Wind turbines are the best answer to the high and rising cost of energy. Electricity created from wind power is the best answer to one of today's most serious problems--the high cost of fossil fuels.
There are other ideas which may help of course. Solar power is clean but,at the present time, solar panels are quite high priced and have limited power output. Their best use is probably as an addition to wind power production. They can be used as roof panels on a building and will supply additional power.
Nuclear power is another source and this form of power is being used in many places around the globe. The cost to build nuclear power plants is very high however and there is a lot of public opposition to their use after the Three Mile Island and Chernobyl disasters.
Nuclear power stations will probably be a large part of future power supply around the world. If well built with all necessary safeguards they have been shown to be dependable and safe.
Wind power is at present the best all around power source for small scale power generation. Small individually owned wind power turbines can supply a large portion of our power requirements in the years immediately ahead.
Many companies are now offering wind turbine generators for sale to the general public. They are being installed by town and country property owners in ever growing numbers.
An alternative is to build a wind turbine, from available plans,at a very big cost saving. Any home owner or farmer in city or country may use this type of low cost power and be completely independent of the local power utility.
It is not even necessary to have high winds all the time. Even gentle breezes will generate some power. This power can be stored in batteries for future use.
A very good wind turbine power generator can be built using new or used auto parts. It may be installed on a roof or on its own tower. The construction of a turbine from available plans and instructions is really quite simple. The average person who can use simple tools will have no trouble in building one or more of these wind generators.
Excess power which is produced can be sold to the local power utility in many places. This type of wind turbine or windmill was much used on farms in the 1930-1950s era and was proven to be reliable. Two or three of them can be built to supply all the power needed and this can be stored in batteries till needed for use. Build it and the wind will come-- and bring free power along with it for your use.

With high electricity bills and concerns for the environment, many people look for alternative sources of energy. One of the most popular and easy to install is a wind generator. But how do wind turbines work? The process is quite simple, really, and looks a lot like the old grain windmills with, of course, a lot of technology advances added over the years. The basic process on how wind turbines work goes like this:

the wind blowing moves the blades the blades turning move a rotational shaft the energy produced goes to a generator to turn it into electricity the DC electricity is then stored in batteries a cable drives it to a DC/AC inverter so you can use it for your AC appliances

As you can see, it's an easy process, which is a reason why so many people have had no difficulty in building their own wind generators with a basic understanding on how do wind turbines work. Nevertheless, before starting on your wind generator project, here is some information you might find useful. First, keep in mind that it is a good thing to verify different locations where you're planning to install your wind turbine(s). Checking the strength of the wind and its direction will allow you to find the best and most efficient location for you. Also, it might be beneficial to get this information at different heights, as the wind blows usually stronger on higher grounds. It's pretty easy to adjust the size of the pole holding the wind turbine to fit what suits you best.

Keep in mind that, depending on where you live, the Government might allow grants or some type of tax benefits to people building alternative sources of energy. Making some research on the subject might enable you to build your wind turbines at a fraction of the cost and is well worth the effort of looking for information on the subject. Oh, and look for the information yourself; don't rely only on a friend or neighbor telling you about it, as he might have been misinformed.

Finally, know that a basic knowledge on how do wind turbines work is almost all you need to get started. And the good news is that many DIY kits are available, explaining you in detail how to proceed to build your own wind turbine, making the project easier to do than ever.

A word of caution, however: not all guides are created equal. In order to save you time and money, it's a good idea to check some reviews made by professionals and consumers alike. It'll make the experience much more agreeable, knowing you've chosen the best guide available. So get started today, and you'll find yourself looking forward receiving your electricity bill with a broad smile!

Building your own wind turbine for your home is very easy. There are a lot of manuals available that you can download and for your convenience we have reviewed the top three.
When we talk about Alternative Energy, we are referring to alternatives to Fossil Fuels. Ideally Alternative Energy Sources would be renewable for an indefinite time. The Environment is being constantly damaged by the use of Fossil Fuels and the future harm, which includes the massive increase in Greenhouse Gasses, is something we all need to be made aware of. Alternative Energy Sources would not harm the environment in any way, making them safer for the Planet, and making a much, much cleaner option.

Alternative Energy would be self sustaining, never run out, never become expensive and be readily available for everyone. It is only a matter of time before the large Energy Companies adopt a more environmentally friendly position and actively become involved in the search for Alternative Energy Sources.

The Alternative Energy options being examined today are Wind Power, Solar Power, Water Power, Biomass Power, Geothermal Power and even Tidal Power. Whilst some of theses options have a visible impact on the environment, the overall impact is a negative one as there will be no damage to the environment.

Many of these Alternative Energy options have been used, on small scales, for many years. Wind Power in Holland to drive Windmills. Water Power to drive Water Mills to produce such things as flour, and more.

Today we are used to seeing Solar Power panels taking light from the sun and converting it into energy that will heat our houses, produce hot water and more. Solar Power is also used in places such as swimming pools. This Alternative Energy source is harnessed by covers over the pool that collect the light, convert it and help keep the water warm.

In many parts of the world Geothermal Energy is is used to heat homes. In Greenland most homes are heated by Geothermal Power. Though most Geothermal sites are located near Volcanic regions, some are not. This Alternative Energy source is totally renewable and cheap to produce.

