Getting Started

Before you start building a DIY wind turbine, there are a couple of requirements that you should ensure you meet. One of the biggest requirements you need to make sure to meet is making sure the location you plan on installing the turbine is big enough. Ideally, this location should be at least an acre in size so that the blades are able to capture enough wind energy to power the turbine. If the area is not big enough, then you may not get enough wind for it to work properly. The other requirement is that the average wind speed in your desired location needs to be at least 11 miles per hour. Make sure that the wind speed is consistent. If the wind is only strong enough for a few hours of the day, it's not going to be very helpful. You should also avoid places that have tall towers or high-rise buildings, as they will block a lot of the wind from reaching your turbine.

What Materials Are Required?

Now that you've ensured the location you want to place your DIY wind turbine is suitable, it's time to figure out what materials are needed to build it. Turbines are relatively simple machines and are made up of a few parts. They are the blades, tower, shaft, base, and of course the generator.

The blades are responsible for actually capturing the wind energy and allow the wind turbine to spin. They are usually made of plastic or wood and there can be as few as four on simple turbines to 20 on more advanced ones.
The tower is the tall pillar that holds up the turbine high enough so that it can take advantage of the wind energy.
The shaft is what you attach the blades to and is then joined to the tower so that it can spin smoothly in the wind.
The base holds the tower and the shaft down, keeping them from getting blown away in a wind storm.
The generator is what converts the mechanical energy from the spinning blades into electricity.

          ]]>

Step By Step Instructions

Once you have all the materials, you can finally begin building your DIY wind turbine. It's really simple to do and doesn't require any specialized equipment to build it. First, you should attach the blades to the shaft so that you have something that looks like a propeller. Next, attach that to your generator so that when the blades start to spin, they will cause the generator to spin as well, allowing for electricity to be generated. Once that's done, you can attach that to your tower piece so that it will be high up to capture the wind energy. All you need to do now is connect everything to the base piece and place it in your desired location. Be sure to also have some wires running from the generator down to the base so you actually make use of the electricity it generates.

Final Analysis

As you can see, building home wind turbines is not that complicated and relatively easy to do. If you are serious about building one, I suggest you look for a detailed set of DIY wind turbine plans to show you exactly what you need to do. Many of them exist on the internet, but many of them are incomplete and are missing vital information. One that I can recommend you take a look at is Earth 4 Energy. It contains a detailed set of plans that can allow you to easily build your own DIY wind turbine.

If you really care about the planet earth and what man is doing to it here is something you could do- make a wind turbine. A lot of folks when they think of windmills remember the ones they've seen in postcards of Holland and Denmark. But windmills come in all sizes and a modern do-it-yourself wind turbine, using the latest technology designed to efficiently generate power from the wind, is a very different proposition.

Home wind turbines are not expensive nor or they difficult to make. To find out how you can build your own Wind Turbine visit, Wind Turbines.

All you really need to make your own are the usual tools found in any DIY enthusiasts work shop and a few hundred bucks for the components. And you may even be able to lower your costs even more if you can get materials from a recycling center. There are actually very few moving parts in the modern wind turbine and its light weight construction means that there is no need to build a tower to support the generator and its blades.

You just need to find a site on your roof where you can build a secure frame for the wind turbine. You then mount the blade and gearing onto this frame. You can get kits that contain everything you need from reputable sites online.

But before you start searching the net it's a good idea to visit with someone who has a wind turbine. Seeing a wind turbine in operation will give you an idea what is involved and you'll be able to get answers to questions you might not have thought of.

Your next step, before parting with any money should be to check with your local authorities in case there are any restrictions on height etc. And you will need to find out the direction of your local prevailing wind.

And one more thing you need to do is get a power audit. Home wind turbines come in various makes and sizes so its very important you purchase one that will power everything you want powered.

Unless you are starting from scratch installing the turbine should only take you a few days.

The windmill's blades are its driving force and if you want to avoid excessive vibration and other noise blades made from wood or fiber composites are best as they less prone to vibration and other noise than metal blades. The tail assembly that keeps the blades facing into the wind can be put together by anyone with simple woodworking or engineering skills.

The required gearing and the DC motors can also be bought online and then bolted together. With regard to the wiring it is advisable to have a qualified electrician either install your wind turbine or look over your work before you put it into operation.

It all may sound simple and it really is. However a windmill can be dangerous. Touching the blades could cause serious accidents. Also make sure that you insulate any electrics. And, if there are kids about ensure that the whole thing is child proof and pet proof too.

You could do this by fencing in any access to the construction.

