The need of having alternative energy sources was felt by us decades ago. University of Florida Statue and Shell Energy have jointly conducted research on trees and biomass by planting Energy Crop Plantation which is the largest in the United States. Over 250,000 native Cottonwoods and the non-invasive eucalyptus together with different row crops like soybeans sprawl over 130 acres of the Energy Crop Plantation area. The University undertook research in collaboration with some agencies and some local groups who are striving to develop future alternative energy sources independent of fossil fuels. These include The Common Purpose Institute, Shell, Department of Energy of US and various individual groups. As an outcome of their ceaseless efforts, this group of super trees got created.
These energy crops which are also called closed loop biomass are fast-growing crops and are good biomass energy supply sources. This research based project is committed to growing crops and biomass energy supplies processing from fast-growing energy crops or closed loop biomass. The research is primarily on the planting of energy crops which are fast-growing crops called closed loop biomass and processing of resultant supplies of biomass energy. The project aims at developing power wood-pulp plants which provide wood-fiber; providing clean biogas to the industries; ethanol development from plants such as sugarcane; and biodiesel fuel production from crops like soybeans.
The petroleum over-dependence of our nation for power has given rise to an urgent need for an alternative energy source to be developed. Penn State University has undertaken special research to develop anl alternative energy source which is practical and which will not cause an increase in the pollution like petroleum products. Such focused research is taking us to a hydrogen-fuelled economy, when the hydrogen power would be a sustainable and clean and endlessly renewable energy resource. This Hydrogen energy can be obtained from crop plants and water and can be continuously renewed. The Penn University seeks to build this sustainable energy resource within the US’ own infrastructure. This assumes great importance in a situation where the world’s supply of oil peaks and ultimately begins to decline. Fuel cells powered by Hydrogen need to be developed commercially to be used as substitutes or together with conventional combustion engines for motor vehicles.
President Bush recently envisaged the concentrated research and development of fivecenters of Sun Grant for this alternative energy initiative. One such center is Oregon State University with government grants of $80 million to be spread over four years span for this special mission. Thus OSU will be the leader in the research for alternate energy sources since it represents Pacific Islands, the US’ Pacific Territories, and the nine Western states. Various teams of leading scientists are doing specific research on alternative energy. One of the projects which deserves a mention here is how to convert straw-like products into an efficient and renewable source of biomass fuel and yet another project is conversion of wood fibers into efficient liquid fuel. According to Edward Ray, OSU President, this pioneering work being done by the their Sun Grant Center is the direct answer to the challenge given by President Bush for achieving energy independence.

It is estimated that our natural resources will be completely depleted within the next 150 years. It is because of this that we as a society need to be actively searching for sources of alternative energy.
Alternative energy, whether it is used to replace fuels such as coal, or to reduce our reliance on petroleum based fuels; alternative energy is one of the most important issues facing society today.
The two most common types of alternative energy are:
* Wind power
* Solar power
Both of these alternative energy sources are harnessed from natural resources, and as such are completely free. Only the equipment and technology cost money, and over time as we advance the costs should be reduced.
It is these free sources of alternative energy that we should be pursuing with the most fervency, so that, eventually, energy can be available to all regardless of income. Below we will take a look at these two most common sources of alternative energy.
Wind Power
Wind power, while a free source of alternative energy, would be the most costly type of renewable energy to power our nation. This is largely in part to the fact that we must first place wind turbines across the country, in enough numbers to provide electricity to communities nationwide, even in areas where the wind velocity is not as strong. The cost of building enough of these turbines to harness the wind's alternative energy would be staggering.
Also these wind turbines are very unsightly and would ruin very beautiful and scenic parts of the country. It should also be noted that they only produce power 1/8 of the time that they are running. That is not very efficient, but we are on the right track, things just need improvement.
Another problem I see with wind turbines is the amount of profit many companies stand to make for putting them in. Individuals are making millions off of this and that is just not right when our well-being is at stake.
However, if you're interested in using wind power as your own source of alternative energy, it is a viable option. Many farms and rural communities use these wind turbines to power themselves. In smaller numbers, the cost of building the turbines pays for itself relatively quickly. But wind energy is only one form of alternative energy. Next, we will look at using solar power as an alternative power source.
Solar Power
Solar power is alternative energy derived from the power of the sun. Solar energy is also completely free, except for the cost of installing the equipment necessary to convert the sun's rays into usable electricity. This equipment is becoming less and less expensive every day. Solar power generally ends up paying for itself within the first few years.
The equipment needed to use solar power as an alternative energy source for your home can be bought at virtually any home improvement store, and can usually be installed in just a few hours. If you don't feel comfortable doing it yourself, there are a great number of contractors available who can install your solar panels and generators for you.
Regardless of which type of alternative energy you choose to use in your own home, the fact remains that we must find a renewable source of energy soon, or be at risk of losing the few natural resources we have left to burn. Contact your Congressman today, and ask what is being done to find a good source of alternative energy; and what you can do to help.

