Vertical axis windmills have been around ever since the 9th century when early Persians used it to harness the power of the wind to pump water and grind their grains. This design has stood the test of time and is still being used today in the form of the Savonius wind turbine.

Around the turn of the century a Finnish engineer by the name of Sigurd J. Savonius introduced the vertical axis wind turbines or VAWT, a revolutionary design of wind turbine that is not only reliable but is also very easy to build. It was previously used for installations that requires generator that produces small amounts of electricity that is very dependable. This design of wind turbine is the most used for modern anemometers as well as sea buoys that only require a bit of power for maintenance.

The Savonius wind turbine is also the design of choice when choosing wind turbines to supply renewable energy for common households. This is because as compared to the horizontal axis wind turbines the Savonius design is quieter, which means you won't get any calls from the homeowners association telling you to take down your noisemaker of a generator. And also because of the compact blade design it poses less of a threat to birds and other flying creatures.

And since the blades are mounted on a vertical position it can catch the wind that comes from any direction, so there's no need to rotate the thing whenever the wind changes direction. Horizontal wind generators are mounted on a pivot which allows it to swivel to the direction on which the wind is coming from, and while the blades are tracking the wind no electricity is being produced. The Savonius design is much more efficient because of its vertical orientation it can always collect the passing breeze which the horizontal design might miss, no matter how weak the wind might be.

Another nice advantage of the Savonius windmill is that the shaft of the generator can be placed nearer to the ground, meaning there is less weight at the top of the tower. Because of the lower centre of gravity there is little need for the tower to be stabilized.

Because of its simple design you can save a lot of time and money as compared to the standard horizontal installation because it needs less hardware to secure it properly, thus resulting in a lower cost, which means you can regain your initial investment faster and will cut your electricity bill to just a fraction of what it was before.

And as with most machines, if there are fewer moving parts there is a lesser chance of the windmill breaking down. And if it does need a bit of preventive maintenance it can be done easier because of the vertical shaft that allows the generator to be placed at ground level.

Having a windmill to utilize the wind's power to generate electricity for your home is a very earth-friendly thing to do, but if you really want to get the most out of this renewable source of energy then you should choose the Savonius wind turbine.

Are you ready to start generating your own energy?
To find make your own wind turbine guides to a wind turbine of your own is not that hard. It is important to get started with wind turbines blade outbputn, finding a tower and finding all of the parts you want first.

need to get started with your windmill?

Detailed wind turbine instructions Regular tools that could be found at all workshops 4 days are needed to complete the wind turbine with your own tools.

The total cost for a made turbines will cost you 2200$+ giving you a very low output turbines.

We just couldn't think the prices when we started attempting to find one a few years back. We made a decision to make our own with wind turbine manuals we could find.

It truly wasn't that tough either all of the were straightforward to find and the process of building wasn't sophisticated either.

I made my first in 2weekends ( now i have 3 built ) .

I suggest that you order the Direct Current motor important to generate energy for your home after you start, do this first. It takes a few days to have it delivered to your home from the sources listed.

While you are waiting you can make the wind turbine blades and find an appropriate tower.

A small one is best made out of PVC blades but you will be limited to about 5 foot blade dia ( three foot individual blades ). This size will only make about 500 watts in energy but it is a good start.

If you try and use PVC for bigger blades they have an inclination to break under high wind forces as i found out this past year when one of our PVC blades broke.

My two bigger windmills are made with wood blades. You can use cedar, spruce or hard woods for blades larger than 7 foot diameter. Which is the minimum to produce 1000 watts . The wind mill manuals to make one show you the simple way to make very simple blades for your windmill.

You can use old TV towers for your own tower to get your blades up there. Take it slow assembling all of the parts according to the instructions so that your wind turbine works .

Isn't it time you got started manufacturing your own cheap electricity for your house? Aren't you tired of $400 poweral bills? I know i sure were just before i moved off the grid and started using replaceable energy.

Lots of us have very hard time financially & will welcome anything, which can stop, or else slow down, financial bleeding. We may not keep heads above the water as water is continually rising. One of biggest things that you may do in order to save a few money is lower the utility bills. You might be hearing all hype about the wind turbines as well a the vertical axis wind turbine, however what it means? Using power of wind to run the machines is not the new concept. It has been around for several years. We have got know how you can make that work more efficiently as well as we can store that for use at later time.

Advantages of the vertical turbine is you may actually add a lot more blades without even taking up more of room. With more and more blades turbine is 'sensitive' and will work with the lower wind speeds.

