If you are looking for a greener alternative to conventional sources of power you can opt for harnessing the wind energy. It is safe, cheap and inexhaustible. Above all, it has little or no environmental fallout. While many concerns are selling home wind turbines, it is not difficult to make one yourself. You can use easily available raw materials from your local hardware store to build a DIY wind turbine. You can go one step further and use recycled materials to make your wind turbine even more environment friendly.

The favorable conditions

Before you decide on building your own home wind turbine, you have to ascertain that it will ultimately be economical. Wind speed is a critical factor. The site should be windy enough and the average mean wind speed (AMWS) should be consistently high enough to keep the machine in operation. Flat plains with little constructions are most suitable.

Steps to build your own home wind turbine

In order to build a DIY home wind turbine, you have to proceed according to the following steps.

• The most crucial part of the machinery is the generator and it is also the most difficult to procure. This is the motor which actually convert the force of the blowing wind into electricity. You can use a car alternator. However, most of them require a much higher shaft speed to produce an electric current than what wind can produce. Instead you may opt for old computer type drive motors. The most suitable permanent magnet DC motor is that which produces the highest voltage at lowest revolution per minute.

• Blades of the wind turbine can be curved from wood. A much more convenient alternative is to make them from PVC pipes. Roughly, such a pipe should be one – fifth as thick as it is long. A piece of that pipe should be cut into quarters and you can fashion your own blades. A hole should be drilled at the broader end so that they can be welded to the hub.

• You then need to attach the blades to a hub. Any pulley and metal rings can serve the purpose. This unit is now joined with the motor with the help of a conduit. A tail made of metal needs to be attached to keep the blades turned into the wind.

• If you want to take the greatest advantage of the wind speed, the turbine has to be raised on a tower. Generally, a turbine has to be at least 30' higher that any construction around it for a radius of about 500'. You can make the tower from pipes, with the base made of plywood. A tee can be installed so that you could lower or raise the blades. One alternative is to use old TV towers which are now becoming obsolete as people opt for satellite television. Homeowners may even pay you a fee to remove their old TV towers.

• Finally, you require batteries and a control system to ensure the greatest utilization of the wind power that you have harnessed. Reconditioned batteries from golf carts or boats are quite suitable. You need to install a controller which will send the power produced by the generator to the batteries. A diode prevents the power from being cycled back to charge the batteries. Rather, the controller sends the current to the batteries. In case the battery is fully charged, the excess current is sent into a secondary load to prevent overcharging of batteries. When wind speed is low, this stored power can be directed back to the batteries with the help of a charger. You should of course install simple indicator switches to monitor the status of your batteries.

Following the above simple steps, your home wind turbine is ready to be used.

The traditional energy resources of the world like coal and petroleum are finite and are on the brink of exhaustion. As a result their costs keep continuously increasing from time to time. They also cause severe amount of pollution releasing vast amount of carbon dioxide and other noxious gases in the atmosphere.

If you are searching for a ‘greener' alternative, the claims of such resources as wind power need to be considered. Wherever wind blows it can be utilised to generate electricity. Higher the speed of the wind, higher is the amount of electricity produced.

Home wind turbines are gradually becoming a popular mean of harnessing this wind energy.

Wind turbines are not suitable for densely populated urban areas. High rises and other constructions tend to interrupt the flow of the wind and reduce the speed of the wind. But in the comparatively flat and less populated areas, wind energy is likely to become a very important source of power. While the technology is very new and the wind turbines are still being used as auxiliary energy resources, they are capable of meeting the entire demand of a household if the physical and natural conditions permit.

Wind energy has long been in use in its traditional form. The earliest mills used wind power to grind grains. Windmills were also used to lift water. Farms often utilise wind power for their daily activities. Home wind turbines uses the same principles but have gone a step farther by generating electricity from wind energy.

The benefits of utilising wind power are several.

• It is one of the most environment friendly sources of power in today's world. There is no emission of polluting gases or other kinds of environmental fallout. In very few exceptional cases they may prove to be a hazard for birds. However home wind turbine systems are small enough to avoid such contingencies.

• There is no fuel cost. The cost of installation of the machine is also not very high. Over the long term wind power generally proves to be cheaper than conventional electricity.

• Since a higher speed of wind generates a greater amount of electricity, it can be used as the sole source of power in windy areas. People in such areas can become completely self reliant and move off the electricity grid. However wind speed varies from time to time, so you can install a system whereby conventional electricity has to be used only on windless days.