Madison Greene is like anybody else. She is interested in saving the planet and finding alternatives for depleting natural resources. She has done diligent research and found a book that teaches you how you can safely make your own alternative fuel at home for less than one dollar a gallon. There are many different types of alternative energy that you can use on your home and your car. You need to know what these different types of energy are so you can do your homework about them and decide which ones to use.
Using an alternative energy is especially important on your vehicle because on cars and trucks that you use regular gasoline, they are adding to the problems with the environment. Do you know what the definition is for alternative energy?
Alternative energy is where energy is formed using sources that don't harm the environment or deplete the Earth's natural resources. Now that you know what it is you need to know what the different types are. Here are the different types of alternative energy you can use for your home and especially for your cars.
One: Hydro Power - This is formed by using a small water generator that is known as micro-hybrid turbines that are put into the flowing water's stream.
Two: Solar Power - This type of alternative energy is made by converting sunlight into electricity using cells make from silicon, which, when it is exposed to sunlight it will create an electric charge.
Three: Wind Power - This energy is created by a turbine that is placed on a tall tower and uses wind to kinetically produce electricity.
Four: Ethanol - This is one alternative fuel that is made to replace gasoline in vehicles. It is made from ethyl alcohol, which is a common alcohol that is made using corn or wheat.
Five: Biodiesel - This is an alternative fuel that is for petroleum diesel and is made from vegetable oils and animal fats.
Six: Hydrogen - This alternative energy is the most abundant element in the world and it can be made from fossil fuels, biomass or by electrolyzing water.
So, as you can see, there are many different types of alternative energy. You want to do your homework about these types of energy for your home and your vehicle. When using alternative energy you will be able to save money on gas and other things, plus you will be helping to keep the environment as clean as possible. Just remember to do your homework first before you choose what types of energy that you are going to use for your home and your vehicle.

1. Amelot Holdings is a US based company specializing in development of ethanol and biodiesel plants. It establishes relationships between the researchers and suppliers of alternative energy. The company facilitates joint ventures and mergers between the research facilities and the manufacturers of alternative energy. Thus, there is exchange of information and technology which helps to promote the growth of the alternative energy industry.
2. Environmental Power is another alternative energy supplier. It has two subsidiaries namely Microgy and Buzzard Power. Microgy undertakes research and development in the field of alternative energy. It has developed a cost-effective biogas facility by making use of agricultural and plant waste. It focuses on eco-friendly production of renewable energy like biogas to compare with the standards of natural gas. The biogas is used in combustion engines, and for heating homes and offices. Buzzard Power has an 83MW power facility to generate 'green' energy from coal waste.
Environmental Power has been in existence from the year 1982 and has a long history of development in the field of clean energy. The company has developed and operated municipal waste projects and hydroelectric plants and assisted in clean gas generation and energy recovery. It has a team of experts from the agriculture and finance sectors to manage the business and help its growth and expansion.
3. Intrepid Technology and Resources Incorporated (ITR) processes animal waste into natural gas as an alternative energy resource. America's supply of natural gas is depleting. ITR believes that the two billion ton animal waste produced every year can be used to generate natural gas to tide over the deficit. Their 'organic waste digesters' built close to the sites of the organic waste, produce clean methane gas which is a viable option to natural gas. The company is based in Idaho but plans to expand its operations to the whole country.
4. Nathaniel Energy generates energy from waste matter. The company has devised s system known as Total Value Preservation System (TVPS) which sees the potential of waste materials to generate energy. Industrial waste matter which would have otherwise been discarded or destroyed is being put to optimum use to recover the trapped energy. The production costs towards generation of alternative energy are equivalent to the costs incurred by a company to install pollution control systems and preventions. TVPS is an innovative technology which recovers valuable resources that other processes fail to do.
There are many companies such as those listed above, which use innovative technology to augment our diminishing supply of natural resources by adopting environmentally safe methods to generate alternative energy or renewable energy. There is a need to invest in research towards finding alternative sources of energy as a replacement to fossil fuels. The future of the world depends on industries which can help to achieve this goal. The governments of the various countries need to co-operate in terms of exchange of ideas and information to solve the problems of global warming and environmental pollution. Alternative energy suppliers like the above mentioned companies can play a major role in this process and the government can promote these companies by providing them subsidies.