It does not matter what style of the turbine that you select for home use it will not be cost effective for buying a turbine. The turbines will cost plenty of dollars in a few cases & it will take a very long time getting the investment back. Also, there is hope, you may very easily build your turbine and there are the manuals on internet that can walk you through process. Making the turbine is actually very easy as well as you will not need to have previous experience, and skills. Materials that you will need to build the turbine is bought locally anywhere hardware products are been sold.

For most of the people it will just take one day or so for building the turbine. Doesn't matter which way that you choose to go: windmill style, and vertical axis turbine you are happy to know it will not cost a much for building but it can save you much on the energy bills. It as well does not have to get pointed in direction of wind. Disadvantages of the vertical axis turbines is there are pulsating torques, which will happen during every turn when turbine is running in same direction as wind. They make the smaller amount of the energy from wind.

Different Kinds of the Vertical Axis Turbines

Windmill with the rotation sail and this kind of the turbine is newest out since it looks like the sails on ship when it is up & running. Sails will expand or else contract to changing winds. Also, there is 3 sails on it & speed is also managed through the magnetic counter, which expands or else contracts the vertical sails. Also, it has the control unit, which can help to control sails so damage can be minimal. Sails may tear but frame is durable & may last through storms.

The aerodynamic turbine is also made up of the airfoil base, which is made to capture kinetic energy to flow from the artificial current to center. It may use most of air mass, which passes through redirecting that over upper turbines. It will respond to wind as well as creeks, rivers, oceans and other free water flowing systems.

The focus of this comprehensive analysis provides decision makers with a detailed and insightful look into the current and future opportunities and threats available in the inverter market for Alternative Energy Resources.

Among the areas covered in this report are the technology, architecture and packaging trends affecting the industry, as well as a thorough discussion of new and emerging technologies and materials, applications, potential threats and the latest regulatory developments and standards. Over 30 illustrations, graphs and tables are presented depicting a variety of power system schematics and comparisons, technologies, product introductions, packaging solutions, efficiency standards and other relevant information.

Subjects included in this analysis are:
Application Segments
Alternative Energy Developments
Photovoltaics
Photovoltaic Inverter Technologies
Wind Power
Fuel Cells
Policy and Regulatory Framework for Development
Cost Dynamics of Renewable Resources
Cost Dynamics of Inverter Technology
Technology Trends and Developments
Product Innovations and Developments

Executive Summary

Led by the growing photovoltaic market (PV), the outlook for inverters used in Alternative Energy Resource technology is expected to remain strong. Industry growth in this application will be driven by a combination of government incentives and declining PV module prices. Projected to make up over 95% of the market, the inverters used in PV installations, both small (1-5kW) and large (>6MW), will far outpace those used in either wind or fuel cell applications.

Driven by the need to develop alternative sources of energy, limit greenhouse gasses and reduce the dependence on foreign energy supplies, the market forces driving the alternative energy resources industry vary by region. In Europe, the primary driving forces are feed-in tariffs, which have been successfully used in 16 EU countries, most notably Germany, Italy and Spain. In fact, in Europe renewables comprise the fastest-growing segment of the energy market. In North America, unlike Europe, the alternative energy industry is driven by a combination of regulations, subsidies and tax incentives and legislation. In contrast, Asia employs a patchwork system of incentives including subsidies and other government actions. In this region, the primary focus on alternative energy is the alleviation of power shortages and the development of backup and emergency power.

A particularly significant technological and architectural trend includes the continued development of Building Integrated Photovoltaic (BIPV) systems. A BIPV system involves integrating photovoltaic modules into the building envelope material and power generators. Evidence of this can be seen in the number of successful BIPV projects worldwide, ranging from individual residential units to large commercial developments. . The development of BIPV systems is also significant because in buildings, it can play more roles than solely producing electricity. As an example, Sharp makes translucent solar PV panels that incorporate light-emitting diodes (LEDs) to provide illumination as
well as power.

The emergence of technology developed to address the problem of PV shading is another area of expected growth over the next several years. Considered one of the biggest challenges facing photovoltaics, a small amount of shade can lead to disproportionate power loss of more than 50%. One completely shaded cell can reduce a solar panel's output by as much as 75%. In a response to this challenge, a number of companies are developing products specifically designed to counter the effects of PV shading in both the residential and commercial sectors.

The move towards transformerless inverters has also made significant strides in the PV industry over the past several years. Despite concerns about safety, size limitations and the lack of technological maturity, they are considered considerably more efficient and can be produced at a much more competitive price. In fact, transformerless inverters continue to advance around the world and have achieved a global market share of about 70%. Additional developments in inverter technology include improvements in communications and monitoring and the trend towards longer warranties.

