If you have looked at your energy bill with a sinking feeling, you might think it is time to start looking into alternative energy for home. In the not so distant past, the desire to use alternative energy forms might have been restricted to those best described as hippies by the mainstream media and the majority of people. But, as the prices for certain types of energy as well as the tons and tons of information about the dangers of this energy continue to increase, more and more people are willing to at least consider the alternatives.

The most common of the alternative fuels is solar energy. There are a vast number of people who harness the power of the sun, if only for very small uses in and around their home. Look at the little walkway lights that people have in front of their house. The bulk of those are solar powered. Many people use solar blankets on their swimming pool, capturing the heat of the sun to warm their pool's water to a more comfortable temperature without having to use any additional power source. Some people go a step further, using the power of the sun to run their entire household. The basic premise is simple: the sun's power is captured by specialized solar panels and the energy is stored for later use, such as when the sun goes down or when it is a cloudy day.

Wind energy is gaining popularity as more people learn about it. There are drawbacks to it, of course, but it is a viable alternative energy resource to be considered just the same. Wind power tends to be most active at night, which means that it can be used effectively in tandem with solar energy. But, even at night, you can't always predict or count on the wind blowing and the turbines that are used in wind energy can be very loud. Birds are often killed by the turbines, which can cause some problems as well.

There are other alternative energy sources as well, including those that have been in use for centuries. Water can be used to power machinery or other items that need power, but there has to be a nearby water source and the problem can be noise and other issues. Almost every energy resource has some drawback or negative, so it is often a matter of trading off from one to another, when you are looking to minimize the costs and the impact to the environment. Making sure you learn about alternative energy for home is the first step to taking control and gaining power over the power that you use.

Solar energy is one of the renewable energy resources that are advancing as a way to get energy in the future. Of all of the renewable energies, solar is the one that is used the most. It's clean, efficient and readily available. There are two ways solar power can be converted to be used in the mainstream. The first way is what you see on your tiny calculator. This is called the photovoltaic effect when light energy is converted into electricity. The other way to use solar energy is by heating a transfer fluid (many times oil) and combining it with water to create steam, which moves a generator.

These are both great resources and are being explored more and more everyday. However, not enough is being done because countries still rely on power plants, foreign oil and nuclear plants to get electricity. In the United States, there are more homes everyday that are converting solar power. In the western states where it's sunny and warm year-round, a large number of houses have already converted. By doing this they are saving money on electricity and helping save the environment.

Solar energy needs to be explored and used further. It has a great number of benefits.

1. Solar power is clean. When using solar power, the only waste is steam from water and oil combining. This doesn't create any greenhouse gasses and will help the global climate crisis lessen and maybe come to an end.
2. Solar power is readily available. Every morning when the sun comes up, solar power is ready to start working again. It can produce enough energy during the day that it can be used at night. However, there many commercial companies that use a hybrid for electricity. During the day, solar power is being used to heat the building or run the machines. At night, they convert back to regular electricity. Even though it's not going all the way, it's still a huge step in the right direction.
3. Solar has a wide range of uses. Solar power can be used for more than just electricity. There are simpler uses for solar energy that can help reduce the dependency on foreign oil. Solar energy can be used for cooking, all types of heating and lighting.

In developing countries, solar power has enormous potential and upside. In these countries, solar power helps reduce risk of injuries by reducing the use of kerosene lamps. This limits accidental fires and fumes being inhaled. It helps extend workdays. It improves literacy and gives people a chance to go to school in developing countries. This isn't a technology just for the best and most energy-starved countries. Solar power is beneficial to everyone.

Solar power is very reliable, even on cloudy days. The heat of the sun won't have as big as an effect, but will still do its job. The process is so good that solar panels are on the space shuttles. If NASA engineers didn't think it was reliable, there is no way solar panels would be used for such sensitive missions.

If you have ever spent much time with kids, you know that life is one big question and answer session. With all the topics they are always bringing up, there is no better one to introduce than the topic of our world and how to improve it. A parent could take questions about the sun and turn them into answers about solar energy.

Helping your kids understand alternative energy is very valuable.

Alternative energy is energy that does not use oil. Using natural sources such as the sun, air, water, the heat of the earth and waste products, energy can be created that is safer and less pollutive and renewable.