Our country reels from energy-related problems. The price of gasoline continues to rise. More threats come from the unpredictable economic and political conditions in the Middle East, Iraq, Iran and other countries. If anything, these problems have indicated the extent of dependence of the United States economy on imported oil.
The need to chart new directions on the matter of energy production and supply has become unavoidable for Americans. We need to cut our dependence on imported oil and find viable alternative energy sources. Experts contend that the time for relatively cheap fuel is over, and that we must be ready to pay for its escalating cost unless we succeed in developing cost-effective alternative energy sources. With our technologically-advanced and energy-dependent society, the need for fresh technologically and financially viable alternative energy cannot be avoided.
The environmentalists add their voices to the call for a swift to alternative fuel due to damages inflicted on the environment by petroleum-generated power. Globan warming, water and air pollution have been identified as some of the many environmental risks we expose ourselves to from extensive use of fossil fuel.
Nevertheless, we must also exercise caution in developing alternative energy. Coal, for example, is not inspiring. It is dirty, dangerous to extract, and is also harmful to the environment. Surely, there must be other alternative sources of energy that are safer to process and more environment-friendly, and to which we must turn our primary focus.
Other countries are likewise hard pressed to pursue an alternative energy agenda. It can be assumed that they also contribute to the worsening global climate, and the responsibility for addressing the problem needs to be shared by all. European countries and the United States have made initial advances in the search for alternative energy towards not only reducing their dependence on fossil fuel but also on cleaning up the environment.
The developing countries need to follow our lead in collecting relevant research data and developing alternative energy technologies. The level of government and private research and development collaboration in this field augurs well for strengthening our technological edge. Added benefits thus await from bright prospects of marketing these technologies to other countries.
Other alternative sources of energy that continue to merit further investigation are hydro-electric technology, bio-fuels from trees and beans, natural gas, atomic energy plants, hydrogen cells, and solar energy. Currently getting extra attention from experts is determining the overall viability of wind and solar energy, as well as of generating electricity with hydrogen.
Expectations are high that more sources of better quality alternative energy can be found and put in operation while research and development in this field continues. By then we can look forward to ride our cars and sustain our technologically advanced societies with less fear of further damaging our environment.

The world has been noticing alternative energy companies over the last few years. Why, you may ask.The answer is "for many reasons."

Reason #1: Petroleum products as an energy source create pollution.

Reason #2: Alternative energy companies strive to create pollution free energy.

Reason #3: People fear the danger and instability of nuclear power.

Reason #4: Alternative energy companies strive to use the forces of nature to create energy.

Reason #5: Fossil fuels are a non-renewable source of energy.

Reason #6: Since alternative energy companies use nature to create energy, it is an endlessly renewable source.

Reason #7: The profits from conventional power is cyclicle; they may surge when supplies are short and fall when supplies are great.

Reason #8: Alternative energy companies continue to grow as new technologies are discovered.

There are strong feelings among the public that alternative energy companies will dominate the future of energy creation. Right now, it appears that the oil companies are reaping all the profits.

But the world sees that technological growth is the key to the future. Companies such as Microsoft have set the standard that advances only come through change.

Outdated, inefficient methods must be discarded and new technologies introduced. This is how technology will affect the future. And alternative energy companies will control that technology.

The public is willing to pay for cutting edge discoveries. As the costs of traditional energy continues to sky-rocket, alternative energy companies will be the ones to benefit as they supply alternate technologies to fossil fuel.

Alternative energy companies offer a chance for the world to not only survive, but to grow. For, if things remain the same, we will not be able to continue growing, or, we can grow but burn up all our energy. As we grow using fossil fuels, we are poisoning the earth.

Alternative energy companies can offer a solution that does not require a choice between survival and growth. As we look more and more to nature, we can find better methods to create energy.

Alternative energy companies will use the mechanism of capitalism to create energy through alternate sources.

If each person used nature to create energy, it would take years for the concept to grow. But alternative energy companies rally resources of many to make it happen faster. They are uniting these resources into one whole. They are not only interested in discovering alternative fuel sources, but also in promoting their use. The discovery of these alternates is meaningless if they are not used.

Alternative energy companies inform people of the benefits of alternative energy and try to convince them to use it. If they are able to make a profit in the meantime, all the better. Correct?

Alternative energy companies are striving to have the world recognize that continued use of traditional energy is wrong. They will do this by showing us the "alternate". They supply the solution to the "don't grow or grow and burnout" dilemma.

As in a storm, if you move away from the center, conditions worsen; the closer you stay focused in the center, the safer you will be.

If you are concerned about how modernization affects the environment and if you are looking for new investments, investments in alternative energy mutual funds may be the perfect solution.

Alternate energy mutual funds invest in companies that are developing ways to produce energy without harming the environment. You can join the huge movement of people who are interested in making money from alternative energy.

