Pondering Phobos Phobias
UFO sightings have seemingly increased over the past year; however, it just might be better reporting. It seems that everyone has a camera now. It's also much easier to make stuff up, photo-shop, airbrush, and a dozen other tricks. Have we been visited before, are we under observation now, and does December 21, 2012 have anything to do with aliens?
One of the more interesting theories centers around the moon of Mars known as Phobos!
Phobos was discovered by astronomer Asaph Hall on August 18, 1877. Phobos is the larger and closer of the two moons of Mars, the other being Deimos. Phobos is seven times as massive as Deimos. It is named after the Greek god Phobos (which means "fear"), a son of Ares (Mars). A small, irregularly shaped object, Phobos orbits about 5,827 miles from the center of Mars. But then the theories get a bit more wild.
Phobos' density is too low to be solid rock and that leads to one theory which says parts of Phobos is hollow!
Hollow you say? Yes, as in maybe it's not a moon type hollow! In the 1960s, the unusual orbital characteristics of Phobos led to speculations that it might be hollow. we're talking scientific evidence, not simply wild guesses. And, it was around 1958 when Russian astrophysicist Iosif Samuilovich Shklovsky, studying the secular acceleration of Phobos' orbital motion, suggested a "thin sheet metal" structure for Phobos, which carried with it the suggestion that Phobos was of artificial origin.
Say what? What's that mean!
Richard Hoagland is the current "stoker of the Phobos phobias". Richard is definitely "out there". Richard is an American author and a proponent of various conspiracy theories about NASA, lost alien civilizations on the Moon and on Mars and other related topics.
His writings claim that advanced civilizations exist or once existed on the moon, Mars and on some of the moons of Jupiter and Saturn, and that NASA and the United States government have conspired to keep these facts secret.
