Conserving Energy through Sign Power

Due to the breakneck pace of modern living, it can be very difficult for the average person to concentrate on anything other than his job as he frantically chugs along in the workplace.  Really, when was the last time an employee put the environment in front of vying for that raise or promotion, or forgot about a deadline for a few minutes because he wanted to preserve the planet?  Unfortunately, the wasteful habits of office workers everywhere have transformed places of occupation into yawning resource drains, where employees couldn't care less because they aren't footing the utilities bills, anyway.  Not that this is entirely their fault – most often, it is simple ignorance and forgetfulness that keep them from doing right by the earth.

For instance, light pollution is a by-product of many workplaces, where employees routinely leave the lights on even after they've left, or turn on more lights than they really need.  Lights aren't the only things employees like to keep running.  Office computers are notorious for being left on in screensaver mode, which does the opposite of save the electricity that has to run through the machine to keep it functioning.  Even when computers or other equipment are actually turned off, leaving them plugged in also expends energy, as many of these devices simply go into low-level standby.  Surely, if workers knew any better, they probably would be a little more conscientious about avoiding these bad habits.

Suggestion can be a powerful thing.  Research conducted on the effects of reinforcement on employees has shown that the mere presence of a sign informing people to do something increases the chance that they will do it by up to 54 percent.  Consequently, if you want workers to conserve energy properly, perhaps the cheapest and most effective method of reminding them is with a few energy conservation signs, strategically placed near light switches and electrical equipment.  The more eco-friendly employees will appreciate the signs and observe them accordingly, and in turn encourage their colleagues to do the same.  Even if not every employee is so inclined, it only takes a few considerate souls to turn off the lights and see to it that the office computers are off for the day.  Eventually, energy conservation will become more of the norm than the exception, and another workplace will have been converted to the benefits of going green.

Minimizing electricity usage is the most direct form of energy conservation, but other green practices also indirectly have an impact on preserving our dwindling natural resources.  Energy is expended, for example, when disposable containers have to be manufactured, as oil is one of the primary components of plastic production.  By reducing the need to purchase new plastic supplies, workplaces likewise cut down on the energy required to produce them in turn.  Signs that promote other green practices, such as bringing reusable glasses and mugs instead of buying disposable plastic bottles, are equally efficient in conveying this message.  It is these little reminders, seen constantly by employees as they go about the day, that stand the best chance of converting them to a more enlightened, earth-friendly way to work.