If children already know what the elements that form the basis of alternative energy are, you can take this information and show them how these things are used to make energy. How do we do this?

Some suggestions are:

When you talk about the sun, you can discuss how power can be derived from the sun using solar panels, that the heat from the sun is stored in panels and then converted to electricity to be used in our homes.

Besides instilling the concept of water safely in children, you can use any discussion about water to explain how it is used to create energy. Children can understand tides, waves and dams; you can explain how each of these can be used to create electricity. If you want to go further, you can discuss how water passes over turbines to create power, how generators store this energy, and how electricity is created. Once they understand this, you can show them how this concept works with tides and waves as well.

When you are explaining to your children how important air is for breathing, you can also explain how it can be converted to power via wind turbines to create safe, clean energy.

Children need to understand the danger of steam so that they do not burn themselves, but you can use this opportunity to explain that steam moves turbines and charges generators that can light our streets and power our appliances.

If you keep the concepts simple, even little children can understand. You can illustrate with items found around your home, show them pictures and even perhaps bring them to a power plant that uses alternative energy. The idea is to get them interested, aware and appreciative of these sources of energy.

It is possible to have a portfolio which profitably (that's the key word, is it not?) invests in alternative energy funds. "Green" energy production is expected to be a multi-billion (in today's dollars) industry by 2013.

The most recently developed wind-turbine technologies have brought us wind-produced energy which is more cost efficient as well as more widespread. More state-of-the-art wind energy technologies are typically more market competitive with conventional energy technologies. The newer wind-power technologies don't even kill birds like in days of old! Wind energy production is a growing technology, and companies engaged in it would make up an excellent part of a growth or aggressive growth portfolio.

Next to consider are solar cell, or photovoltaic cell, technologies. These are to be found implemented in pocket calculators, private property lights, US Coast Guard buoys, and other areas. More and more they find their way onto the roofs of housing and commercial buildings and building complexes. Cost is falling. Their energy efficiency (the ratio of the amount of work needed to cause their energy production versus the actual energy production) is steadily on the rise. As an example, the conversion efficiency of silicon cells has increased from a mere four percent in 1982 to over 20% for the latest technologies. Photovoltaic cells create absolute zero pollution as they are generating electrical power. However, photovoltaic cellls are not presently as cost effective as "utility produced" electricity. "PV" cells are not [capable at present for producing industrial-production amounts of electricity due to their present constraints on space. However, areas where photovoltaic cell arrays could be implemented are increasingly available. In sum, costs are going down while efficiency is rising for this alternative fuel technology.

Many alternative energy investment portfolio advisors are confident that alternative energies derived from currents, tidal movement, and temperature differentials are poised to become a new and predominant form of clean energy. The French are actually fairly advanced at hydro power generation, and numerous studies are being made in Scotland and the US along these sames lines. Some concerns center around the problems with the deterioration of metals in salt water, marine growth such as barnacles, and violent storms which have all been disruptions to energy production in the past. However, these problems for the most part seem to be cured through the use of different, better materials. Ocean-produced energy has a huge advantage because the timing of ocean currents and waves are well understood and reliable.

Investments in hydro-electric technology have grown in the last two decades. Hydro-electric power is clean; however, it's also limited by geography. While already prominent as power generation, the large, older dams have had problems with disturbing marine life. Improvements have been made on those dams in order to protect marine life, but these improvements have been expensive. Consequently, more attention is now being paid to low-impact "run-of-the-river" hydro-power plants, which do not have these ecological problems.

The reality is, the energy future is green, and investors would do well to put their money out wisely, with that advice in their minds.

Among the most important scientific breakthroughs today is the use of non-conventional or alternative fuels. The price of conventional fuels has been soaring fast and is showing no signs of slowing down. If you also want not just to save money on fuel but also save the environment, you should learn how to make alternative energy at home. Below are some important information you can use so that you too can enjoy the benefits of this new innovation.

Click Here For Young Innovators Instant Access Now!