The world comes closer and closer to an energy crisis as the non-renewable sources of energy such as coal and oil, which are are major sources of power, become more depleted. This is the reason so many companies are scrambling to develop alternative sources of energy. They need money to do this, and alternative energy mutual funds can supply the money.

A mutual fund is an investment company that looks for small companies that have growth potential and then it invests in them. Remember the Microsoft story: a small company that was started in a garage.

Alternative energy mutual funds specialize in investing in companies that develop alternative energy. Some do this solely because they believe it is better for the earth. But others see alternative energy as the only option for power for the future.

Alternative energy is culled from the natural resources of the earth, such as wind, sun and air. Unlike the non-renewable sources of energy, these sources will continue into the future. People who invest in alternative energy mutual funds may not have to worry about their future! But there are risks to be considered with alternative energy mutual funds.

But all businesses have risk.

There are some viable alternative energy technologies that are not yet cost effective. The alternative energy mutual funds need to be selective about which firms they invest in. They have to make sure the company meets the environmental standards they may have, as well as the ability to use new technogies.

Change is inevitable, and everything in the world changes constantly, including people, their governments and their policies. These changes affect the companies that alternate energy mutual funds invest in.

How a company develops and grows will be determined by factors such as opportunities available and risks encountered. It is possible to make or lose a lot of money. But this, like everything in life is a gamble.

Alternative energy mutual funds have been primarily investing in other countries so that they can keep their investments diversified and take advantage of growth opportunities. But there are foreign exchange risks in this.

Alternative energy mutual funds are run by human beings, who are always prone to mistakes. One of those mistakes is to think they are investing in a company that has an alternate source of energy when all they are doing is adding additives to change the chemical makeup of the energy source. This is not a joke. Since the regulation of these companies is not strong, scams like this can happen.

There are many more riks that may have to be faced when considering investing in alternative energy mutual funds. But sometimes the end, helping the earth, is worth the risk.

Wind power is conversion of energy from the wind to be used productively in many ways. There are many machines, wind turbines, which transform the kinetic energy of the wind into mechanical energy by converting it. The mechanical energy then works with the kinetic energy so that it becomes balanced into a mechanical system. Once this mechanical energy is turned into electricity this system is then known as a wind turbine.
Horizontal Axis and Vertical Axis are the two different types of wind turbines that can be found. The Horizontal Axis Wind Turbine is the more popular of the two and features a main rotor shaft and a generator which are located at the top of the turbine. There is a gearbox attached to most of these turbines, so that more electricity can be generated by the quicker turning of the blades. The turbine are tall towers with blades which create turbulence for power, and turn either upwards or downwards. In high winds, upward blades can crack and breakdown as they are not able to withstand these conditions for too long. Downward blades are in line and face the wind so they last longer. They are even durable against the high winds so do not break which helps to keep down the cost.
The Different Types of Horizontal Axis Wind Turbines
Windmills - They usually consist of four or more blades that are normally short. There are some that are made up of wood and were first used to grind up grain. Winds rotate the mechanism of the blades which turned a mill that the grains ran through so that it was crushed.
Rural Windmills - These originated from Australia and were later built all over the U.S.A. Farmers found these windmills useful in pumping water into the fields and electricity for the barns. There are several blades on this type of windmill, which are still in use today and can be seen in the fields. So that electricity could be carried for lighting or even a radio, they were constructed using metal.
Modern Turbines - These are used today and what we see standing in our fields. The features are of three blades which become pointed towards the ends. The reasons for this unusual shape is after trials and testing, they proved to be the strongest for exceeding up to 6 times more wind velocity, which allowed for high efficiency and was more reliable.
This sort of wind turbine has many advantages including being bendable, durable, it has stability, is strong and also tall. On the other end, the disadvantages are that they are not as in huge demand, they are unable to operate if they are too close to the ground, installing them is a difficult job as well as transporting them by sea. There are also concerns that they can affect radar, and they can suffer from strutual damage during high storms and with wear and tear.
So as you can see, there are good and bad points to buying and installing these types of turbines. They do work so whether you choose to have one or several if you own a field is up to you. They are good to help generate electricity and many other things that we would might well have to do without.

The first thing most people think of in terms of where to go to college are the big name universities. The courses offered at these institutions are geared to getting you into a career where you will earn a salary in the six digits. They have that reputation, but it is still up to the student to be prepared to make it in the business world. So even the students who are invited to attend these elite schools have to just hope they will land that great job.

If you only consider attending one of these types of colleges, you may be limiting your choices and not opening yourself up to an education choice that may be just the right one for you.

