physical activities and our bodies need to break free from that heat. It uses three progressive ways to do so. By radiation, releasing infrared rays; convection by transferring the skin heat directly to the ambient air, and by evaporation, producing sweat which cools the body through evaporation. The speed with which this evaporation occurs is related to the level of relative humidity and when it reaches about 90 percent, the evaporation may cease and the body temperature will increase. Beware of the heat, it can have consequences that will give you the shivers!

Skin irritation

Irritation due to heat, consist of red rashes which is characterized by the appearance of small red spots about the size of a pinheads on the face, neck and chest, resulting from the temporary obstructions of sweat glands. The elevation of body temperature caused by a fever or high heat is the cause. This type of irritation affects mainly children and disappear as soon as the temperature decreases.

Cramps

You are doing a strenuous exercise accompanied by profuse perspiration, and you drink plenty to offset your water loss. You do not however compensate your mineral losses. The working muscles are most likely to be affected, during or after exercise, by cramps, short, intermittent and often severe. Go to a cool area, open your clothes and drink cool fresh water with added salt, about a table spoon is about right for 4 liters of water.

Exhaustion

Lack of water and salt after several days of exposure to heat or after a prolonged exercise in a very hot environment can cause a collapse of the body's cooling system. The skin becomes cold and clammy. Profuse sweating, weakness, dizziness, intense thirst, blurred vision, nausea, headache and body temperature greater than 99 degree, are among the symptoms. Heat exhaustion is due to the loss of water tissues and minerals, caused by an abundant perspiration. The person must be moved to a cool place in the shade, must drink cold water, ideally salted water, be ventilated and doused with fresh water.

Syncope

The syncope due to heat is manifested by dizziness and loss of consciousness due to a blood flow decrease to the brain while the person is standing. It is a malaise created by a significant loss of fluid and inadequate absorption of water, causing a drop in blood pressure, Consequence of a larger blood flow in the lower limbs. The symptoms disappears quickly when the victim is shielded from the harsh conditions, lays down and drinks water in small quantities.

Heatstroke

Heat stroke is the most severe condition and requires a medical emergency intervention. The person has been exposed to long to intense heat or to the sun, without shelter, or refreshment, and didn't hydrate adequately. The body has exhausted all of its reserves of water and salt and stop sweating. Heat stroke can occur suddenly or may arise out of a heat exhaustion. The body temperature increases and can exceed 41 degree. The skin becomes red, hot and dry. The person experiences fatigue, headache and vestige. May become confused, delirium, fainting, fall into coma and, in some cases die or be subjected to irreversible injuries. If you believe someone is a victim of heat stroke, seek immediate medical attention. Meanwhile, remove his extra clothes, sprinkle him with water and put him in an area where their is fresh air. If conscious, make him drink cool water in small quantities. Do not overestimate your ability to withstand extreme heat. Get yourself some shade and coolness, it's free! Freshen up and hydrated yourself by drinking regularly what is the best for you, water!