The trend towards more efficient inverters has also made considerable progress. In an effort to improve the efficiency of the technology, semiconductor companies are developing discrete IGBTs, MOSFETs such as CoolMOS as well as Silicon Carbide (SiC) devices in power modules and stacks, with the objective of raising solar inverter efficiency to 98 %, and with the purpose of feeding as much solar-based electricity into the power grid as possible. A number of semiconductor companies are developing technologies designed to increase efficiency and reduce electricity waste to a minimum.

Despite the efforts of a number of government and regulatory bodies worldwide, the goal of interconnection and regulatory standards is still a work in progress. However, there are
a number of groups working on electrical interconnection standards with the objective of reducing or removing barriers between distributed generation technology and the utility grid. A survey done found that most projects, including PV, wind and fuel cells, meet some sort of resistance from the utility companies when they try to interconnect with the grid. The expensive and sometimes difficult interconnection requirements currently in place worldwide comprise a key barrier to the increased use of alternative systems. One of the more interesting technologies being developed to drive interconnection is the development of a "smart grid." However, removing current interconnection requirements is not as simple as changing the policies, and a method of resolving these barriers is ongoing.

Despite the attention given to large multi-megawatt wind farms, which are projected to continue growing, both in size and number of installations, most of the opportunities for inverter manufacturers are in the small wind turbine market (<100kW). Although the market for wind power inverters is only a fraction of the size (<3%) of the PV market, the small wind market is experiencing a number of significant developments, including the emergence of Building Integrated Wind Energy (BIWE) and the further development of vertical axis wind turbines (VAWTs).

Although the smallest of the three applications presented in this report, fuel cells present another important opportunity for inverter manufacturers. Eighty percent of the fuel cell
units currently produced serve the stationary market in a number of capacities, including combined heat and power (CHP) applications, distributed generation on-site power and backup power. An especially important development is the FCC 07-107 requirement to provide eight hours of emergency backup power at remote terminals or wireless sites and 24 hours of power backup at central offices or switch sites. As a result of this FCC requirement, the telecom industry presents a promising growth opportunity for the fuel cell industry.

In addition, the rate of refurbishment and replacement of the existing building stock, combined with the new ultra-efficient housing/building laws such as those described in the European directive (2002/91/EC), contribute to a growing market for residential micro-combined heat and power. Fuel cells are an enabling or bridging technology which can allow the environmental and efficiency benefits of CHP to migrate into the residential market. In this respect, fuel cell technologies represent a market opportunity for the clean generation of electricity and provision of hot water and heating.

Wind turbines are one of the earliest devices to be used for power generation. Over time, wind generators’ designs have steadily improved, particularly when it comes to how the blades that spin the turbines’ rotors have been built. Today, it’s possible to produce much more power from much less wind than ever before, which is largely due to these improvements.

The earliest wind turbine blades were basically nothing more than large mats made from reeds. Their main drawback was a lack of durability. If the winds were too strong, these blades would often be broken.

The next step in the development of wind turbine blades was the cloth sail. This type of blade was combined with a vertical axis design to create some of the early windmills, which used wind power in order to perform grain processing functions.

The next major type of blade to be introduced was the wood blade, which was usually used in conjunction with a horizontal axis configuration. The impetus for the new turbine designs was the design of airplane blades, which had recently made important breakthroughs. The main advantage of wooden blades over previous models was that they could be both lighter and stronger, and therefore they were much better suited to generating energy in a wider variety of conditions.

This was the period in which wind turbines were first used as a means of producing electricity. Larger wind turbines were soon built to capitalize on these advancements, providing electricity in commercial settings.

In order to meet divergent needs, the differences between horizontal axis turbine blade designs and vertical axis ones started to become even sharper. In terms of horizontal axis blade design, most of the changes would take the form of adjustments in blade shape and pitch, materials, and the number of blades used per rotor.

3-blade designs are more or less the standard for horizontal axis wind turbines, as they usually provide a good balance of stability and rotor speed. Modern turbines feature composite blades, which are both lightweight and durable. Wind turbines with these blades can not only spin at higher speeds, but can also pick up low-speed winds, which older models couldn’t do.

Furthermore, vertical axis wind turbines have seen a number of developments which have opened them up to a wide variety of applications. The rotation for these units is usually provided by designs that take advantage of wind drag or wind lift.

Vertical axis turbines are able to harness the power of the wind regardless of its direction. Horizontal axis turbines don’t provide quite the same consistency of production. Their ability to produce power at lower elevation makes vertical axis turbines especially well suited to use in residential settings.

With so many ecological threats we face today, the concept of wind energy is gradually gaining a strong footing. It is imperative now to give due credence to such renewable sources of energy.