There are a lot of ways to tap on alternative energy sources. But one great example of how to make alternative energy is by building your own hybrid. Just imagine having your car running on just water alone. This process works by extracting the compressed hydrogen in the water and used as a fuel that burns cleanly. With the combination of a vacuum hose and electricity from the engine, the device gradually separates the hydrogen in the water and turns it into what is called Brown?s gas. There is a hardware in the device that sends information to your car?s computer to burn less fuel and more hydrogen. This in turn maximizes fuel efficiency by burning up to 70% more hydrogen and just 30% fuel. You can even get to run your car for months with just a gallon of water.

You need not to worry about the cost of conversion or your technical skill to make one. Materials to be used are available at local hardware stores and DYI shops. After you purchase these materials you can easily assemble them and connect it to your cars engine. This conversion works on both gasoline and diesel fuelled cars and other motorized vehicles.

There are a lot of other ways to harness the power of nature and make it an alternative power source. Conversion of water into fuel gained more popularity however because it drastically reduces the amount of pollution in the air caused by burning fossil fuels.

What would be much greater than to be able not only save money but also save Mother Nature? Learning how to make alternative energy is what our world needs. Start now and do the environment and yourself a big favor.

Solar School – American Solar Energy - The Education of the Future

Solar school classes are being offered in the growing solar technology field. As the increase for alternative fuel sources is being pushed through government programs, solar school curriculum prepare students to become certified in different areas of the field. The North American Board of Certified Energy Practitioners (NABCEP) is the certification body, which offers exams in becoming Photovoltaic System Installer or Entry Level Knowledge certified.

Solar school offers Associate of Applied Science Renewable Energy Specialization programs along with Solar Thermal Power and Solar Photovoltaic courses. Some solar school classes may reside within other areas of universities, colleges and trade schools. Undergraduate courses are offered in solar energy systems and design, while some solar energy programs may reside in Mechanical engineering courses. Whatever the area of solar technology, with it is anticipated that there will not be enough trained and certified personnel to fill job opportunities.

While the economy has taken many job markets and wrecked havoc, the solar technology and emerging “green” collar jobs and alternative energy training is growing faster than the economy. It is expected that between 16 and 37 million workers will be in the alternative fuel jobs within the next two decades. This is part of the government’s programs in public schools where solar energy is already being taught to school age children. Unfortunately, the adult population is fairly unknowledgeable of this growing field.

Solar school funding includes scholarships, some of them 100%, yet this money has not been fully tapped and solar school classes are not completely full. Solar technology is expected to have 5 million jobs by 2012, but many of them will go unfilled unless more students change their focus to this growing occupational field. Whether it is architect, engineering, installing or system research and design, there is expected to be an insufficient number of alternative energy training programs as well as trained and certified personnel.

Existing building and construction companies have started to send personnel to solar school in an effort to stay ahead of the game and gain the “green” building initiatives that are being undertaken across the United States and overseas. The governments do not want to wait for the next oil crisis to start initiatives in finding alternatives for energy.

Those that direct their efforts towards american solar energy and getting the education, knowledge, certifications and hands-on experience in the beginning efforts will be the most rewarded later on. By getting in solar school and staying with the ever-developing technology, job applicants will be highly sought after and highly indispensable. “Green” collar jobs are expected to replace many of the lost “blue” collar jobs, and government budgeting is very aggressive towards this reality.

There are many sources to find more information regarding alternative energy training, solar school classes, and many communities are offering smaller workshops to offer natural building tips using renewable and sustainable energy sources. Existing construction is finding more clients demanding solar systems as tax credits, utility rebates and energy cost savings make them too good to pass up. Those that are trained and certified in designing, engineering, installing and wiring them will have the upper advantage on these types of jobs. Whether you are an existing electrician, engineer or installer, it is to your advantage to go to solar school to get the knowledge and certifications that are available.

Despite opportunities in environmental jobs increasing, the economic slowdown has translated into increasing economic worries for a large portion of America’s workforce. A good thing that is forecasted to come out of this economic disaster is a surge of green jobs that should put more people back to work than originally were laid off. This is one ofthe many reasons
Green Degree Courses are one of the most sought after tracks in North America.

The threat of global warming has become apparent. We see it on the news, we read about it in newspapers and it is always featured on websites. We also feel and experience the effects of global warming. In some countries, winters have become either longer or shorter. Blizzards and hurricanes are becoming more frequent and more violent. Flash floods are becoming a common occurrence and other strange weather phenomenon is taking place even as we speak.