What we mean are programs that are offered in community colleges that may not be offered in the large universities. For those who may not be looking for the traditional courses because they may not be the choice for them, these colleges may offer new and different alternatives that may keep the world running.

What we mean are programs in alternative energy.

These are educational programs that focus on coursework necessary for a career in the field of alternative energy. These courses prepare a student for a job in the real world.

Why is it that community colleges offer these kinds of courses?

Community colleges have traditionally focused on non-traditional courses and also those that are more practical in nature. That is why community colleges attract students who are looking for work in the real world.

Traditional colleges and universities charge extremely high tuition for the courses they offer. Since community colleges are subsidized by the government, they can offer courses at lower tuition rates. The reason governments offer subsidies is so that lower income students can have an opportunity for higher education. This is also the reason these schools offer programs in alternative energy

What happens once a student completes such a program?

Students who have completed such a program can go on to work in the field of alternative energy. The need for new kinds of energy is spurring governments and industry to invest in this field. This will create many new jobs that graduates of community colleges in the field of alternative energy will be ready for.

Community colleges who offer these programs will help build a bright future for these students by training them to become employees in a competitive field that will help the world.

Wind turbines have been popping up all over the world. It isn't just homeowners or regular people trying to find alternative energy, but countries and large organizations. There is a demand and people are turning to wind power as a way to meet the alternative energy needs.
Wind power is an interesting idea. There are people who have been installing wind turbines and then taking themselves "off the grid." This means they disconnect themselves from the electric company and never deal with them again. No bills, no notes, no phone calls. Nothing.
This sounds like a great idea, but it requires installing wind turbines, which can be costly. However, there are ways to make some money back. In the United States, there are many states that offer tax breaks by using alternative energy. You will save money if you qualify and you will make your money back faster. There are also some states that allow homeowners to sell the extra energy back. These are "net metering laws." When using the wind turbine, the electricity meter will actually spin backwards. Net metering laws allow homeowners and businesses to be billed only for their net energy consumption as opposed to all of the energy they used.
Net metering helps because customers get full value of the electricity they use. People who use wind turbines might need to use the power company still because wind is intermittent. Over 40 states offer some type of net metering law. Residents should take advantage of these. They can get more information by going to http://www.eere.energy.gov/greenpower/resources/maps/netmetering_map.shtml or contacting the Dept. of Energy Efficiency and Renewable Energy.
As more people begin using wind turbines and the technology progresses, the cost of getting and installing wind turbines is decreasing. This is good news for anyone looking to use wind turbines. Now, there are other avenues to pursue when looking for alternative energy.
Worldwide, wind energy only accounts for 1 percent of the electricity use. However, there are countries that have taken a bigger role in using wind as a viable solution to meeting alternative energy needs. Denmark uses wind turbines for 19 percent of its electricity productions, Spain and Portugal use nine percent and Germany and Ireland use six percent.
Wind turbines also help the environment. Over the course of the wind turbine's lifetime, a residential turbine would be equivalent to planting two trees with the amount of carbon dioxide that would be saved. There are many reasons to get on the wind power bandwagon. They are all worth it. If money is the only thing holding you back, consider all the rebates and benefits you can get from owning a wind turbine. You will make your money back in a few years.

Today unlike earlier days when there were limited opportunities for jobs, there are innumerable fields one can choose from. One such field is Alternative energies. People who take up jobs in this field which is research oriented take relatively lower pay at least at the start of their careers.
People who decide to take up jobs in this will not be making lot of money at least at the beginning in spite of the fact that lot of brain work is involved in research and developing new technologies. Though making money is very important, because people who do not get paid well, may lose interest in their work sooner or later and may not be as productive as they aught to be. On the other hand there are people who give preference to job satisfaction over and above the remuneration they get and get the satisfaction of helping mankind or the society or earth herself.
In reality, what most people want is position that they can enjoy thoroughly and at the same time receive high pay for lesser time. The field of alternative energy needs wide range of different positions. People who work in this are mechanics or plant operators who would keep power plant in perfect running condition. Others are engineers and scientists who develop new techniques for further improvement. These people not only have a satisfying and interesting career, but they help making the earth a better place to live in.
The industry of alternative forms of energy is growing very fast as it is getting the backing of many governments. So naturally investors are coming forward eagerly to put in their money in to this field of alterntive energy industry because they know that it is the need of the future as well as get the backing of government support. Sky rocketing oil prices further reassure investors the importance of alternative energies.
As investors interest rises more funds are made available at the disposal of the companies to start up or expand thus leading to availabitlity of greater job opportunities.
The government is categorically promoting the idea of new job opportunities as being available in the alternative energy sector. As per the President, to make use of "home grown" renewable fuels in the United States, research needs to be done to develop ethanol from plant fibres’ biomass, which is treated as waste material.
The US government of course, is vigourously promoting the new job opportunities in the field of alternative energy sector. As said by the US President, in order to achieve a greater use of "homegrown" and renewable fuels present in the United States, research to develop advance technologies is very much needed as to be able to produce ethanol from plant fibres’ biomass, which at the moment is treated as waste material.
The President’s 2007 Federal Budget includes $150 million(a $559 million increase over the Federal Budget for 2006) to help with the developing biofuels derived totally from agricultural waste and products like wood chilps, corn stalks, and switch grass. Researchers feel that technology can be cost effective by 2012 with further research into cellulose based ethanol, thus probably displacing 30% of the nations’ current fuel consumption.