Wind is basically the movement of air, which depends on the sun. Solar heating patterns on the surface of the earth create this phenomenon. Different land and water bodies on our planet’s surface absorb the sun’s heat at varied rates at different times of the day; for e.g. during the day, the air over land surfaces heat faster than over water. On expanding, this warm air rises with cooler, denser air replacing it, creating a movement known as wind. During the night we see the reverse of this pattern. Geographical location, vegetation density and the intensity of solar heat are also some of contributors in wind creation. When in motion, the air has copious amounts of resulting energy that can be gainfully used in various forms and for various purposes.

Thus the wind is not only something pleasant you look forward to on a balmy day, but can be one of the most effective forms of energy creation, when harnessed correctly. Since it depends on the sun, wind power or energy is a renewable and ‘green’ way to power our world. It can be used to create or supplement electricity and mechanical power.

The vital cog in the process of wind energy usage and creation for the generation of power, are the Wind Turbines. These turbines employ the mechanics of a reverse fan. Powered by the wind’s energy, its blades help in generating electricity. The basic mechanics consist of the turbine’s blades that are put into motion by the wind, and are connected to generators. Finally, these generators are used to transform this rotational energy into electric power.

How they work:

Turbines typically have two or three blades. Even in a wind-less situation, the blades on a wind turbine are positioned at an angle of 45 degrees so that the turbine can trap all possible energy even with the slightest of winds. When in contact with the wind, the fronts of the rotor blades (which have the larger surface area) propel to a 0 degree angle and are bombarded with energy, from the front and the back. In essence, this creates positive pressure on the fronts of the blades and negative pressure behind them, causing a suction type effect which in turns lifts the blades and transfers the wind energy to kinetic energy. This force turns the shaft connected to the rotors, creating a strong rotational energy which gets converted to electric energy by the generators.

An electric control system connects the generator. The entire system channels the produced electric energy to high voltage transformers and eventually the grid. These grids are responsible for supplying energy to places like homes, farms, factories, water pumps, as well as commercial power suppliers.

The efficiency of wind turbines depends on various factors such as location, geographical factors, mechanics, rotor shape/size, etc... Output can be regulated by a constant or variable rotational speed, as well as adjustable and non-adjustable blades. This control is essential because sometimes the wind’s speed puts too much stress on the turbine, causing safety controls to kick-in and apply brakes to the rotor to prevent it from damage.

Types of Wind Turbines:

Wind turbines can be classified into two major types. Although they work on the same basic premise, the process and design differ greatly.

Horizontal Axis Wind Turbine (HAWT): Horizontal axis wind turbines are more widely used and are the more traditional style in turbine design, mostly seen in wind farms. These are generally used to power electrical generators, because of the usage of gearboxes which enable change in rotation speed. Efficiency of a HAWT is generally high because of the angles the blades are set at, a blade pitch that is adjustable and the height of the tower (as greater wind speeds are found higher up from the ground, higher towers typically capture more wind energy). A horizontal turbine therefore is mainly run by a system of blades/rotors, a generator, a gearbox, the shaft and a supporting tower.

Vertical Axis Wind Turbine (VAWT): Vertical axis wind turbines, as the name suggests, consist of a vertically arranged rotor shaft. This is also known as the ‘egg beater’ style. A vertical axis wind turbine has proven to be very useful at locations where the wind direction tends to vary. This type of turbine however, is said to be not as reliable and efficient as a HAWT, one of the reasons being the low placement of the rotors.

Many people living in cities are itching to take advantage of residential wind turbines, but this may prove to be difficult. Cities are some of the least hospitable places for wind turbines to be located. Wind turbines work most efficiently when placed in undisturbed airflow. Any large obstacles nearby, such as buildings will greatly affect the amount of power that a turbine can produce.

To find a suitable residential wind turbine, the best option may be a vertical axis wind turbine or VAWT. You may have seen these turbines before, most commonly they are shaped like large egg beaters and spin around a pole mounted vertically. This is in contrast to traditional wind turbines which have propeller-like blades.

Vertical axis wind turbines have much better performance than traditional wind turbines when used in turbulent environments. This means that in a residential wind turbine application, a VAWT will provide more power than a traditional turbine. There are many different styles of VAWTs and each has its own advantages and disadvantages.

Savonius type turbines are completely solid, and don’t have blades as you are used to seeing. Instead, a Savonius turbine has two (or more) curved surfaces which face the wind full on, and spin the turbine about its axis. These turbines are large and heavy compared to other aerodynamically-driven turbines and are also less suitable for use as residential wind turbines due to their size.

