Beaches around the world are in constant change from tides, storms, hurricanes and the rise of sea level.  In 2005, Hurricane Wilma washed away an almost 8 mile stretch of Riviera Maya's famous beach and devastated the resort towns with powerful force.

One thing that attracts people to Riviera Maya real estate is a love for the beach.  The soft white sands of the Mexican Caribbean lure millions of visitors each year.  So what happens when erosion starts to wash away its powdery shores?  Mexico called in the experts to restore the beaches to their former glory.

The prime beachfront Riviera Maya real estate is getting a makeover.  Mexico, with federal and state funding, has invested over $70 million to complete the restoration and renovation of miles of beaches in Cancun, Cozumel and Playa del Carmen.  Work has been done for the most affected beaches along the coastline from Cancun to Playa del Carmen to restore and maintain the beaches so vital for tourism and Riviera Maya real estate investment.

Two underwater sand banks were dredged and over 6 million cubic meters of sand was collected and deposited along the shore.  Environmental scientists were brought in to monitor and oversee the project. The project is hoped to be an environmentally sensitive and permanent solution.

A ten year maintenance program is in place to prevent erosion and the sand from washing back out to sea.  This monitoring program works to prevent additional erosion through the Beach Recovery Trust.  It is believed that with time, the sand will settle naturally and firmly into place.

The long term and environmentally conscious project has replenished the sand and enhanced the allure of the beautiful Caribbean coastline.  The spectacular beaches that Riviera Maya real estate is known for are back and better than ever now spanning approximately 140 feet.
