There are a few ways that you can turn your home into a solar energy home. The first way is to install a solar power system. A solar power system consists of solar panels, a mounting system, wiring, inverter and any other hardware the system requires. This system is the most expensive, but the long term benefits on your pocketbook and the environment are exponential.

Another way you can use the sun's energy is by solar thermal heating. Basically this means that you use the sun's energy to heat water or another substance and this heat is transferred to the water in your home to help reduce the cost to heat water. Solar thermal energy can also be used for things like radiant floor heating.

If your designing a new home there are a lot of ways that you can use solar energy to your benefit, but if your not here are a few things that you can do to the home you already live in.

One of the biggest ways to increase your homes efficiency is with insulation. Solar energy homes are very well insulated, so make sure your home has adequate insulation. In some cases where insulation would be too hard to install an insulating paint can be used.

Make sure your home is sealed up tight so you don't lose any heat in the winter and this will also help keep your home cooler in the summer. You can use caulk, expanding foam, or any other product to help seal your home.

Windows play a big role in an solar energy home. Obviously it's better to have well insulated windows, but if new windows aren't in your budget maybe insulated drapes would help.

If you live in a cold climate you could plant deciduous trees, the kind that their leaves fall off during the winter, in front of the windows to keep sun out during the summer and let sun in during the winter.