If you are looking for a greener alternative to conventional sources of power you can opt for harnessing the wind energy. It is safe, cheap and inexhaustible. Above all, it has little or no environmental fallout. While many concerns are selling home wind turbines, it is not difficult to make one yourself. You can use easily available raw materials from your local hardware store to build a DIY wind turbine. You can go one step further and use recycled materials to make your wind turbine even more environment friendly.

The favorable conditions

Before you decide on building your own home wind turbine, you have to ascertain that it will ultimately be economical. Wind speed is a critical factor. The site should be windy enough and the average mean wind speed (AMWS) should be consistently high enough to keep the machine in operation. Flat plains with little constructions are most suitable.

Steps to build your own home wind turbine

In order to build a DIY home wind turbine, you have to proceed according to the following steps.

• The most crucial part of the machinery is the generator and it is also the most difficult to procure. This is the motor which actually convert the force of the blowing wind into electricity. You can use a car alternator. However, most of them require a much higher shaft speed to produce an electric current than what wind can produce. Instead you may opt for old computer type drive motors. The most suitable permanent magnet DC motor is that which produces the highest voltage at lowest revolution per minute.

• Blades of the wind turbine can be curved from wood. A much more convenient alternative is to make them from PVC pipes. Roughly, such a pipe should be one – fifth as thick as it is long. A piece of that pipe should be cut into quarters and you can fashion your own blades. A hole should be drilled at the broader end so that they can be welded to the hub.

• You then need to attach the blades to a hub. Any pulley and metal rings can serve the purpose. This unit is now joined with the motor with the help of a conduit. A tail made of metal needs to be attached to keep the blades turned into the wind.

• If you want to take the greatest advantage of the wind speed, the turbine has to be raised on a tower. Generally, a turbine has to be at least 30' higher that any construction around it for a radius of about 500'. You can make the tower from pipes, with the base made of plywood. A tee can be installed so that you could lower or raise the blades. One alternative is to use old TV towers which are now becoming obsolete as people opt for satellite television. Homeowners may even pay you a fee to remove their old TV towers.

• Finally, you require batteries and a control system to ensure the greatest utilization of the wind power that you have harnessed. Reconditioned batteries from golf carts or boats are quite suitable. You need to install a controller which will send the power produced by the generator to the batteries. A diode prevents the power from being cycled back to charge the batteries. Rather, the controller sends the current to the batteries. In case the battery is fully charged, the excess current is sent into a secondary load to prevent overcharging of batteries. When wind speed is low, this stored power can be directed back to the batteries with the help of a charger. You should of course install simple indicator switches to monitor the status of your batteries.

Following the above simple steps, your home wind turbine is ready to be used.

The traditional energy resources of the world like coal and petroleum are finite and are on the brink of exhaustion. As a result their costs keep continuously increasing from time to time. They also cause severe amount of pollution releasing vast amount of carbon dioxide and other noxious gases in the atmosphere.

If you are searching for a ‘greener' alternative, the claims of such resources as wind power need to be considered. Wherever wind blows it can be utilised to generate electricity. Higher the speed of the wind, higher is the amount of electricity produced.

Home wind turbines are gradually becoming a popular mean of harnessing this wind energy.

Wind turbines are not suitable for densely populated urban areas. High rises and other constructions tend to interrupt the flow of the wind and reduce the speed of the wind. But in the comparatively flat and less populated areas, wind energy is likely to become a very important source of power. While the technology is very new and the wind turbines are still being used as auxiliary energy resources, they are capable of meeting the entire demand of a household if the physical and natural conditions permit.

Wind energy has long been in use in its traditional form. The earliest mills used wind power to grind grains. Windmills were also used to lift water. Farms often utilise wind power for their daily activities. Home wind turbines uses the same principles but have gone a step farther by generating electricity from wind energy.

The benefits of utilising wind power are several.

• It is one of the most environment friendly sources of power in today's world. There is no emission of polluting gases or other kinds of environmental fallout. In very few exceptional cases they may prove to be a hazard for birds. However home wind turbine systems are small enough to avoid such contingencies.

• There is no fuel cost. The cost of installation of the machine is also not very high. Over the long term wind power generally proves to be cheaper than conventional electricity.

• Since a higher speed of wind generates a greater amount of electricity, it can be used as the sole source of power in windy areas. People in such areas can become completely self reliant and move off the electricity grid. However wind speed varies from time to time, so you can install a system whereby conventional electricity has to be used only on windless days.

• Excess energy generated by high wind speed on windy days can be stored in batteries. This can be sold to the utility companies providing an income.

• Installing home wind turbines significantly increase the real estate value of the house.

• There is no fuel tax levied by governments. In addition some governments offer tax breaks for such environment friendly installation.
Home wind turbines are eco friendly, long lasting and require only a low level of maintenance. They will definitely become more and more popular as the fossil fuels become scarce.