Making your own solar and wind power for less than $200

This is all man's fault of course. We have abused nature and are now paying the ultimate price. But sad to say, even other creatures have to suffer because of our mistakes. Animals are also feeling nature's wrath as she in turn has began to take what is due her. Polar bears are drowning as sea ice becomes smaller. They are now swimming greater distances to reach the next patch of ice and the distance grows everyday. Frogs found in suburban homes in the United States are have mutated to become hermaphrodites as rivers and streams have become dumping grounds of our waste making them polluted.

Yes, global warming is upon us. It is evident in our everyday lives. We use sunscreen to block the sun's harmful rays because our Ozone layer has become thin. We have to suffer through violent storms and crazy weather because our climate is changing. And life as we know it is indeed changing slowly. Yes, we are paying for the price of destroying our natural environment. Yes, we have been neglectful and abusive towards Mother Nature by cutting down her trees and polluting her air with our cars. But this does not mean that we simply stop and give up the fight.

Because it is our fault that global warming has become a threat to mankind, it is also our duty and responsibility to look for ways to curb and slow down the effects of global warming on our planet. One such way is to find an alternative source of fuel that is not only clean but is also renewable.

Making your own solar and wind power for less than $200

There are groups of people, individuals and even companies who do research on alternative fuel sources. Global warming is reversible and they are looking for ways to do this effectively. Everybody has seen solar powered calculators, watches and even cars. There are solar powered homes and actors like Leonardo di Caprio even lives in a condominium building where all units are powered by photovoltaic cells which harness solar power.

Research and studies for solar energy give all of us hope. These will someday change the way people perceive fuel for their cars, homes and offices. High energy solar powered systems for governments and countries around the world is what our world needs in order to solve the energy crisis. Research for solar energy is still somewhat new but steps are being taken for solar energy to power homes, streets, city blocks and maybe in the future whole cities and countries.

A long time ago, a man named Galileo was threatened by the Catholic Church of excommunication when he proposed that it was the sun and not the earth that was the center of the solar system. Maybe today, Galileo is smiling and saying "I told you so" as companies looking for ways to turn solar energy to help solve and alleviate not only the energy crisis but threat of global warming as well.

There is a growing trend in today's world towards using cleaner, greener, and most importantly, renewable resources. It is no longer a question of if we run out of oil, only when. And people are already feeling the pinch every time they gas up at the pump or get the latest gas bill.

The result of this trend has been more and more home owners looking into alternative energy sources to run their household on. This is both a necessary step in our evolution as a society and a sound economic choice for home owners today. What are some of the methods that can be used to power a home today? Let's take a look at a few of the more common choices.

1. Solar Power

Everything on the planet runs on the energy provided by our sun. The oil your car runs on is nothing more than stored solar energy, when you get right down to it. So the move to solar power just makes sense. Solar power can be used in a few different ways. It is possible to run a home directly off of your solar panels, and rely on the power company to provide electricity when the sun is down or on cloudy days. When your solar panels are operating, you feed any energy you are not using at the moment back through your meter into the power grid. This has the effect of actually making your meter run backwards during the day. Hopefully, either you will produce more during the day than you use at night, or at least break even. The second and most common method of using solar power is to simply have your solar panels charge a large bank of batteries that your house then draws power from. Again, any excess energy produced can be fed back and sold to the power company, with electricity from the grid making up any shortfalls. The third way of utilizing solar power is somewhat more complex, and is probably not currently applicable to the average home owner. Using solar power to break down water into hydrogen and oxygen, you can store solar energy in much the same way as oil does, and release it later by combustion or fuel cells. This is really only feasible right for the power companies, but has the advantage of storing up excess solar energy in a form that can be used on cloudy days, ensuring an uninterrupted flow of power.

2. Wind Power

This alternative energy source is best used in conjunction with the solar power methods described above. In stormy weather, for instance, the sun may be hidden, but the wind may be blowing hard, and vice-versa for sunny days. This can help smooth out the available alternative energy levels available, and lead to more power being sold to the power company.

3. Hydroelectric Power

Most people would probably not think of hydroelectric power as a viable source of alternative energy for their home, but if you have access to a source of running water like a creek, you can generate a surprisingly large amount of power with only a small dam. When used either in conjunction with solar and wind, or on its own, hydroelectric power can easily completely replace the power company as the source of power in a home.