• Excess energy generated by high wind speed on windy days can be stored in batteries. This can be sold to the utility companies providing an income.

• Installing home wind turbines significantly increase the real estate value of the house.

• There is no fuel tax levied by governments. In addition some governments offer tax breaks for such environment friendly installation.
Home wind turbines are eco friendly, long lasting and require only a low level of maintenance. They will definitely become more and more popular as the fossil fuels become scarce.

The first usage of wind power dates back more than three thousand years. Windmills, which we all know from literature, were used primarily in the west between 1300 and the late 1800's. None of this means anything to the modern homeowner, considering a wind turbine as a possible alternative energy source, however. What you do need to know is that wind power is not as expensive to impalement as you might think. This may sound funny, but you must determine first, if it is windy enough where you live, to justify a wind turbine. Many use wind power as a back up to solar, while still others use them both in conjunction, as an alternative energy package.

Just how much energy can a wind turbine produce, and will it really make a dent in your electric bill? First you must determine how windy it is where you are planning to install it. This is not a question about whether it is ever windy where you live, it is probably windy during storms, but that is merely an observation about the weather. What you want to know about is the long-term average wind speed for your area, or historic climate data, not day-to-day weather. Obviously it will produce a greater amount of energy the more the small turbine spins. They are defined as having rated capacities of up to 100 kilowatts. So if you were thinking that one wind generator will power your house, I'm sorry but it won't.

Keep in mind that the wind turbine is simply a collector just like a solar panel is. In this case the collector is the spinning rotor, made up of a number of blades that rotate to turn the electrical generator. Small blades result in a small rotor diameter, which translates into a small collector area, which further translates into small amounts of generated electricity. To properly access the wind flow and generate enough electricity, wind turbines are installed on high towers that rise above any trees or surrounding buildings. Your roof top might not be the right place unless a tower is utilized. It is advisable to get your neighbors permission before installing such a structure. For whatever reason you chose not to have a high enough tower, it won't matter when it comes to generating adequate energy. It is better not to install a wind turbine in the first place, rather than to not have it high enough. There is simply little energy in low winds that you can convert into usable electricity. Considering that most homes do have more than one energy source, the average household consumes about 1,000 kWh of electricity per month, or about 12,000 kWh per year. Depending on your wind resource and the tower height required to get the wind turbine above the trees, a wind system designed to generate that kind of electric capacity would have to have a very large rotor. Even if you decided to go with several smaller wind turbines, the cost can be in the thousands.

There is of course another option that, depending on your situation, can save you thousands of dollars. I am referring to making this a do-it-yourself project. There are kits available that will cut your cost in half. Even better than that there are online instructional guides that will walk you through the entire process step by step. Small wind turbine system can be constructed for literally pennies on the dollar in this manner. For those of you who don't have either the time or the inclination to do it all yourself, I might suggest that you take advantage of the current work shortage by hiring a couple of competent handymen to construct the entire project. I bet with the right instructions, you could bring it in for a tenth of the original estimate.

My own extensive research has helped me narrow down the best of the best instructional guides, complete with blueprints, photos, for that do-it-yourself wind and/or solar power project you might be considering. Obviously, I can't go into great detail in this article, but if I have piqued your interest, you can get all the facts of this or many other ideas on how to go green at my site Possibly GREEN.

There you'll find the right ways to live a greener life, including up to date articles and information on How Wind Turbines Work...Green Power for Your Home. At Possibly GREEN you will find the right ways to live a greener life, including information on how to convert your car inexpensively, grow an organic garden, live chemically free, and even find green jobs in your area.

Now in my late 50's, I consider myself to be a Jack Of All Trades And Master Of a few things. I was a struggling actor for 25 years.
So how wind turbines work? The wind's energy has been harnessed by us for more than one thousand years. At first we only used windmills to pump water and grind grains. Nowadays, we use windmill's modern equivalent-wind turbines to generate electricity. They are mounted on a tower, just like windmills. At 30 meters or more above ground, they can take advantage of the faster and less turbulent wind. Turbines catch the wind's energy with their propeller-like blades. There are usually two to three blades on a turbine connected to a shaft called rotor.