When making wind turbine blades you can use metal wood or fiberglass. Sometimes, turbine blades are also cut from pieces of PVC pipe. Fiberglass is very light and long lasting. It is not subject to stress fatigue like other materials. This is why it is most commonly used as blade material in the giant commercial wind turbines in production today.

Wood is easier to work with than fiberglass or metal and it is lighter than metal, so this makes it the obvious choice for home DIY turbines. Although there are one and 2 blade designs, most home wind turbines have 3 blades. Three blades will turn the rotor at a higher speed in lower winds, which is why it is considered best. Another consideration is that three blade turbines are quieter and easier to balance than their one and two blade counterparts.

All horizontal axis wind turbines share basically the same design style. Much like the wings on an airplane, wind turbine blades are airfoil shaped to create lift and help maximize efficiency. Since the blades move faster at the outer ends and slower in the middle, they usually have a twist to their shape. This twist optimizes angle of attack along the blade. To further improve aerodynamic performance, the blades are also tapered.

Regardless of the consistencies in blade design, their dimensions must be compatible with the overall machine design and location. Control over speed and torque is required to optimize aerodynamic efficiency in light winds. Once the turbine's maximum speed for energy creation is reached, it must be slowed down.

So the turbine must be prevented from spinning faster than its maximum capacity can handle. Diameter, blade size and weight all contribute. If the blades are too big or too small for the alternator the turbine won’t work properly, if at all. The turbine will not be able to turn into the wind or furl to a slower speed when required if the tail assembly isn't the correct size and weight and size.

As you can see, the blade specifics must be relative to the turbine’s other components. There are many do-it-yourself project guides available for building a complete home wind turbine system, but only a few include the details required to build a fully balanced and efficient system.
It has been said time and time again we are all blessed with natural resources. But beyond this, we are all also contains resources necessary for the mass production of power, many of which are renewable, meaning that they are easily replaceable.

There were people who thought highly of the environment and who criticized the usage of carbon & fossil fuels that create disaster to the world environment. They are now very satisfied by the combination of solar panels and wind turbines. This actually provides a very safe and sound supply of energy. As for the summer season, solar panels can make use of sunlight and as for the winter season, wind turbines can work to fulfill household needs.

Solar Home Energy, Magnetic Generators and Wind Power Energy are the three main alternate electricity systems available today for the common home. They are all very economical and easy to build and setup and can be purchased as a kit or plans, all the materials can be found in any hardware store.

Solar Home Energy

Creating your own system to use solar energy in your home may seem very difficult, but it is something that the average homeowner can do. Solar lights and other solar home products are, indeed, environmentally friendly. But you do not need to consider yourself an environmentalist to realize the benefits of using solar powered products.

Recent advancements in technology have enhanced the efficiency of solar panels and enable them to store the sun's solar energy even in relatively dark and cloudy conditions. These advancements in technology provided a good solution for installing solar panels in our homes.

Being cost effective is a new concept when it comes to alternative energy. The high cost associated with solar and wind energy has kept it out of the residential backyards. But not anymore! If you would really like to install a solar system in your house, you can find more information on some of the home made energy guiding websites found on the internet.

Magnetic Generators

Many of us live in areas that have neither and we are now able to generate our own electricity at home with the use of magnetic energy generators. This technology has been around for decades, but due to the interest in DIY projects in wind and solar generation, the technology has been simplified for domestic use.

A zero point magnetic power generator sounds a lot more complicated than it actually is. Most people recognize that magnets have a field that has power. The fact that a magnet can stick to a fridge should be enough proof to show that there is energy that you can extract from this. This type of technology sounds like it is out of the reach of the common man, but in reality it is much simpler for an individual to set up than for a utilities company to use.

Although this is an excellent stand alone system to implement into your home in order to generate clean, free energy, it is also an excellent addition to your solar or wind generation system.

Wind Power Energy

Home wind turbines are a great way to produce electricity that is 100% clean and can supply plenty of power in areas where wind is plentiful. Coupled with solar power and storage batteries(see below), you can produce excess electricity that you can sell back to the grid! Like solar power, wind is a renewable and clean energy resource, so there are government subsidies and tax breaks that you can take advantage of.

Availability and efficiency are only few of the many of the advantages of wind energy that would make homeowners or even commercial parties to be inclined to the widely used approach of renewable energy. And the best way to power your home with out spending much of your savings is to build your own wind power system. With an investment in just two of these three technologies, you will easily be able to generate more electricity than your home requires and will be able to earn from your investment.

In conclusion residential solar energy through the use of do it yourself solar panels is not a pipedream anymore; it is a realisable goal for anyone concerned with their energy costs and the future energy problems of the planet on which we live.