The term "Alternative energy" basically applies to any source of power able to replace fossil fuel without its emission effect. However, not all sources of energy defined as alternative are hazard free, for example the nuclear kind. Therefore, in order to be on the safe side, here is a list of alternative energy resources that are mostly natural, safe and fulfill the zero emission agenda.

Geothermal energy

Energy derived from heat sources inside the planet. Geothermal energy "hotspots" can be found near geologically active regions or close to volcanoes. When water passes near these points it is heated, enabling us to use the heat to produce power.

Solar energy

Photovoltaic cells (like those used in solar water heaters) allow us to harness sunlight in order to produce electricity. The problem with this particular type of alternative energy, is the relatively low conversion rate of light to electricity (a notion called "efficiency"). In order to produce a large amount of electricity one must use a very large solar panel to absorb the sunlight. Luckily, today there are many companies busy researching and developing photovoltaic cells with high efficiency and lower costs.

Wind Energy

Wind Energy refers to strong wind gusts able to set in motion huge weather vanes thus producing voltage. In Israel, an example of a wind farm of this sort can be found in the Golan Heights. Today throughout the world, many wind farms are being established especially in the European Union countries, thanks to a large amount of government incentives encouraging clean energy.

Wind power is clean and relatively simple to produce. All it needs is an area with a steady regime of strong winds, where one can take advantage of these winds in order to produce energy.

Hydro Electric-Energy

Water currents can also be turned into energy. throughout history , mankind used river currents to generate energy. one such power station is situated in Israel on the Jordan River near Kfar Hanasi. Another innovation in the field is the production of energy from tidal waves. This technology, however, is still young and will require more research time before we are able to use it for the commercial production of energy.

Bio-fuels

In recent years, we have witnessed the production of Ethanol, which is a type of alcohol used for fire and the production of energy. Ethanol can be produced from plants such as sugar canes or corn crops. Today many of the cars driven in Brazil are powered by bio-fuels. A large growing part of corn crops in the world is used for production of oil, causing a shortage in corn and a rise in its prices. Production of bio-fuels requires large amounts of corn and is therefore economically viable only in countries where there are vast areas with an abundance of water (like the U.S. or Brazil).

Turning waste into Diesel

In the race to find a clean, renewable energy source that can replace the endless demand for fossil fuel, a new player has risen called Global Energy. In a world with an endless supply of waste, it's only natural to dream about turning our global waste into global energy.

Global Energy KDV technology does exactly that; turning even sludge, containing large quantities of hydrocarbons and unused plant biomass, created in the process of making bio-fuels, into diesel. KDV technology uses a catalyst developed by Dr. Koch, which converts the hydrocarbon chains found in waste, into shorter chains of synthetic diesel, using a turbine. Processing paper, tar, animal manure, plastic and many more types of MSW, any country can adopt the process and use it in its own backyard.

Young people need to be educated about the production of alternative energy and the most successful way as witnessed by the writer is by using the PicoTurbine Company's books, projects and kits. PicoTurbine has produced these things to purposely educate young people about the environment which they will inherit by looking at the advances in alternative or renewable energy, the seeds of their future. "Things are more like they are now than they have ever been before", said the late, great Mr. Gerry Ford. "If we are to change the future world for the better, then it starts right here and now with the advent of the "green" energy systems.

There is a an old adage which states: "Tell me, and I will forget. Show me, and I might remember some of it. Involve me, and I will master it", which has been tried and tested. It has become a core concept of PicoTurbine in producing kits which encourage young people to learn hands-on by the activities that are suggested so they can see for themselves. One such suggestion by the company is the demonstration of how wind energy can produce heat (a specialty of the company), which uses a "picture wire" as the heating element. People naturally would think that wind energy would produce some king of "cold" energy as discovered by PicoTurbine, so it comes as a pleasant surprise to learn how in fact the use of wind in our homes can generate heat. The company also offers another suggestion that in a classroom, different groups are made up, so that can build their own wind turbines and then the results compared respectively. This is exciting for young children especially, as they are then able to see which one can produce the most electricity in comparison to the one with the least; the ones that require the least quantity of wind power; and most aesthetically appealing wind turbine of all of them.