Darrieus type wind turbines are the egg-beater style VAWTs mentioned earlier. These turbines have curved or even more complex blades to take advantage of turbulent wind conditions. Traditionally, these turbines have been very large. This means that their suitability as residential wind turbines is limited; however they are more suitable than Savonius type turbines. These turbines do have several issues which make their design more complicated. Specifically, the turbines generate maximum torque at two points in their rotation, and thus the power they generate is not “smooth” as it would be in a traditional wind turbine. Additionally, these turbines have issues with vibration that could cause the blades to fail prematurely.

Finally, airfoil based wind turbines, which are a subset of Darrieus turbines. Instead of curved blades, the blades of these turbines are parallel to the main shaft. This means that they generate more constant power than Darrieus turbines, much closer to traditional wind turbines. These turbines are the closest match to the requirements of residential wind turbines. Much research into this type of turbine is ongoing and new developments are happening in this field every day.

People show an increasing tendency towards having their own wind turbines for generating their own electricity and also for reducing their contribution to environmental problems arising from carbon based energy sources.

Wind turbines and their operation
A wind turbine is a machine that can convert the kinetic energy of the wind into electrical energy. Blowing wind rotates the blades of the turbine and the mechanism in it can generate electricity upon this rotation. Wind turbines have mainly two types. Horizontal axis and vertical axis wind turbines. They both have advantages and disadvantages but horizontal axis ones are more common due to higher efficiency.

Individual wind turbines
Individual turbines can be used for various purposes ranging from supplying energy for some small electrical devices where grid connection is not possible to meeting part of the energy demand of a house, a farm or even a production facility. Individual generation systems can be standalone or grid connected. The energy output from a standalone wind turbine can be directly used. However, in grid connected systems excess electricity produced can be supplied to the national grid system. In Ireland, you will have chance to be paid for the excess electricity you supply to the grid up to 500kW. Individual wind turbines can range from as small as 50W to as large as 3 MW, depending on their purpose of use.

Individual wind turbines for domestic use
Unlike large industrial wind turbines, these turbines have smaller dimensions that make them appropriate for using in relatively smaller areas. Their capacities range from as small as 50 watts to as high as 50 kilowatts and their prices vary depending on their sizes, types and manufacturers.

What to do for installing a small wind generation system?

First of all you have to decide whether you really need a small scale wind turbine for your energy needs. Sometimes just saving some energy can lower your bills but if the reason for considering a small turbine is being in off-grid areas you can proceed to the other steps. Inspect your site or your building (for rooftop turbines) to see whether it is appropriate for installing a wind turbine. You should have enough space to install a turbine without the wind being blocked by other buildings or obstacles. Determine your energy needs. Your utility bills will probably be your best references. See if the place you will install your turbine is windy enough. You can always find wind measurement data in wind energy associations’ websites for your area. Depending on your energy requirement and the wind potential in your area, decide the capacity and type of the turbine you will need. Your small scale wind system is expected to have a ROI period of maximum fifteen years. Economic lifetime of a small wind turbine without changing the main elements is estimated to be about twenty years and proper maintenance will increase this. However, maintenance needs of small wind turbines are expected to be minimal. Get any permits required in your area. You will probably need a contractor for erection, assembly, electrical connections of your wind turbine. However, if your turbine is micro scale, you can do these jobs by yourself as well. You can find domestic scale wind turbines and also 400W or 1 kW self installed turbines and accessories on windturbines.ie.

Individual wind turbines for industrial uses, i.e. factory sites
Turbines for industrial uses have capacities between 500kW to 3 MW. You will be able to generate electricity for wind speeds between 3 m/s and 25 m/s. For times that the wind is not blowing, one can still get electricity from the grid. This will result in additional revenue in addition to your reduced electricity bills.

Steps towards a wind turbine installation in your factory site:
The steps that should be made for installing an industrial scale wind turbine are approximately the same as those for installing a domestic turbine. The only difference is that they require more expertise. So it would be a good idea to take a turnkey service from an expert company in order not to experience any problems. The stages for a turbine installation are outlined below:

Wind Measurement: As your annual electricity generation depends mainly on wind speed, this step is of vital importance to be able to forecast your energy production. You can never know what you will generate without knowing what you have in hand. Feasibility studies: This will be a detailed study to let you know whether your proposed system will be a feasible project or not. Grid connection studies: This step assesses grid connection possibilities for your proposed wind turbine. Permission: Planning and installation of your wind turbine will require some permits on planning stage and during installation. Failure to get these permits may result in legal enforcement. Project budget planning: What you will need to spend for your wind turbine project from beginning to the end is an important item in any kind of planning for business. Procurement, commissioning and installation: All your equipment and staff needs for a turnkey project. Post-sales services: Issues like warranty, technical service, and maintenance. Aidan Doran is a freelance author who writes about various Energy related subjects. There are options available that will let you take advantage of the wind blowing over you no matter where live.