The topic of producing at least part of your own electricity for the good of the planet and to save money is important and timely.
Buying home wind turbines may possibly be considered a terrific method to stem increasing electricity costs for the home.

It is truly an great notion however, to know a few facts and conditions preceding for you evaluation and come throughout a really perfect wind turbine for the wind conditions:

First, the basic factors of the energy producing windmill:

1. Rotor and Hub Assembly:

The rotor may be the element from the mechanism that harvests the wind energy. Lift made with the aerodynamic components from the blades drives turns the blades which in turn, drives the turbine shaft. An aerodynamic hub helps make particular all readily available wind is channeled to the blades.

2. Nacelle:

All from the gear required to convert vitality and produce electricity is housed here. The generator may be the major step. It converts the mechanised vitality from the turning shaft to electricity. following the electricity reaches its last destination, an inverter then converts that electricity into a volume and sort that may possibly be utilized within your home. The inverter also keeps the energy you produce for the home from back-feeding to the energy grid and top to imbalance problems for others.

3. Towers:

Most home turbines are mounted on best of towers to make certain which they can hold optimum advantage from the wind. Some turbines are mounted on roofs for comfort sake, but it a tower is required to positioned the turbine from the area of optimum wind flow.

• Watt (and Kilowatt): watts are probably the most basic system of electric powered energy. 1,000 watts are within of a kilowatt. Most homes don't have over about 1.5 - 2.0 kilowatts optimum need at any just one time.

• audio tracks around wind turbines: relatively speaking, wind turbines - even unbelievably large kinds - are not unbelievably loud. getting a create a difference of fact, they throw off about as a complete whole lot audio tracks getting a refrigerator. They have gotten a bad rap although on account of the fact of more mature units that are nonetheless from the area that produce an great little bit more audio tracks at max rotor speed.

• Blade Shadow Flicker: turbine rotors can produce a shadow on the sunny day. It may possibly be unbelievably distracting, but on account of the fact from the large placement from the sunshine most from the year from the Northern Hemisphere, it is not regularly a problems from the United States.

• Setback range away from your home: ideally, home wind turbines must come to be mounted setback in between 600 -1,000 ft away from your home. At that distance, audio tracks and flicker aren't a complete whole large amount of an issue.

• Wildlife issues and encounters: several birds and bats are wiped out or injured each and every year getting a final result of turning turbine blades or collisions using the associated substructure, Free Energy Generator like energy delivery and man wires. The wind turbine sector has responded by making most turbine towers rock solid nowadays, to make certain that birds aren't encouraged to roost from the latticework observed in previous designs.

As prices of home wind turbines continue to come down, it will come to be progressively easy to justify just one for the home, even in decrease wind conditions. reach know this terminology and issues - and, continue your evaluation to come throughout the optimal windmill for the neighborhood area.

On the topic associated with wind energy, I get lots of questions regarding the effectiveness of wind turbines power systems according to the cost. In general, they give just as much power as solar energy systems but at the same time, they can cost as much. This is the reason why I am inclined to inform people to complement their solar energy with homemade wind turbines. By doing this, they do not need to make such a large investment on wind energy systems.

This really is excellent suggestion for those who are already using solar power because they already have that system in position. By doing this, they are able to simply piggyback another system into their solar energy system. But for those who are seeking to use a homemade wind turbine as their power source, they are able to still benefit from what I have advised. You may need to spend a bit more money up front, but they will save much on the backend.

1. Save $1000's In Upfront Costs

The upfront cost of wind turbines can frighten anyone from using wind power. Typically, the costs range anywhere from $5000 on as much as $20,000 for commercial wind generators including installation. In addition to this, it can take up to 20 years to break even on the investment. On top of this fact, if you don't have the cash for them in full, then you're going to need to take out a loan to fund the cost. The interest rate about the loan can add 10 years in to the time of realizing a break-even stage. However, you will find loan programs especially designed for those who wish to use this particular source of energy.

Therefore, a homemade wind power system is really a lot more cost-effective. There are numerous do-it-yourselfers that discover ways to develop their own wind turbines using affordable materials. They have discovered that they've been able to get their costs to around $100-$200. They've been able to make use of materials such as plastic and wood. I always tell people to go to plastic material model since it is easier to build and it last longer. Some people state that homemade wind turbines don't last as long as professional ones and I agree with this. However, you'll still be saving thousands of dollars whenever you make it yourself.

2. Have more Power for each Dollar

Energy per dollar is a look at just how much energy you produce for all the dollars you spent on the system. A great example is that wind powered generator may generate 100W and cost $100, so it is only a dollar a watt. So, the higher the power for each dollar the better your wind turbine is to be. A home made wind turbine has excellent energy per dollar. They can produce power of 1W for each dollar where commercial winter mines only generate 1/10 of a watt for each dollar.