PicoTurbine have a core curriculum for teachers to follow to instil in their pupils minds. Included in these renewable and alternative energy sources are biomass, geothermal, hydroelectric and solar energy as well as wind-produced energy. By using these alternative energy sources, we decrease the nation's dependence for using foreign oil supplies, that have to bought from nations which are not known "allies", also making it more expensive for our country. It is seen to be cost effective and is becoming more so to use alternative energy, in comparison to the use of fossil fuels which we currently are reliant upon.

As pointed out by PicoTurbine it is already a commercial sucess for those in the production of wind farms and also solar energy plants. During the last twenty years, photovaltaic cells have gone from costing almost $1000 down to only $4 per watt. Predictions show that by the year 2015, analysts have the cost per watt down to only $1 (by today's prices). The hidden costs of fossil fuels should be taught to students, and what can lead to environmental pollution and degradation. There are lots of health risks as the burning of fossil fuels causes a lot of air pollution increasing the cases of asthma, the increase and heightened allergies, and how they cause cancer. The importance of switching to cleaner, green energy is paramount and it should be stressed that by more use we would prevent more air pollution that would improve the environment for all.

There is an increasing demand for energy across the globe, of which there are natural resources waiting for us to harness if for our use. We need to spend more time and money into research and seeking ways to make good use of this alternative energy, rather than using the old fossil fuels and creating more damage to the environment.

Wind power is an alternative energy resource that we harness with wind turbines. They are continually being developed with demand and are progressively becoming cheaper and more efficient in energy. There are many "wind farms" which can be seen, that are strategically placed so as not to jeopardise the bird population in their natural environment. The first wind turbines were not so well placed.

The most famous of all alternative energy resources is solar energy, which the majority of people are familiar with. There are lots of products on the market which use solar power, that people buy for home use: solar lighting, solar lanterns and fountains for the garden are a new innovation, etc. Solar cells are manufactured which collects the sun's energy and focuses, so that it can be converted into electricity to light buildings and for heating, like hot water. Solar energy is like wind power in that there is zero pollution created, which is a positive for the environment.

Governments and investors see Ocean Wave Energy as having great potential for generating energy. In France, a generator of this kind has been operation for several years, deemed to be a great success. In Ireland and Scotland there are now facilities up and running in their experimental phase.

Hydroelectric power plants have been around for years and the powerful generators that have been set up, have proven to be much cleaner and better than power grids at producing electricity. There are, however, limitations as to where you can place one as you have to build a huge dam in a suitable location for the water. For this reason, there are new much smaller localised hydroelectric generators that have been set up recently in rivers, so that they can be localised to accommodate them.

Geothermal energy lies just under our feet directly and there is an abundance of it available. A few miles just below the surface of the earth, we can tap into this energy. The hot molten core of the earth heats the water on the surface, to produce energy, which is harnessed once it turns into steam. This steam is used to drive turbine engines so as to generate electricity. More research should be done on geothermal energy so we can tap into its resources and develop it more for use.

The waste that we produced is often disposed in landfill sites, which decomposes over time and so gives off methane. By using it before it gives off too methane which is damaging, we can create energy from it. It is mainly used as gas for fuel cells for use in standard gasoline generators.

Ethanol is a biofuel used as a substitute for gasoline. This alternative fuel is easy to make and process using such products as corn, grapes, sugar cane, wheat, wood cellulose and wood chips. It is still debatable as to whether it is economical as lots of arable land is required to grow the crops, and also concerns of the pollutants from use of this product. It is localised in some areas and technologies are still being refined for extraction and admixturing.

There is a lot of investment by entrepreneurs into Biodiesel energy which is created by many different plant oils such as palms, rapeseed, soybeans and sunflower oils. It is now competing with fossil fuels and many companies have shown a commercial interest as it is cleaner burning than oil based diesel and is environmentally friendly.

Atomic energy is being created by regenerating nuclear plants for a carbon free energy source with nuclear fission. A great amount of power can be generated which makes this type of energy very efficient. The concern from people is of the radioactive waste product of atomic energy, although there is very little it still takes hundreds of years to decay before it becomes harmless.