Wind turbines' blades are like the wings of an aircraft. When wind blows, low-pressure air is formed on the downwind side of the blades. The low-pressure air then pulls the blades toward it, thus makes the rotor turns. This force is called lift. The lift is much stronger than drag-the wind's force against the front side of the blade. Lift and drag combines and causes the rotor to spin like a propeller, and then the turning shaft spins a generator to generate electricity.

Wind turbines can be used stand-alone, or they can be connected to a power grid or even combined with a solar power system. For utility-scale (megawatt-sized) sources of wind energy, a lot of turbines are usually built close together to form a wind plant. Many power companies now use wind plants to supply electricity to their customers. Stand-alone turbines are mostly used for communications or water-pumping. However, homeowners, farmers, and ranchers in windy areas can also use turbines as a way to supply electricity. Small wind systems also have potential as distributed energy resources. Distributed energy resources refer to a variety of small, modular power-generating technologies that can be combined to improve the operation of the electricity delivery system.

Building a wind turbine and using it to generate electricity at home is not difficult. And this is a great idea because you will save a lot of money on bills. There are some very good guides on how to build a wind turbine with only $200. If you are interesting in generating electricity from wind ,check the link below to learn more.

How do wind turbines work - It might seem like a magical process when, seeing the rotors of a windmill turning gently in a breeze, you think of this motion being transformed into electricity that can be used to power homes and businesses. Yet all wind turbines work on the same principles, from the earliest wind scooping device invented thousands of years ago to the most sophisticated huge utility turbine.

Essentially, every wind energy system transforms the kinetic energy of the wind into mechanical or electrical energy. Obviously there are huge variations in size but all wind turbines work in the same way, the smallest just the same as its largest cousin. The overall configuration is identical.

How wind turbines work is this: each system consists of a rotor ("blades") which convert the wind's energy into rotational shaft energy, a nacelle ("enclosure") containing a drive train and a generator. So you can easily visualize how wind turbines work. The energy that moves the wind ("kinetic energy") moves the blades. This energy in turn moves the drive train ("mechanical energy"). This energy is then turned into electricity ("electrical energy") in the generators and then stored in batteries or transferred to home power grids or utility companies for use in the usual way.

The tower of a wind turbine is the most dominant thing you see of a wind turbine and yet it is not the main component of how wind turbines work. It is there simply to hold the rotors at a height sufficient to make optimal use of the available wind. It also holds the electronic equipment associated with transferring electricity but these could be housed anywhere if there was no tower involved.

Another visible difference which may lead to confusion as to how wind turbines work is the style of the rotors. There are two basic designs used commercially: the vertical axis or "egg beater" type which looks something like the top sails of old sailing clippers, and the horizontal axis or "propeller" type. These modern windmills look a lot different from the old water-mill type of turbine. They look more like airplane propellers. Most of the utility scale turbines in the market today are the horizontal type.

There is also experimentation under way to use other types of rotors. For instance, a Hong Kong company is producing electricity from a wind turbines the rotors of which are a string of little "propeller wheels" mounted on a rooftop. These look like children's party windmills in little circles, all joined together. Although the shape is innovative, the underlying principles concerning wind generation is exactly the same.

When asking how do wind turbines work and receiving this simple explanation, it is hard to imagine why they are not less expensive. The good news is that due to how wind turbines work there are great opportunities to make them cheaper once critical mass is reached and more people opt for wind power generated electricity. Mass production will bring down costs. But at the moment the material and installation costs are making them prohibitive to the average consumer who paradoxically needs cheap electricity the most.

With high electricity bills and concerns for the environment, many people look for alternative sources of energy. One of the most popular and easy to install is a wind generator. But how do wind turbines work? The process is quite simple, really, and looks a lot like the old grain windmills with, of course, a lot of technology advances added over the years. The basic process on how wind turbines work goes like this:

the wind blowing moves the blades the blades turning move a rotational shaft the energy produced goes to a generator to turn it into electricity the DC electricity is then stored in batteries a cable drives it to a DC/AC inverter so you can use it for your AC appliances

As you can see, it's an easy process, which is a reason why so many people have had no difficulty in building their own wind generators with a basic understanding on how do wind turbines work. Nevertheless, before starting on your wind generator project, here is some information you might find useful. First, keep in mind that it is a good thing to verify different locations where you're planning to install your wind turbine(s). Checking the strength of the wind and its direction will allow you to find the best and most efficient location for you. Also, it might be beneficial to get this information at different heights, as the wind blows usually stronger on higher grounds. It's pretty easy to adjust the size of the pole holding the wind turbine to fit what suits you best.