3. Save More Money in the Long Term and Faster

Wind turbines are a non-polluting energy source and many people are beginning to use wind energy to save money without needing to make a huge investment. For this reason they are turning towards sources such as a homemade wind turbine. The investment is lower, and the cost per dollar rocks! Plus, it only takes around 4 to 6 months to recoup the investment. After that, it's all gravy. So, definitely, the homemade wind generator option is the ideal solution, financially speaking.

William Craft is a green energy enthusiast and is very interested in energy efficiency and energy saving. He has a website dedicated to renewable energy's and that has all the information you need about wind turbines. There you can find solution for the most pressing questions about solar energy, wind energy and home wind turbines. You can find pictures, Step-by-Step diagrams and schematics that will show you how everything is done.

In the old days wind energy was on a scale so big that it meant that each turbine had to have a large area surrounding them. The towers were very high, the turbines large and there was fear that something could happened, that unless there was sufficient space around the turbine, there was a danger of damage or even injuries. Generally, just those people with big pockets or with a lot of property could have a wind turbine.

Another problem, especially with wind turbines which are for home use, was a loud and irritating humming sound. This was simply because when the rotor blades, turned, they vibrated and produced this irritating sound. The only real alternative ended up being to put these turbines well away from the home. While this did help, additionally, it prevented many from discovering problems with the turbines until it was too late.

Now days, this has all transformed. Not only are home wind turbines smaller, the released more electrical power than ever before. The blades happen to be changed to create less noise, and in many cases you cannot even listen to them. Because technology for wind power is constantly advancing, they're becoming more practical for residential usage. Which means that you can possess one and start producing your own wind energy at home. If you're interested in wind power as a way to not only supplement your power needs, but possibly help you to be much more independent from energy companies, here are a few choices to choose from. A lot of it depends a lot on what kind of budget you've and how much time you are willing to invest.

Ready Made Wind Turbines

Also known as commercial wind turbines, they are going to be more expensive, but if you would like something that you can set up simple and easy, start generating electricity right away, this is the process to go. Based on your own power requirements, these turbines can cost between $6,000 to well in to the tens of thousands. While this may be costly for some, there's very little additional to do when you buy them, and many commercial providers you buy from will even install them for you.

The largest problems with these commercial generators are the initial cost to turn around potential. It can take as much as twenty years or more before these units may produce enough electricity before you see any type of rewards.

Home Turbine Wind Kits

These types of kits can be a cheaper alternative that buying a commercial unit. These types of kits tend to be complete with the whole of the materials and hardware you have to put your personal wind turbine together, and is within the mid-range when it comes to cost as well as the function involved. These types of kits ranges in cost from around $600 in order to upwards of $4,000, based on the size of the generator, as well as where your get them.

While these can seem just a little expensive still, doing a part of the work yourself can save you cash. Building from a kit is less difficult than building from scratch, and it allows you to learn more about how wind generators work as well as operate. These types of kits include all that you need, from the generator, hub, blades, as well as the cables and controller. All that you should provide may be the power inverter and the stand. While these kits can be less expensive than commercial turbines, sometimes the costs can continue to deter individuals from buying them.

Homemade Wind Turbines

This is of course one of the cheapest options when it comes to house wind energy. It involves extra work on your part, but in the end can save you up to 80% over the costs of buying a kit or perhaps a commercially made turbine, close to $200. These expenses are just for building the wind turbine itself, you will still have to pay extra for the wiring, the inverters, and the back-up systems.

There are lots of really good DIY wind turbine web sites that can help you build your own wind energy generators. Most of these turbines could be built from ordinary every day materials, wood for the stand, PVC material pipes cut in half for the blades, as well as vehicle alternators for the generator.

Converting wind power into electricity is the function of wind turbines. If you imagine a plane propeller sitting atop a tall tower, this is what a turbine looks like.Electricity is made by the generator, housed within the turbine casing, any time the rotor is turned by the wind.As with almost all types of power generators, magnets as well as copper wires are set up to create a charge any time the rotor spins. This method has been utilized for many years in various other types of generators.

There needs to be sufficient wind to move the blades for these power generators to make electricity. The standard height for wind turbines is actually 30 meters, which permits them to utilize the more powerful winds that take place at that height. The main objective of acquiring more of the wind power is to produce more electricity utilizing the turbines.Obviously there needs to be enough wind to generate electricity from the outset.Historical weather information is carefully analyzed to select sites that will supply sufficient continuous winds for the turbines. Many coastal areas are ideal because of steady high winds.Although wind speed is the most important variable to measure, wind direction may also have an impact on the performance of the installation.A time tested layout, adapted from the early wind powered water pumps, makes use of a tall fin to point the propeller straight into the wind, regardless of the direction it emanates from.