You may already be familiar with wind turbines, but did you that are actually two types: Vertical and Horizontal. They each perform differnt functions, and both have their advantages and disadvantages. To decide which one is the best for you, look at your needs. Both share the same common factor as they produce energy by using the wind, except that they do it differently. The main rotor shaft in a Vertical Axis Turbine runs vertically rather than horizontally, hence the name. There are of course advantages and disadvantages for it being in this direction. One of the best advantages is that the gearbox can be placed at the bottom of the turbine, which is not possible in a horizontal turbine, so the top of the tower does not carry all the weight.
Another advantage of Vertical Axis Wind Turbines is that it does not have to face in the wind's direction. The disadvantage is that it produces smaller amounts of energy than a horizontal turbine, and if the turbine is running in the same direction that the wind is blowing you can get pulsating torques through each turn of the turbine.
Types of Vertical Axis Wind Turbines
1. The newest type of turbine out at the moment is a windmill which has a rotation sail. When it is in operation the sails look like those you find on a ship, that expand or contract according to the change of winds. Each has three sails where the speed is controlled by a magnetic counter which expands or contracts the sails as needed. To minimise the damage to the sails there is a control unit for this purpose. The sails can tear during a large storm but the frame is very durable.
2. There are aerodynamic turbines with blades just like a plane made of airfoil base in order to capture the wind's energy. They are so designed to catch this artificial current of kinetic energy to the centre. A very effective wind turbine it runs at full capacity most of the time to utilise all the wind energy by redirecting and lifting it upwards to the turbines there. It not only responds to the wind but also free flowing water systems such as creeks, rivers, streams and oceans.
3. Darrieus Wind Turbines are known to be efficient but they are big machines for their shape and size. Because a lot of cyclic stress that is put on the tower it does tend to wear out sooner. It consists of three blades which are shaped like loops which connect to the top and bottom of the axle, and often called the "eggbeater windmill" because that is what it resembles. They are connected from the ground upwards by large external structures which hold it up.
4. The Giromill consists of three vertical blades and was based on the patent of the Darrieus design. It is very low on maintenance as it self starting. The blades of strong, light material which are more robust to cope with the stresses placed upon them. They require less blade speed to channel energy with each turn of the blades as they are very high performing.
5. Savonius Wind Turbine mills usually consist of two scoops which convert windpower into torque on a rotating shaft. There also some which are self starting and feature three scoops. They are quite similar looking to helicopter blades except they are bent in a certain style and shape to provide enough energy to be of use.
6. The blades of Windstar Turbines are straight and made of aluminium. They are attached to either end of a central rotating shaft. There are a number of rotors with their own unique dual braking system of pneumatic disc brakes and blade pitch. Windstar Turbines were designed for locations with stronger winds.
7. Vertical Axis Wind Turbines have many advantages as the running costs are low and they are easier to maintain. They can almost withstand any type of low or high wind. They are smaller which means they can be transported easier. The disadvantages are that producing efficient energy from winds takes twice as much time. The turbines have to be installed on flat land and some models require guide wires, which adds more stress to the bottom of the tower; and they have a low starting torque. A consumer has to look at a design that is suitable for them by deciding on the best one for their needs.