Investments in Alternative Energy

It is possible to have a portfolio which profitably (that’s the key word, is it not?) invests in alternative energy funds. “Green” energy production is expected to be a multi-billion (in today’s dollars) industry by 2013.

The most recently developed wind-turbine technologies have brought us wind-produced energy which is more cost efficient as well as more widespread. More state-of-the-art wind energy technologies are typically more market competitive with conventional energy technologies. The newer wind-power technologies don’t even kill birds like in days of old!

However, photovoltaic cellls are not presently as cost effective as “utility produced” electricity. “PV” cells are not [capable at present for producing industrial-production amounts of electricity due to their present constraints on space.

Hydro-electric power is clean; however, it’s also limited by geography. While already prominent as power generation, the large, older dams have had problems with disturbing marine life. Improvements have been made on those dams in order to protect marine life, but these improvements have been expensive. Consequently, more attention is now being paid to low-impact “run-of-the-river” hydro-power plants, which do not have these ecological problems.

The reality is, the energy future is green, and investors would do well to put their money out wisely, with that advice in their minds.

With the popularity of clean energy, carbon reduction and Earth friendliness, it would seem that investments in alternative energy funds would be virtually risk free. But just like any emerging industry, there is no guarantee that all sectors of the market will succeed. Just like the tech bubble that began forming in the early and mid 90s, the alternative energy market will likely soon divide the winners from the losers. If you are lucky or smart enough to pick a winner, you'll soon be rolling in green. On the other hand, losses can be significant for those who chose the idea that wasn't embraced by the market.

Another important factor when it comes to energy is government regulation. Other sectors are relatively free of government interference as long as they obey the basic laws. Energy, on the other hand, is seen as something with national security implications and is treated differently. Since there's no way to know how the government will react one way or the other, this adds a good deal of risk to any alternative energy investment.

It's certainly not difficult to find an alternative energy fund to invest in. These days the market abounds with them. Whether it's solar, wind or battery powered vehicles, there's a fund to meet any investor's outlook. The biggest risk, regardless of which one you choose, is volatility. Energy still revolves around oil, coal and natural gas. When these industries are demanding high prices on the commodities markets, alternative fuels soar in value. However, once the price returns to more common levels, sustainable energy still takes a back seat to fossil fuels.

Like any energy investment, alternative energy sources can be greatly affected by regional insecurity. Certain areas do better when it comes to green fuels just as some areas have more fossil fuels. Solar doesn't do well in Ireland and geothermal is restricted to areas with significant seismic activity like southern California. If you invest in an industry that is focused on an unstable nation, there is no guarantee of anything.

Alternative fuels currently enjoy relatively low tax burdens. But don't count on this always being the case. As they grow in popularity, governments will increasingly see the opportunity to reap tax revenues, like they currently do with gasoline. This can have a tremendous affect on the market.

One downside of sustainable energy that is rarely discussed is the possibility of having too much. For the world, an ample supply is great, but for an investor it can mean the bottom dropping out of an oversupplied market. Energy, as the oil companies will tell you, is an industry extremely dependent on supply and demand. If the market is flooded with too much energy, the price people are willing to pay drops rapidly. The more popular the investments become, the greater the danger that the investments will lose their demand.

Business hunches are catching on the unfolding attraction of profits offered by alternative energy investments. Their clue comes from highly informed analysis showing that "green” energy production is all systems go to become a multi-billion business by 2013.

The alternative energy frontier has recently expanded its vast horizons. The newly crafted wind turbine technologies, for example, have given us fresh glimpses of how cost-effective wind-powered energy can become. They are gaining support due largely to their superior long-term viability in comparison with what traditional energy technologies offer. With initial successes, industry players are expected to jump on the bandwagon, further fueling possibilities of increased investments in wind technology research and production.

Another example is photovoltaic or solar cell alternative energy technology. This technology has long been in use to energize pocket calculators, personal asset lights, US Coast Guard buoys and other related implements. Now its uses have been increasing, like gracing housing roofs, commercial and other industrial complexes. While the cost of the technology continues to drop, its efficiency ratio continues to rise. The efficiency ratio of energy conversion using silicon cells has risen from only 4 per cent in 1982 to more than 20 per cent in recent years with application of the latest technologies. Moreover, photovoltaic cells do not emit pollutants because they merely produce electrical power. The downside of PV cells is that they are currently not as cost-efficient when compared to the commercial electric-generating facilities. Their production capability at a scale remains constrained due to their space requirements. But with increasing availability of areas where PV cells can be placed in adequate number, the PV technology has become an attractive business proposition.