Wind turbines can create quite a lot of energy; one turbine can generate electricity for one house, or perhaps they can be used to power machinery which in turn does something like grinding wheat. You can also place the electricity into batteries to use when there is no wind. While they can certainly produce a lot of electricity, they are not cheap at all and getting back your initial investment on one will take many years.Unlike various other green energy methods, wind turbines will always work 24/7, providing there is wind.In areas that experience several hours of darkness during some seasons, turbines may be a far better green solution than solar panels. With so much anxiety about pollution these days, turbines are a great alternative because they are so clean. The standard sources of hydro, such as nuclear reactors, create tremendous pollution that could be reduced by turbines. The energy source is additionally renewable, just like solar energy, as there is always wind blowing. There is no danger of turbines lacking propulsion.

As with nearly anything there are some disadvantages of implementing wind turbines for energy. They're definitely not a pretty sight, especially because they're so massive. Many government authorities choose to put wind turbines on coastal areas and out to sea as a result of the large amounts of wind in these areas, but many people complain saying that they blight the landscape. They are also very noisy due to the rotor creating sound as it rotates.Another major issue that people have mentioned is that birds and bats (bats especially) have a tendency to fly into them. The reason stated for bats soaring into wind turbines is that the activity in the air disrupts their ability to hear and see with sonar. This doesn't happen often, but whenever it does, it is sad.

Wind turbines certainly seem to be a great source of energy, but needless to say there are downsides like with anything. They can play a major role in our long term energy plans if they are applied carefully.

Residential Wind Turbines Help Homeowners Lower Energy Bills

Wind Farms and Energy Generation

Low Energy Bills = Happy Homeowners

Most of us think of wind turbines in terms of wind farms that cover hundreds of square miles and consist of hundreds of individual wind turbines. The largest wind farms have the capacity to generate hundreds of Megawatts of electricity and the size of these wind farms range from a few wind turbines to several hundred. But wind turbines are moving toward a more affordable model so that individual homeowners can now take advantage of this alternative energy source.

Large wind farms

Texas holds the distinction of being home to the two largest wind farms in the word (as of November 2010). And the capital of the great state of Texas is Austin – the greenest city in the entire world – which is home to Green Host It, a green web hosting provider that offers carbon neutral web hosting powered by wind energy.

Home wind energy

In our previous blog entry, we wrote about home solar energy systems. So, welcome to another of our blog entries in our series of "how-to" articles on topics related to lowering energy bills. We'll keep it simple, eliminate the techno-babble and provide, not only the tools, but the know-how to achieve the goal of lower energy bills. Your success is our success.

Take control of your electricity bills

Take control of your own electricity production with home wind turbines. Pretty simple, at least in theory. By installing a home wind energy system, homeowners are able to lower energy bills. But how expensive are these home wind turbine systems and how difficult are they to install on your home?

Sticker shock

Most alternative energy sources are modeled at a payout rate of around seven years. That means that whether you choose wind power or solar power; the system is designed to produce about enough energy to pay for itself in seven years. The sticker shock comes in because many people have not calculated just how much energy they use. If we as homeowners look at the monthly payments that we are making to the energy company, the monumental consumption of power that takes place in every home is extreme and by looking at our energy cost as a whole, rather than monthly payments — the cost of an alternative energy system does not seem as extreme. When homeowners look at an alterative energy system in this light, it does not seem as expensive as traditional energy from the electrical grid.

Tax credits

Under the Energy Improvement and Extension Act along with The American Recovery and Reinvestment Act, homeowners are allowed to take 30% of the cost of any wind or solar home power system as a tax credit. Prior to 2009, this credit had an upper limit. Currently, however, the credit has no upper limit. This means that if you install a $30,000 wind power system you are eligible for a $10,000 tax credit. That is above and beyond the savings the system itself will yield in terms of power generation, and it cuts significantly into the initial investment required to start utilizing renewable energy. The key to long-term energy savings is choosing the correct home-energy investment and staying in your home long enough to benefit from the investment.

Where to start

Where to start? Well, if you don't know anything about wind energy, researching the web is the place to start. How does it work? How do you connect to it? How do you install and pay for it, for instance? A Salt Lake City company, Homewind.net, has been providing information and services to the public since 1998. They have extensive knowledge of the alternative energy industry and offer home wind turbines to help lower the cost of home energy. Their web site provides information for both residential and commercial applications and it offers a long list of home wind energy products.