Vertical Axis Wind Turbines (VAWT) are systems that have helical shaped blades mounted vertically on the generator. They are specifically designed to address the unique problems associated with producing electricity in urban or suburban areas where often a horizontal wind becomes vertical when it encounters the face of a building. The helical shaped blades of the VAWT system utilizes vertical or horizontal wind bursts blowing from any direction (omni-directional). This makes it more efficient in these areas than the traditional roof mounted Horizontal Axis Wind Turbine (HAWT) available in most home wind power systems.

The HAWT systems work well in more open settings, a rural area without trees or surrounding buildings that break up the flow of wind coming to the blades. There are a number of smaller designs built specifically for home use, a lot of these are DIY kits that allow you to set up the system yourself, saving on the cost of professional installation.

Studies have shown vertical systems generate energy at a lower wind threshold than a comparable horizontal turbine. They also will produce power past the point that the increasing wind causes the blades of a horizontal turbine to feather to prevent damage from over powering the system. The larger, helical designed, slower rotating blades are also more visible to birds than the thinner propeller style of wind vanes used in a horizontal axis system. The Savonos style of vertical axis wind turbines can offer magnetic levitation instead of traditional ball bearings in the generator to blade interface, drastically reducing friction. The less friction, the less energy needed to turn the blades allowing the system to operate in lower winds.

Vertical versus horizontal. Which system to use? Each has their own pluses and minuses, and no one type will be perfect in all wind conditions for all sites.

Learn about the alternatives before purchasing. Start with the Internet to learn about the options, including information on siting, required permits and net metering available to add your system to the power grid. Knowledge is power. Your research will help you on your journey towards energy self-suffiency and improving your environment.

From San Francisco to New York City, rooftop wind turbines are hitting the home front. Rooftop wind turbines are being installed on both homes and businesses at an unprecedented rate due to several factors including the desire to save electricity, cut down owns dependency upon fossil fuels and as a visible symbol that one is doing their part to go green.

Critics of rooftop wind turbines say that they simply don't work or don't work as well as advertised. The critics are right in some instances and that is why the consumer needs to know what they are getting into and what to watch out for before investing in a rooftop wind turbine.

Some of the factors that will influence the output of the rooftop wind turbine include the design itself (horizontal or vertical axis), the kilowatt rating of the generator, where the rooftop wind turbine is placed, the angle or pitch of the roof, how much wind the region provides and any obstructions that may block the wind.

The design of the rooftop wind turbine is important for several reasons. Aesthetics is one of the larger reasons homeowners today would want to put a renewable energy generator atop their houses. Also, rooftop wind generators can be a status symbol that one is doing one's part to help the environment, create jobs for others and lower bills in these tough economic times.

Some wind turbines make more noise than others. The biggest complaint about a series of rooftop wind turbines placed at the Logan International Airport in Boston has been from an office worker below that says they make too much noise.

As I've stated in other sections of this website, celebrities like Jay Leno and Ed Begley, Jr. have decided to place rooftop wind turbines on their homes and garages. In both cases vertical axis magnetic wind turbines were chosen to fill the bill.

Some homeowners state that vertical axis wind turbines in general are a little quieter than their horizontal axis counterparts. Rooftop wind turbines generally come with a kilowatt (kW) rating such as 5 kW, 10 kW or 20 kW that reflects how much electricity one can expect it to generate for one's home or business. It is important to either have a large enough rooftop wind generator or several that add up to enough in order to provide the needed power.

Some rooftop wind turbines will work more favorably when on the edge of a rooftop, such as one that is long and flat (sort of like being on the edge of a cliff with an updraft). Others, however, on roofs with more angle or pitch will work more favorably in a higher location. Finding the right spot on the rooftop can add 5 to 40-percent more efficiency in electricity generation.

One of the most obvious points is for home and business owners in rather windless areas to not buy rooftop wind turbines but rather opt for other alternative energy resources. Wind maps may help some determine if there is enough regional wind to justify the purchase of building of a rooftop wind turbine. Buying an inexpensive anemometer and tracking results is also helpful before making a decision.

A less obvious issue when deciding on putting up a rooftop wind generator may be any obstructions current or future that could block the full wind from getting to the generator. Trees, other buildings, hillsides or even large vehicles can deflect the wind away from the turbine. If the rooftop is inside a city filled with buildings the wind path can become quite tricky as it may bounce from one structure to the next causing turbulence and an inconsistent flow.

