Our planet has been annually celebrating World Environmental Day (WED) since 1972. World Environmental Day is organized by the United Nations Environmental Programme (UNEP) with a different theme every year & selecting a host country which is setting an example by its green initiatives.

The theme for WED 2010 is, "Many Species, One Planet, One Future" & the host country is the East African nation, Rwanda. There are more than 10 million species in this world out of which only 2 million have been identified yet. Out of this 2 million, about 17,291 species are on the verge of extinction from little insects to rare mammals. Some even get extinct before they are discovered.

But how did they get extinct? We humans know the answer.

As UNEP says "With our present approach to development, we have caused the clearing of much of the original forest, drained half of the world's wetlands, depleted three quarters of all fish stocks, and emitted enough heat-trapping gases to keep our planet warming for centuries to come. We have put our foot on the accelerator, making species extinctions occur at up to 1000 times the natural rate."

You may know about the food chain system that we learnt in our school days. It had rightly said, that even if a single species is wiped out of the chain it will impact our life. That means even the grass and the grasshoppers in our garden are connected to us in some way or the other.

As we at Wheel The Change have always said, mother Earth takes care of us in her own way and it is our moral and social responsibility to protect her the way she wants.