Wind turbine – a short history

The mechanical basis for the turbine has been in existence for centuries, since the invention of the mill. Early men sought to find more effective ways to run their mills which led to earlier versions of the wind turbine that we know of today. The modern home wind turbine replaces the mill apparatus with a simple generator which produces electricity that can be used to power a house, boat or provide electricity to a remote location.

Installation locations

Rooftop turbines are meant to be portable, and easy to install on top of your house, garage, or atop a commercial building such as a small business. From there, they provide energy for the residents inside. Sometimes these can power the entire household, but more likely they are used in tandem with the traditional power grid to reduce use and costs.

In remote locations, the energy gathered from rooftop wind turbines can be stored in a battery for later use. Typically, however, on days the wind blows especially hard, this excess energy that is not immediately needed can be sold back to the utility company. In this way, especially if you limit your energy use, rooftop wind turbines can gradually become profitable.

Energy savings

Over the long run, home wind systems can lead to considerable energy savings which can justify investing in a residential wind turbine system, even if such a purchase can be costly up-front. One turbine should be enough to power a house if it is located in a very windy area.

Is it practical to use this energy source to power a home?

The answer is definitely a big yes. However it is important to make sure you have the right system. Which system you need will depend on where you live and how much energy you need. For instance, if you live in a very windy area you might be able to produce more electricity than you need and even sell some back into the grid, which is a nice alternative to paying for energy.

Green homes

Home wind energy systems can benefit your home and family because the quality of your life can be improved with lower energy bills, providing a better life today and in the future. Highly efficient wind turbines are no longer available for large corporations only and individual homeowners can take advantage of this renewable energy source.

If you choose an alternative energy source for your home, good for you. Sit back and relax with the thought that you are not only reducing your carbon footprint, but you are also saving on your monthly electricity bill. Then, wait for the energy savings to start building up in terms of money in your bank account. It can – if you do it right.

Wind energy is thoroughly clean, emission-free plus an economical approach to solar panels. Therefore, everyone is looking at home wind turbines in order to get away from the electrical grid, help the natural environment and save the energy costs. Based on the American Wind Energy Association, builder installed home wind turbines may range around price from $5,000 to $21,000. Make sure to have almost all the information you need before you buy.

Analyze your house and lot sizing to discover if a non commercial wind turbine is right for your needs. Unless you put in a small home wind turbine that has a blades size of a meter (about 3 feet) , you need to have at minimum a one-acre lot as suggested from the American Wind Energy Association.

Furthermore, look into the tower may be around 130 feet . tall and also the tower foundation can acquire up a reasonable sum of space. Relate to the particular wind turbine specification sheet for space needs.

Determine the average once-a-year electrical energy intake and it's cost. The U.S. Energy Information Administration records on it's website: "In 2008, the average yearly electrical power intake for a U.S. residence utility consumer was 12,100 kWh, an the average of 930 (kWh) per month." If your monthly strength intake is within the similar area as the noted average, the home wind turbine you select has to be graded in between 8 to 20 kilowatts in order to fulfill this requirement and turn into cost effective.

In addition, as your power expenditure of wind technology is primarily based on the wind, your local area should have, at least, an average wind speed of 10 miles per hour.

Learn about Wind Technology

Horizontal Axes Wind Turbine (HAWT). All the rotor blades on your wind turbine are similar to an aircraft propeller. Horizontal is often the the best angle to build up wind power. The actual rotor blades are often placed on a high tower.

Vertical Axes Wind Turbine (VAWT). Just as the name suggests, the rotor blades come in a vertical angle. This kind of wind technology helpful when wind flow through several directions will be captured.

Maximum Power. The best volume of electrical energy created on the highest wind speed.

Power Curve. Another data which illustrates the velocity of energy generation from diverse wind speeds. In line with the article "Wind Power Curves, What is Wrong, What is Better," by Ian Woofenden, "Excellent performance from low wind speeds can be most prominent inside a wind turbine, considering that where it's going to spend almost all of its time."

Comparison search. Avoid being consumed along with low cost wind turbines and presume almost all wind systems are similar. Look at company warranties, how long they have been operational and how good their wind turbines are graded. A real home wind turbine system is a long-term investment decision. Ensure that you're getting your money's value throughout product permanence, energy productivity and efficiency.

Home wind turbines are not really among the things that people would normally consider when buying renewable power systems for their homes. One of the reasons behind this is their lack of knowledge about these small wind systems that are ideal for home use. Since the most obvious alternative energy source is the sun, most people will surely look for solar panels to put up on their roofs. Although there is nothing wrong with using solar power, you should consider the power of the wind too. Even if you live in suburban areas, there is still a way for you to harness wind power using small wind systems.

