Why You Should Study the Ingredients in the Daily Products You Use

It seems that we are hearing all the time about questionable ingredients and harmful substances to avoid. The world today is emerging as more chemically infused than before. We deal with artificial ingredients in foods and additives in environmental products. These products include many shampoos, moisturizers, body gels, wax, hair gels, shaving cream, soaps and even cosmetics to name a few. Some of the chemicals that are in these products are diethanolamine, propylene glycol and sodium lauryl sulfate (SLS) which are used as anti freeze and to scrub garage floors as well as degrease engine degreasers.

There are various types of harmful chemicals like carcinogens, volatile organic compounds and phosphates. Any one of these chemicals accompanies a different health risk or disease.

Here are some to be aware of:

Carcinogens can be found in household cleansers and cleaning products. Examples of carcinogens are benzene, formaldehyde, nitrilotriacetic acid and carbon tetrachloride. Research is being done for carcinogens in foods. Cigarette smoke of course is also a leading carcinogen and many are concerned about second hand smoke.

Phosphates can be found in detergents and when disposed improperly, can find the way to drainages or water sources. This can cause water contamination. An example of phosphates is sodium tripolyphosphate. It does not only affect water but also the living things in the sea such as fish, coral reefs and other aquatic animals.

Another growing threat for our health and the ozone layer are volatile organic compounds. Examples of volatile organic compounds are methane, trichloroethylene and chloroform. These things contribute to the destruction of the ozone layer. For instance, methane is a greenhouse gas that is connected to global warming.

Aerosols can be found in hairsprays and other hair products. An aerosol makes chemicals easy to inhale because it joins the air you breathe. These are only some example of harmful chemicals in daily products that we are using. This serves as a warning to be gentle and caring not only for yourself but also for the environment. We should familiarize ourselves with the ingredients used in the cleansers, foods we eat and other household products we use. It is better to be knowledgeable and know the risks and consequences of the things we are using. Always keep in mind that moderation is the key, too much of everything is harmful no matter what. Lastly, be aware of how to dispose our garbage as that is important too.