Experts on "green" alternative energy say that the shift from the current petroleum-powered society will not be an entirely easy one. The amount of expertise and infrastructures needed to push that shift looks mind-boggling, although Germany has already shown its capacity to generate at least 10 per cent of its total energy needs from wind turbines and solar clusters. Also there has also been a noticeable rise in the number of companies engaged in power generation that supports the alternative energy goals, moved apparently by rebate incentives and tax amnesties offered by governments involved. The expansive lag we need to close indicates how complacent we have been for a long time on the alternative energy mission. Thus it has not been entirely surprising that we find ourselves today cramming to recover opportunities offered by alternative energy sources.
Alternative energy experts further suggest that there is a need for a coordinated global effort to lessen our almost total reliance on petroleum. This traditional energy source, being largely non-renewable, is bound to become more costly to produce and therefore more expensive to consumers. It is also one of the biggest causes of environmental pollution. Moreover, continued oil exploration by its nature is an ecosystem hazard.
The consensus among experts is that there is enough stockpile for us to enjoy up to 30 years of relatively inexpensive gas and oil. They say that in 20 years after that period countries who remain dependent on that energy source by more than 10 percent of their need would be courting disaster. And yet there is little indication that countries are proceeding in that direction. On the contrary, total demand for oil has been increasing since the 1970s.
Resistance to the shift from traditional to alternative energy sources comes mostly from vested business interests. The oil industry is a huge global business empire. Alternative energy sources can threaten the profitability of this industry and its stakeholders cannot just sit and watch the source of their wealth dissipate into thin air. The logical route therefore, is to promote the profitability in the market of alternative energy sources, something which at present is wanting. Consultants advice that this needs inter-government or multi-lateral support, considering among other things the huge start-up investments and research which such a transition would entail. Moreover, they also concede that even if such international collaboration achieves its immediate objectives, we still need a long time horizon within which an alternative energy regime can be established.
It is important for the well-off countries like Japan, the US, Western Europe and others to lead the effort of minimizing global dependence on oil. Elsewhere it can be tough but poorer countries can never be expected to lift themselves from the looming oil crisis, although they may console themselves with the fact that they can generate power from coal and whatever oil reserves they have. In any event, peoples around the world will have few choices except to wean themselves from imported fuel and develop their capability to generated power from alternative sources. The switch from black oil to alternative green is inevitable, and the time to do it is now.

Having a diverse portfolio is something investors will explain is important. This way, you don't end up putting all of your money in one place and you can make money through many different avenues. One of the areas people are considering is investing in alternative energy stocks. This may sound like a risky venture, but any time you invest your money there is no guarantee you are going to get a positive return. Alternative energy is the wave of the future and with the rise of new companies, this could be a very profitable market. Don't turn your back too quickly because many investors aren't.
Analysts’ forecasts are favorable in this area. They say by 2013 it could become a $13 billion dollar industry. There are many ways to look at that. The bright side is that if you find a nice little start up company, you might have on your hands the next Microsoft. That means this tiny company became a conglomerate overnight with a beat on the market. Of course, that is always the dream and rarely happens. Realistically, these small companies could hold lots of potential, especially when a form of alternative energy is picked as the course of the future.
There are a few reasons why investing in alternative energy stocks is a route to consider. The first thing is that more and more companies are researching how to use alternative fuels. There are many on the market already such as ethanol and biodiesels. With gasoline and oil prices being so high and the United States' dependency on foreign oil, companies want to help eliminate these problems. Alternative energy is also less harmful to the environment. Companies are looking at ways to get renewable energy resources or ones that provide fewer emissions than are currently being used.
However, there is the flip side to investing in alternative energy stocks. It is such an uncertain area and there is no right way to go. You could end up looking at hundreds of different stocks wondering if geothermal is the way to go or is it ethanol companies or solar power. And, that is just three alternatives energies and not counting the other ways companies are trying to find alternative energy. If you take a chance on solar power, it may turn out that oceanic thermal energy was the way all along. There is no real answer.
Anyone considering investing in alternative energy stocks needs to consult with a financial advisor. Many have experience in this market and know more about this sector than anyone you could ever meet. They are going to show you which companies have the best upside and what alternative energy has the best chance at becoming the main power source of the future. The alternative energy market is at an important stage because it is just starting up. Many of these companies have lots of potential to offer and some aren't even worth looking at. The financial planners will be able to send you in the right direction.
You should be cautious, but most analysts agree that alternative energy stocks are a great place to look if you are considering investing money.

The older I get, the more I realize that in the cases of jobs and money, especially in today's economy, both can be very touchy subjects. Such is the case of mega-employer B.P. Aka British Petroleum. At times, one knows if one speaks ones mind, feelings might be hurt.

I grew up just north of the Mississippi Gulf Coast and N.E. Of New Orleans. It meant the world to me and still means a great deal (Though I have lived in Arkansas for 11 years, I still have many friends…and family there); and my family of origin has been there four decades.

Before reaching a definite conclusion, I had to consider the following. B.P has consistently been one of the top-ten largest oil firms in the world, along with Shell, Exxon, Conoco/Phillips et al. But bigger is not always better. Whereas ALL of BP's competitors have had ten or less safety violations per year for several decades, BP has consistently violated those rules and had 250+ violations annually, putting lives, ways of life, wildlife, and economies at risk in pursuit of big money.