Near homes, neighbors' trees grow and leaf out, people may put up a second story or business may build structure in close proximity to homes which all may impact rooftop wind turbines. The important thing is to think about as may variables as possible when deciding if a rooftop wind turbine makes sense and the location that fits well.

That said, many people are now rolling back their electrical meters using rooftop wind turbines. Manufacturers of these turbines are busier than ever before. With a little forethought and planning, a rooftop wind turbine may make sense (and dollars) for homes and businesses across the nation. So, what are you waiting for? The time is now just like the name of this website indicates.

You may already be familiar with wind turbines, but did you that are actually two types: Vertical and Horizontal. They each perform differnt functions, and both have their advantages and disadvantages. To decide which one is the best for you, look at your needs. Both share the same common factor as they produce energy by using the wind, except that they do it differently. The main rotor shaft in a Vertical Axis Turbine runs vertically rather than horizontally, hence the name. There are of course advantages and disadvantages for it being in this direction. One of the best advantages is that the gearbox can be placed at the bottom of the turbine, which is not possible in a horizontal turbine, so the top of the tower does not carry all the weight.
Another advantage of Vertical Axis Wind Turbines is that it does not have to face in the wind's direction. The disadvantage is that it produces smaller amounts of energy than a horizontal turbine, and if the turbine is running in the same direction that the wind is blowing you can get pulsating torques through each turn of the turbine.
Types of Vertical Axis Wind Turbines
1. The newest type of turbine out at the moment is a windmill which has a rotation sail. When it is in operation the sails look like those you find on a ship, that expand or contract according to the change of winds. Each has three sails where the speed is controlled by a magnetic counter which expands or contracts the sails as needed. To minimise the damage to the sails there is a control unit for this purpose. The sails can tear during a large storm but the frame is very durable.
2. There are aerodynamic turbines with blades just like a plane made of airfoil base in order to capture the wind's energy. They are so designed to catch this artificial current of kinetic energy to the centre. A very effective wind turbine it runs at full capacity most of the time to utilise all the wind energy by redirecting and lifting it upwards to the turbines there. It not only responds to the wind but also free flowing water systems such as creeks, rivers, streams and oceans.
3. Darrieus Wind Turbines are known to be efficient but they are big machines for their shape and size. Because a lot of cyclic stress that is put on the tower it does tend to wear out sooner. It consists of three blades which are shaped like loops which connect to the top and bottom of the axle, and often called the "eggbeater windmill" because that is what it resembles. They are connected from the ground upwards by large external structures which hold it up.
4. The Giromill consists of three vertical blades and was based on the patent of the Darrieus design. It is very low on maintenance as it self starting. The blades of strong, light material which are more robust to cope with the stresses placed upon them. They require less blade speed to channel energy with each turn of the blades as they are very high performing.
5. Savonius Wind Turbine mills usually consist of two scoops which convert windpower into torque on a rotating shaft. There also some which are self starting and feature three scoops. They are quite similar looking to helicopter blades except they are bent in a certain style and shape to provide enough energy to be of use.
6. The blades of Windstar Turbines are straight and made of aluminium. They are attached to either end of a central rotating shaft. There are a number of rotors with their own unique dual braking system of pneumatic disc brakes and blade pitch. Windstar Turbines were designed for locations with stronger winds.
7. Vertical Axis Wind Turbines have many advantages as the running costs are low and they are easier to maintain. They can almost withstand any type of low or high wind. They are smaller which means they can be transported easier. The disadvantages are that producing efficient energy from winds takes twice as much time. The turbines have to be installed on flat land and some models require guide wires, which adds more stress to the bottom of the tower; and they have a low starting torque. A consumer has to look at a design that is suitable for them by deciding on the best one for their needs.