The first thing that many people ask about home wind turbines is how they work. In essence, a turbine, which is placed on top of a tower, collects energy from the wind and turns it to usable electricity. In residences that are not located in remote areas, it is still necessary to get the services of your local utility company because the energy generated by the turbines will not be enough. It is also worth noting that the speed of the wind can greatly affect the electric output of your home wind system. If the wind speed is lower than 7 miles per hour, you should not expect any output from your turbine. However, if you are able to generate more electricity than what you need, your local energy company can purchase the excess power from you.

Another concern for homeowners is how much money is saved when they use home wind turbines. According to studies, a small wind system can actually cut your bill by as much as 50 to 90 percent. Some people even claim that after successfully installing a wind system in their homes, they only pay $8 to $15 dollars in monthly electricity bill for more than two-thirds of any given year.

However, you should understand that the size of your home wind turbine will greatly affect the amount of money you will save. The higher the output of the small wind turbine, the more significant the impact will be on your electric bill. It would be a good idea to use several small wind turbines in order to generate enough usable electricity. The most common turbines available in the market have 600, 800, 1,000 or 3,000 output watts.

Before you buy home wind turbines, there are some things that you need to consider. First, you have to determine local laws on installing small wind systems in your city or locality. You do not want to end up buying a wind turbine only to realize later on that you cannot use it at home. Furthermore, you also need to choose a home wind turbine that is suitable to the size of your home and the size of your property. Furthermore, you also need to look for an online store that will not only provide you with quality small wind turbines but will give you value for your money as well.

Many people consider home wind turbines as affordable and environment-friendly energy source. It is sometimes difficult to believe that wind power can be used at home because at mere mention of wind turbines, structures as tall as skyscrapers and wide as houses often come to mind. In reality, however, there are wind turbines that can be used for your home. In fact, in the past couple of years, the number of homeowners who have started using them has grown primarily because wind power technology has drastically improved and the incentives in using them have also risen, particularly because of the volatility of the prices of electricity and oil. Thus, it is not really surprising that wind power, along with other renewable sources of energy, are attracting more and more people.

Home wind turbines are not really that much different from their industrial counterparts. Although the wind systems used at home are much smaller, they also contain the same components, including a tower, wiring, a wind turbine, batteries, inverters, and controllers. If you just want to test the viability of wind turbines for your home, you can get the 600-watt wind turbine. However, if you want to generate a lot of power that will make a significant impact on your monthly bills, you should consider getting the 1,000- or 3,000-watt wind turbine.

So why are home wind turbines attractive to residential owners? For those people who live in fairly remote locations, having access to electricity can be challenging and expensive. However, if you have a home wind system in your property, you will have a reliable and renewable energy source that pays for itself. If you are really low in cash, you might consider buying home wind power systems instead of solar panels, which are a bit more expensive than wind turbines.

However, if you really want to live off the grid, it would be better if you invest in both wind and solar power to make sure that you will have ample power source. Both are easy to maintain and are relatively affordable, so you really do not have to worry about spending too much. In the long run, you would be able to recoup the money you spent on installing and buying such alternative energy systems because you save a ton on electric bills. According to experts, you can save as much as 50% to 90% of electric bills when you use small home wind turbines. Of course, the percentage of your savings depends largely on the capacity of the turbine you acquire.

Before you start buying home wind turbines for your home, it is important that you consider your location. Moreover, you should also know the regulations in your locality. It is worth noting that the laws pertaining to what type of home wind systems can be used are different from one city or state to another. Thus, before you spend a dime on a wind turbine for your home, do your research first.

Several countries are trying to save the environment and look for alternative sources of energy by looking at the advantages disadvantages of solar energy. Solar power is a major contributor to the energy crisis. If we are able to harness this power to its full extent, then we won't have any energy crisis for a long time. There has been some interest by many countries to provide solar electricity with the help of solar panels being installed in the houses and taking the advantages disadvantages of solar energy in consideration. A solar panel in the roof of every house will be a great step towards helping the environment and tackling the energy crisis.

The solar panels installed in the roof of the house can be installed easily; it will reduce the emissions made by the power stations. There are many low priced, efficient solar electricity or hot water panels available today. The solar panels work very well together with home wind turbines, given the right climate and weather patterns, or even with geothermal heating systems. There are more chances of reducing electricity bills with the help of using solar technologies and you have to have to decide on the right option to make the most of your geographical location. The solar panels will help you cut your electricity bill to large extent. There are batteries that will help to store the solar power so that even after sunset you can have full electricity. The solar panes are very easy to install and can be done without any help as well. You can go to the website energy 4 energy to learn the process. To switch to solar energy is a wise decision and you should do as early as possible to save more money.
