With high electricity bills and concerns for the environment, many people look for alternative sources of energy. One of the most popular and easy to install is a wind generator. But how do wind turbines work? The process is quite simple, really, and looks a lot like the old grain windmills with, of course, a lot of technology advances added over the years. The basic process on how wind turbines work goes like this:

the wind blowing moves the blades the blades turning move a rotational shaft the energy produced goes to a generator to turn it into electricity the DC electricity is then stored in batteries a cable drives it to a DC/AC inverter so you can use it for your AC appliances

As you can see, it's an easy process, which is a reason why so many people have had no difficulty in building their own wind generators with a basic understanding on how do wind turbines work. Nevertheless, before starting on your wind generator project, here is some information you might find useful. First, keep in mind that it is a good thing to verify different locations where you're planning to install your wind turbine(s). Checking the strength of the wind and its direction will allow you to find the best and most efficient location for you. Also, it might be beneficial to get this information at different heights, as the wind blows usually stronger on higher grounds. It's pretty easy to adjust the size of the pole holding the wind turbine to fit what suits you best.

Keep in mind that, depending on where you live, the Government might allow grants or some type of tax benefits to people building alternative sources of energy. Making some research on the subject might enable you to build your wind turbines at a fraction of the cost and is well worth the effort of looking for information on the subject. Oh, and look for the information yourself; don't rely only on a friend or neighbor telling you about it, as he might have been misinformed.

Finally, know that a basic knowledge on how do wind turbines work is almost all you need to get started. And the good news is that many DIY kits are available, explaining you in detail how to proceed to build your own wind turbine, making the project easier to do than ever.

A word of caution, however: not all guides are created equal. In order to save you time and money, it's a good idea to check some reviews made by professionals and consumers alike. It'll make the experience much more agreeable, knowing you've chosen the best guide available. So get started today, and you'll find yourself looking forward receiving your electricity bill with a broad smile!

Building your own wind turbine for your home is very easy. There are a lot of manuals available that you can download and for your convenience we have reviewed the top three.
Energy costs keep sky rocketing with no end in sight. Pollution levels are increasing and our planet is facing a warming trend that could have devastating results. So the question is what can the average citizen do to save money and help the environment at the same time? One great way to help is to lower the amount of electricity your home purchases from the utility company by creating your own power. There are a few ways to do this, and wind power is one of the easiest and more reliable ways to produce energy at your home.

What is a Wind Turbine?

A wind turbine is a simple machine that collects kinetic energy produced by wind currents and converts this energy into power that can be used in the home. Wind turbines are installed on high towers; these towers are usually around eighty to one hundred and twenty feet high. Towers must be high enough to allow the turbine to be above any turbulence generated by objects on the ground. The higher the altitude also results in higher wind speed and in turn, a higher amount of energy can be produced.

How do Wind Turbines Work?

Wind energy is used to create mechanical energy. Turbines have blades that are turned by the wind; these blades turn a shaft to which they are connected. The shaft is then connected to a generator; the mechanical energy is transferred into the generator through the shaft and converts the mechanical energy into electricity. This electricity can then be used in the home for any electrical need. Homes that are using wind turbines to produce power are still hooked up to the power grid. Being hooked up to the power grid allows the home to still have power when wind currents aren't strong enough to produce electricity. Another benefit of continuing to be connected to the power grid is that at the times your wind turbine is producing more power than your home can use, the utility company is absorbing the extra energy and paying you for it. This can lead to very low electric bills. A wind turbine can lower your power bill by 50-80% depending on the amount of wind in your area.

Types of Wind Turbines

There are two main types of turbines: horizontal- axis turbines and vertical-axis turbines. Turbines also come in different sizes as well. Utility companies use wind turbines that can range in size from 100 kilowatts up to several megawatts. These larger turbines are found in groups on wind farms. If you ever drive over the Temecula pass in California, you can see large wind farms along the highway. It is a spectacular site. Small turbines, 100 kilowatts or less, are used at homes. These are place on towers on the homeowner's property and then used to provide some of the energy needed to run the home. Since the size of the tower is quite large, they are usually used in areas where the home is on one acre or more. There are very small turbines on very small towers that may be able to be of use in urban areas or on smaller lots.

The Future of the Wind Turbine

In September of 2008, the U.S. Senate passed a bill that grants a one-year extension of the renewable energy production tax credit. If passed by the U.S. House of Representatives the tax credit would be available until December 2009. Wind power is a viable part of the solution to lessen our dependency on fossil fuels. Wind power is a renewable resource and produces no harmful pollutants. The future looks bright for wind power and hopefully, as a result, there will be a bright future for our planet too.

Ah, but just how do wind turbines work. Well, you have to understand the key components.

At its core, a wind turbine converts the energy in wind into usable electricity. Wind, of course, is a form of solar energy. As the sun heats surfaces at different rates, hot air rises and cooler air rushes in to fill the gap. This rushing process is wind. A turbine positioned in the appropriate area catches this wind.

As you might imagine, the first key component of the wind turbine is the blade. In modern horizontal turbines, there are usually three blades. The blades are often made of a plastic and fiberglass composite, but some are still wood. The blades are concave, but off center to catch the wind and spin efficiently.

The blades are connected to a double rotor assembly. The blade rotor is connected to the blades and spins as they catch wind. The blade rotor is then connected to a magnet rotor through a pulley assembly on larger turbines or directly on smaller ones for homes.

The magnet rotor does not turn anything. Instead, it spins around a magnetic alternator. This creates a magnetic field. As it passes over the wires of the alternator, an electrical charge is created. The electrical charge is then fed to a controller that converts the untamed electricity to usable DC power.

To maximize energy production, the turbine platform is fairly sophisticated. The turbine is not stationary at the top of the supporting pole. Instead, it sits on a bearing that allows the turbine to rotate towards the direction of the wind. This obviously makes it much more efficient.

To make sure the rotation is done correctly, all horizontal turbines come with a tail. Often called a boom or vane, the tail looks like something you would find on a model airplane. It is a pole out the rear of the turbine. At the end is a flat, vertical surface. This surface automatically turns towards the wind, which causes the blades on the other end of the turbine to do so also.

To the surprise of many, wind turbines are also built with a breaking system. Why brakes? Well, you may need to work on the turbine or turn it off if very high winds are expected. The brakes are often electrical in nature. The essentially break the current being fed from the turbine. They are not a way of stopping the blades from turning.

Wind power is growing in popularity and is proving to be a valuable energy source. This is particularly true for rural or underdeveloped areas. The next time you see a wind turbine, you can tell the people with you exactly how it works.