This time, in a flash, they snuffed out the lives of eleven men, (and two more died later in the clean-up), ruined countless 2-3 generation family businesses, the entire ecosystem, and with oil and dispersant everywhere, it is not if, it is WHEN a hurricane comes, will we will all see the scope of the damage done. Those tar-balls won't be sitting on the beach any longer. The oil will not be floating around only in the ocean. It will be in our schools, businesses, and homes, on our land-raised food, etc. 1.5 million gallons of dispersant has been used. For whatever reason, BP chose one of the most toxic kinds. There are some that are harmless to the environment. They chose not to use those. The dispersant used stays on the ocean floor forever and is a chemical toxin, many say much worse than the oil!

Anyone who has lived on or near the coast knows, a hurricane or major tropical storm WILL happen. It will be interesting to hear the feelings of those who are sure BP is our economic saving grace when the oil starts heading into the inland.

You may remember awhile back, under Florida's Republican Governor Jeb Bush, a very tough decision was made. Did Florida want offshore drilling or pristine beaches, fishing, wildlife, and a booming tourism economy, offshore drilling, or both? It wisely decided on the former.

There remains no Florida offshore drilling, though they are seeing the results of what can happen when an out-of-control corporation such as BP.

As I write this, there is a tropical storm forming in the Caribbean moving towards the Gulf.Again, we know this can turn easily into a hurricane, and, even if it stays a tropical storm, itwill bring much of what is in and on the ocean onto land, sometimes way beyond the Coast itself.

Did it ever occur to anyone that even if deep-water drilling returns, and BP is banned, thatany of the other top six, with near-pristine safety records, could easily take over and do it right after the clean up (though I would prefer to see no deep water drilling at all until all the snags are worked out).

We saw a BP spokesman on the news yesterday use the tired old analogy, "When an airplane crashes, they don't outlaw flying". Well that's a tired old analogy for a reason. It's not exactly true. When airlines such as Eastern and several others had such consistently poor safety records and crashes that it finally did not have the money to safely fix, as large as the firm was, it

eventually folded or would have been violating more and more. They, unlike BP, knew the right thing to do before more destruction and deaths happened.

Did the airline industry suffer from that. It did just the opposite. It learned from Eastern and others errors and, though it has never been that profitable except for a few airlines, improved its safety record dramatically.

My wife Lee brought up another really interesting issue. If deep water drilling (which is only10% of ocean drilling) SOOO important for Louisiana, why is it that there is so much poverty there? In Alaska for instance, every citizen is given a stipend for giving the opportunity of oil companies to drill. Surely much of Louisiana does not live in poverty, but given "just how important oil is for it to flourish", the track record is pretty bad. I see MANY more people in Louisiana getting benefits from technology, banking, arts, etc than oil.

I see a few oil fat cats taking in the cash from deep water drilling. Keep in mind only 30 or soof the 300 offshore La wells are deep-water.

The topic of offshore drilling came up again (in Florida), (not just deep-water but ALL offshore drilling) under another Republican Florida Governor Charlie Crist. He also, saw no benefits to the state and the state remains a flourishing tourism and wildlife reserve.

I guess if I still lived and worked near the coast, it would be too easy to buy into BP's nonstop "Good-guy" PR campaign. It is nonstop and it seems to be effective.I know how easy it is to "overlook a problem or issue if it is nearby". It is human nature to "go into denial". But if one "who has been there", but now can see it from a distance, a new perspective, the whole issue becomes more clear.

One can see through the BP ad campaign's thin-veneer. It is smoke and mirrors and very expensive. All those millions of TV dollars could and should go to small business owners, wildlife refugees, out of work oil workers, etc., but no.

It is going to put on a happy face. Sorry BP. We have more than a junior high education; mos tof us, and we don't buy it. Any of it. Thank you for trying. Please stop while you are way behind, and let another oil company do the job.

I used to (try) to work in the entertainment industry. I had a few successes but many more failures than successes. Though it was an ego-blow to pack up my bags and leave NYC (and L.A.), I did so. Now I write songs, cartoons, articles, etc., am married, and very happy. When I left the exciting field of "showbiz", I had no idea what would happen next, but as it turned out, it was better for me and everyone involved. Can't you do the same, BP with our oceans? You've had successes, but LOOK AT THIS FAILURE!!!!!

As far as us, victims of BP, this may be a real wake-up call. The alternative energy is out there. It is not expensive, and it is easy to convert. For years I have talked about "we should…" and"wouldn't it be nice if…?" In other words I could talk the talk very well. Perhaps it is also time for ME to look within and walk the walk; by actually using such alternative fuels. I can't change BP.

I can write articles and songs that hopefully raise awareness. I can change me, and that means taking this issue seriously, very seriously, as I can see the horrendous damage this has done.