Alternative energy investment experts also believe that alternative sources of energy from tidal currents or movements as well as temperature differentials offer new and huge business potentials. France continues to lead in developing hydro power technology research and production. The United States and Scotland, among other countries, are also deep in their own researches on hydro power generation. There had been initial difficulties in this field, owing in part to the decline of salt water metals, proliferation of barnacles and turbulent storms, among other things, which impeded stable energy generation. But current breakthroughs have addressed these concerns such as by using alternative and better industrial materials. It also helps that people are having a better understanding on ocean currents and ocean waves. Many things are working for ocean-powered energy, not the least of which being its reliability and renewability.

Elsewhere, investments in hydro-electric technology have increased in the last 20 years. Hydro-electric power is environmentally clean. The problem with dams that make use of water and gravity to run turbines and generate electricity is their limited availability. Not many dams can be viably constructed in relation to total demand for energy. The giant dams have also been blamed for despoiling the marine eco-system. Efforts to address these concerns require big and sometimes prohibitive expenses such that focus has turned to low-impact “run-of-the-river” hydro-power-generating facilities. While they remain potent as sources of electric power, these relatively smaller facilities are not ecological hazards.

Green energy is the way to go. Alternative sources of energy are environmentally safe even as they respond to our growing need for power. This sunrise industry beckons. We would be well-advised to go with the current and invest in it.

Solar energy is power generated from the heat of the sun. The sun illuminates and provides heat and warmth on the surface of the earth. Technologies that capture and store solar heat for an extended period of time can be applied to benefit homes, offices, and factories. They can transform solar energy to run devices that provides warmth and lighting during nightime or during cloudy days.

You can make use of solar energy yourself by learning how. Solar energy as a resource is free. However, the cost of materials and equipment you need to tap that resource ranges from high to low, depending on what suits your needs. The good thing about it is that, unlike oil or gas heaters for which you pay every month, you spend less and less for energizing and heating your home with solar energy. Without ill effects on the environment, solar power can cool, heat and ventilate your home.

If you are thinking about having your own solar power for any particular use, it would be easier if you try to find a solar collector first. A solar collector is any material such as clear plastic or glass that can attract and capture the energy brought on by the heat of the sun in concentrated quantities. An example of a trapped or captured heat is when a car that has sat out in the warm sun all day has become exceedingly hot so that you need to open your windows in order to let the warm air escape from your seats and compartments and allowing the car to cool inside. A greenhouse is another example. It has the same effect as its glass or clear plastic walls and roof can attract the heat of the sun and trap it inside to keep the needed amount of heat for the plants to grow normally and efficiently.

Also, tapping solar energy for home use can offer you optimum benefits if you familiarize yourself about what an active and a passive home means. These are two types of solar homes which give homeowners choices on which part of the homes they want energized or what equipment they want run by solar power. Solar energy can be used to warm your home, heat your water, as well as generate electricity for lighting at night. Consequently, you will need to consider the cost which a particular type of solar home entails when you choose the type of solar home you want.

Passive homes do away with special facilities or materials for heating. They merely use their windows for maximized entry of sunlight. The sunlight gets stored by having the doors totally closed during the warmest hours of the day and keeping the heat trapped inside. In the evenings, thick curtains can be used on the windows to keep this heat concentrated inside the home. This allows the natural heat of the sun to warm your home without using any special or elaborate equipment and materials.

Active homes, on the other hand, use equipment such as blowers and pumps. Substitute heating sources also need to be used when the sunlight captured during daytime is not enough for the heat to circulate inside the house. Active homes use specially-designed boxes placed outside to attract sunlight and store the heat, thereby providing more supply of energy to heat the homes. These boxes heat water or air inside pipes and ductwork which in turn facilitate the circulation of heat inside the homes.

In the long term, solar energy is cost-effective. It can heat our homes without spending for artificially-generated heat. Solar energy does not harm the environment and can be found anytime and wherever the sun shines.