In the United States wind energy is the second biggest source of new energy outpaced only by natural gas. At the end of 2007 wind turbines were producing over 16000 megawatts of electric power and nearly one third of that capacity was installed in 2007. In 2008 about 1% of the united States electric power will be supplied by wind energy. Most of this of course is from large commercial wind turbines but an ever increasing amount is coming from small wind turbines installed by individuals. The home wind turbine is definitely coming into its own as more and more people realise that something must be done to decrease our dependence on electric power supplied by fossil fuel burning generating stations. Gas and coal powered electric power production has increased dramatically over the years and emissions from the fuels burnt in these facilities is a major source of atmospheric pollution.
Wind power by comparision is absolutely clean and the only objectiion to it,voiced by some people,is visual pollution from the arrays of wind turbines necessary for large scale power production. However the residential wind turbine poses no such problems. Relatively small and unobtrusive home wind turbines including vertical axis wind turbines are the key to small scale wind power generation. A combination of home solar panels-wind turbines can produce much of the power required by the average home. Small wind powered turbines are manufactured by a number of companies and can be readily set up either as a rooftop wind turbine or mounted on its own small tower. The recommended tower height is about 30 feet. These are relatively expensive but will pay for themselves in the course of time.
If you know how to build a wind turbine your home wind turbine will cost much less and fortunately this is fairly easy to do. Plans and instructions showing how to build your own wind turbine are readily available and thousands of people have built their own home made wind turbine. You will often be told that strong winds are needed for wind power generation. This is absolutely not so. Even gentle breezes will produce power which is stored in batteries till needed.
If you live far from electric power lines you either get by with no electric power or generate your own. Gasoline powered generators will do the job but they are expensive to run and heavy polluters. You may be fortunate enough to have a stream which can generate power for you using a water power system but these are usually difficult to build and expensive. In most situations a wind turbine is the best answer. You can in fact build your own wind turbine for much less than the price of a commercial model. You could install two or three of them and have plenty of power for all purposes. Building your own home wind turbine is a fairly simple project which the average home workshopper can easily manage. Wind power is the coming thing and will save you money as well as reducing atmospheric pollution. Why not try it?Like to know how to build your own low cost wind turbine easily?

Wind energy is an environmentally inert, clean, and inexhaustible source of electric power that, as it turns out, is really just another form of solar energy. The sun creates wind by its uneven heating of the planet's atmosphere. It's moderated by the earth's rotation and irregularities in its surface. The planet's terrain, water bodies, and vegetation then affect the wind flow patterns. With the invention of wind turbines, we can now harness the wind's energy and use it instead of purchasing electricity from the utility companies that are derived from non-renewable sources.

The easiest way to understand how wind turbines work is to think of a fan operating in reverse ? rather than electricity spinning the blades and thus generating wind, the wind spins the blades, thereby generating electricity.

Breaking it down to it's simplest components, a wind turbine operates as follows:

the wind turns the blades

the blades spin a shaft

the shaft connects to a generator

the generator produces electricity

To expand on that simplification, the turbine's blades are connected to a hub that's mounted atop a turning shaft which runs into a gear transmission box that increases the turning speed which, in turn, is connected to a high speed shaft that cranks the generator. If the wind speeds get too high, a brake is deployed to slow the blades down and prevent damage being done to the system.

There are two basic types of wind turbine:

horizontal axis wind turbines: the kind most commonly in use today and the focus of U.S.
Department of Energy research on wind power, these come in two varieties ?

2-blade horizontal axis turbines spin downwind

3-blade horizontal axis turbines spin upwind

vertical axis wind turbines

The size of a wind turbine will influence its power generating capacity, with the smaller windmills that produce under 50 kilowatts being the type most commonly used to power water pumps, telecom dishes, and homes.

In an innovative advancement known as hybrid wind systems, these smaller turbines are also being used in combination with solar (photovoltaic) systems, rechargeable deep-cycle batteries, and diesel generators to provide storable, on-demand power in more remote, off-the-grid places.

In most residential situations, a wind turbine is used as a supplemental source of power in combination with local, on-the-grid, utility power. There is something called a cut-in speed (7-10 miles per hour), below which the wind turbine will cease to provide an output, and the utility grid provides the structure's power. Above the cut-in speed, the wind turbine kicks in and the grid power supply is proportionately reduced (depending on the structure's energy draw at the given moment).

If the output produced by the wind turbine exceeds the draw from the structure (and/or storage devices, like batteries), the excess power is then sold back to the pubic utility company. Use of wind energy can reduce a residence's energy costs by, on average, 50-90%, though these numbers are influenced by a variety of factors and, as such, can fluctuate greatly.

In a typical residence that uses under 10,000 kilowatt hours per year of electric power, a 5-15 kilowatt wind turbine should more than suffice. This type of system can run anywhere from $6,000-$22,000 to install, depending on a variety of factors, including: its size, your intended application, and any service contracts entered into with the manufacturer.

Being that certain situations (such as in the city) make personal wind power use an unviable option, a general rule of thumb is to consider installing your own wind power system if and only if you pay at least 10 cents per kilowatt hour and your location's average wind speeds exceed 10 miles per hour.

The larger wind turbines have capacities upwards of 50 kilowatts, running these days into the several-megawatt range. These windmills, known as utility scale turbines, can be grouped together and connected to central lines for transmitting and distributing in bulk to the local utility grids that, in turn, sell that power to homes and businesses across the land. These are called wind power plants or wind farms.
