John Fleming has expressed satisfaction at the improvement in the water quality of Lake Rotoiti.John said he has been going to Rotoiti since the mid 40's and over time the quality of the lake water has gradually detreorated. The reason said John is the nutrients flowing through the Ohau CHNANNEL FROM LAKE ROTORUA, WITH THE RESULT THAT OVER THE YEARS THERE HAS BEEN A STEADY BUILD UP OF NUTRIENTS, RESULTING IN MASSIVE WEED GROWTH.
There have been many meetings, and committees set up to solve the problem, but it was not until a team from Waikato University came up with a plan to build a wall in Lake Rotoiti to divert the nutrient laden water from Rotorua. The idea was that the wall would catch the nutrients and divert them down the Kaituna River.
After court hearings and appeals, the Enviroment Court gave consent to build the wall.
John said that it has been built for about a year now, and already residents are noticing an improvement.The wall is a kilometer long and starts at the Ohau channel outlet, which links Lake Rotorua.It is 75m from the shore and raises to just above water level. John said it has been a major engineering project at a cost of about $50 million.
John said that to see such good results in just a year, must be rewarding to all those who made it happen.The project could well be the saving grace of Lake Rotoiti.
John said he knows how hard it can sometimes be to get a worthwhile project off the ground.He has come out of retirement to start a business that was quite foreign to him,INTERNET MARKETING.
