Why Chile Is Better Than Haiti At Handling Earthquakes
First Hiati, now Chile, it seems as if the world's seismic activities wont give us a rest. The city, Chile's second-largest, was the closest to the epicenter of the 8.8-magnitude earthquake. At least 723 people have been confirmed dead, with 19 more missing, officials say, with the toll expected to rise.
As devastating as it is, the death toll is a fraction compared to the 220,000 or so deaths in Haiti. This is despite the Chilean earthquake being at least 500 times stronger then the one in Haiti.
Perhaps the Chilean people and government were a lot more alert and ready to face any seismic activities given Chile's past history. An even stronger earthquake in 1960, Chile has developed a seismic design code for new buildings, which has made them better able to stay standing in an earthquake. One thing is for certain however, during hard times like this another devastating act of mother nature is the last thing we need.
The army was called in to help the police force deal with looters, some of whom filled shopping trolleys with groceries while others made off with plasma TVs and other electrical appliances.
Some 160 people were arrested for looting and breaking the curfew, police said on Monday.
Clashes with looters saw one 22-year-old man shot and killed.
And by Monday evening tensions had flared once more, with troops deployed to the streets after a blaze began in a looted supermarket. With already billions of dollars of foreign aid sent to Haiti, Chilean president declares a state of catastrophe. Chile is in dire need of food, medicine, supplies and foreign aid to help fight what they are now facing.