Keep in mind that, depending on where you live, the Government might allow grants or some type of tax benefits to people building alternative sources of energy. Making some research on the subject might enable you to build your wind turbines at a fraction of the cost and is well worth the effort of looking for information on the subject. Oh, and look for the information yourself; don't rely only on a friend or neighbor telling you about it, as he might have been misinformed.

Finally, know that a basic knowledge on how do wind turbines work is almost all you need to get started. And the good news is that many DIY kits are available, explaining you in detail how to proceed to build your own wind turbine, making the project easier to do than ever.

A word of caution, however: not all guides are created equal. In order to save you time and money, it's a good idea to check some reviews made by professionals and consumers alike. It'll make the experience much more agreeable, knowing you've chosen the best guide available. So get started today, and you'll find yourself looking forward receiving your electricity bill with a broad smile!

Building your own wind turbine for your home is very easy.

Wind energy is an environmentally inert, clean, and inexhaustible source of electric power that, as it turns out, is really just another form of solar energy. The sun creates wind by its uneven heating of the planet's atmosphere. It's moderated by the earth's rotation and irregularities in its surface. The planet's terrain, water bodies, and vegetation then affect the wind flow patterns. With the invention of wind turbines, we can now harness the wind's energy and use it instead of purchasing electricity from the utility companies that are derived from non-renewable sources.

The easiest way to understand how wind turbines work is to think of a fan operating in reverse ? rather than electricity spinning the blades and thus generating wind, the wind spins the blades, thereby generating electricity.

Breaking it down to it's simplest components, a wind turbine operates as follows:

the wind turns the blades

the blades spin a shaft

the shaft connects to a generator

the generator produces electricity

To expand on that simplification, the turbine's blades are connected to a hub that's mounted atop a turning shaft which runs into a gear transmission box that increases the turning speed which, in turn, is connected to a high speed shaft that cranks the generator. If the wind speeds get too high, a brake is deployed to slow the blades down and prevent damage being done to the system.

There are two basic types of wind turbine:

horizontal axis wind turbines: the kind most commonly in use today and the focus of U.S.
Department of Energy research on wind power, these come in two varieties ?

2-blade horizontal axis turbines spin downwind

3-blade horizontal axis turbines spin upwind

vertical axis wind turbines

The size of a wind turbine will influence its power generating capacity, with the smaller windmills that produce under 50 kilowatts being the type most commonly used to power water pumps, telecom dishes, and homes.

In an innovative advancement known as hybrid wind systems, these smaller turbines are also being used in combination with solar (photovoltaic) systems, rechargeable deep-cycle batteries, and diesel generators to provide storable, on-demand power in more remote, off-the-grid places.

In most residential situations, a wind turbine is used as a supplemental source of power in combination with local, on-the-grid, utility power. There is something called a cut-in speed (7-10 miles per hour), below which the wind turbine will cease to provide an output, and the utility grid provides the structure's power. Above the cut-in speed, the wind turbine kicks in and the grid power supply is proportionately reduced (depending on the structure's energy draw at the given moment).

If the output produced by the wind turbine exceeds the draw from the structure (and/or storage devices, like batteries), the excess power is then sold back to the pubic utility company. Use of wind energy can reduce a residence's energy costs by, on average, 50-90%, though these numbers are influenced by a variety of factors and, as such, can fluctuate greatly.

In a typical residence that uses under 10,000 kilowatt hours per year of electric power, a 5-15 kilowatt wind turbine should more than suffice. This type of system can run anywhere from $6,000-$22,000 to install, depending on a variety of factors, including: its size, your intended application, and any service contracts entered into with the manufacturer.

Being that certain situations (such as in the city) make personal wind power use an unviable option, a general rule of thumb is to consider installing your own wind power system if and only if you pay at least 10 cents per kilowatt hour and your location's average wind speeds exceed 10 miles per hour.

The larger wind turbines have capacities upwards of 50 kilowatts, running these days into the several-megawatt range. These windmills, known as utility scale turbines, can be grouped together and connected to central lines for transmitting and distributing in bulk to the local utility grids that, in turn, sell that power to homes and businesses across the land. These are called wind power plants or wind farms.