Another Alternative Energy Source is Tidal Power. I use this title to cover Tides, Rivers and Dams. Dams have a one-way system. Water is, basically, stored behind its huge walls and allowed to run through its systems driving huge turbines that produce massive amounts of renewable electricity we all use daily. Tidal Power is mostly two-way. Building a Dam across a River or Estuary, turbines or dynamos are built into the design. They produce power when the tide goes out, and produces power when the tide comes in. There is a lack of power production at both bottom and top tides , called slack tide , but this Alternative Energy Source is already in successful use in many Countries around the World, and a proposed Severn Estuary Barrier is soon to be built near my home in Barry in South Wales UK., producing enough Alternative Energy to power a city entirely, day in - day out, forever whilst the tides run.

These are just a few of the many Alternative Energy Sources being examined today. All these Alternative Energy options must be looked at and perfected and put into use very, very shortly or we will do, if we havent already done, irrepairable damage to the Environment. I do wonder what my children, and their children, will think of us in the near-future. Will they curse us or bless us? Its up to us. Its up to us today.

Author Bio: The Author is passionate about Alternative Energy.
Wind power is conversion of energy from the wind to be used productively in many ways. There are many machines, wind turbines, which transform the kinetic energy of the wind into mechanical energy by converting it. The mechanical energy then works with the kinetic energy so that it becomes balanced into a mechanical system. Once this mechanical energy is turned into electricity this system is then known as a wind turbine.
Horizontal Axis and Vertical Axis are the two different types of wind turbines that can be found. The Horizontal Axis Wind Turbine is the more popular of the two and features a main rotor shaft and a generator which are located at the top of the turbine. There is a gearbox attached to most of these turbines, so that more electricity can be generated by the quicker turning of the blades. The turbine are tall towers with blades which create turbulence for power, and turn either upwards or downwards. In high winds, upward blades can crack and breakdown as they are not able to withstand these conditions for too long. Downward blades are in line and face the wind so they last longer. They are even durable against the high winds so do not break which helps to keep down the cost.
The Different Types of Horizontal Axis Wind Turbines
Windmills - They usually consist of four or more blades that are normally short. There are some that are made up of wood and were first used to grind up grain. Winds rotate the mechanism of the blades which turned a mill that the grains ran through so that it was crushed.
Rural Windmills - These originated from Australia and were later built all over the U.S.A. Farmers found these windmills useful in pumping water into the fields and electricity for the barns. There are several blades on this type of windmill, which are still in use today and can be seen in the fields. So that electricity could be carried for lighting or even a radio, they were constructed using metal.
Modern Turbines - These are used today and what we see standing in our fields. The features are of three blades which become pointed towards the ends. The reasons for this unusual shape is after trials and testing, they proved to be the strongest for exceeding up to 6 times more wind velocity, which allowed for high efficiency and was more reliable.
This sort of wind turbine has many advantages including being bendable, durable, it has stability, is strong and also tall. On the other end, the disadvantages are that they are not as in huge demand, they are unable to operate if they are too close to the ground, installing them is a difficult job as well as transporting them by sea. There are also concerns that they can affect radar, and they can suffer from strutual damage during high storms and with wear and tear.
So as you can see, there are good and bad points to buying and installing these types of turbines. They do work so whether you choose to have one or several if you own a field is up to you. They are good to help generate electricity and many other things that we would might well have to do without.

With society slowly moving towards a cleaner and greener planet, alternative energy is being pushed more and more into the spotlight. Wind power currently comes in second only to natural gas as a renewable source of energy. Last year there was over 1700 megawatts of power product by wind turbines. This year it wind power is expected to account for about 1.5% of the US power needs. Commercial wind farms will account for most of this energy however residential wind turbines are becoming more and more popular and are slowly helping to reduce harmful emissions which tend to pollute our atmosphere; this is why more people want to know how to build a wind turbine.Wind power is a very clean source of energy, especially when compared to fossil fuel energy which is the main stay in today's world. Usually the only objection to wind turbines is their so called "visual pollution" and sometimes even the noise that they create. This however is not the case with residential wind turbines. Today's wind turbines are very compact thanks to technology and they can contribute quite considerably to the overall household energy consumption which in turn saves you money. In fact if you combine it with a solar power unit you could quite easily power your average sized home. While there are household commercial units available, with the advent of the internet there are a number of guides that can easily show you how to build a wind turbine and often at a cost of less than $200.Some people think that if you are planning on installing a wind turbine at your home that you have to be in an open area so you can get a maximum amount of wind hitting your turbine, this however is not the case as even the smallest amount of breeze can be enough to generate so electricity which will be stored in the battery units. The amount of energy that you can produce is a combination of wind flow and design. Obviously the more wind that the wind turbine is exposed to, the more energy that it can generate and the more energy that can be stored in its batteries. However the traditional windmill design that most people are familiar with isn't the only design. Roof top mounted wind turbines are comparably small units which do not use the traditional tower as these turbines are designed to be used in relatively sheltered or built up areas where there is not a good wind flow.If you live out in the country, these units can be fantastic for you especially if you are prone to having power outages and don't like to use your gasoline generator. The great thing about learning how to build a wind turbine is that you can make more than one turbine for your home which of course means that you will generate more power for your home which in turn means that you will save more money by cutting your power costs.

During the old hot rodding days, oil was king. It was also only about 25 cents a gallon, and everyone thought there was an endless supply. Then we were hit with the oil shock of the seventies, and we realized that there was not an endless supply of oil (only of lines at the gas tanks) and we had to change our ways. Big, gas guzzling cars had to give way to economy models, and many of the traditional car companies suffered. But continued hish oil usage still threatens the supply.

This fact has forced the world to look at alternative sources of energy to fuel our vehicles. What knd of alternatives are suitable to running cars? Let's have a look at the facts.

There are many forms of alternative energy, primarily from the forces of the earth: water (tidal or hydroelectric), air, waste (biomass), the sun and the earth itself. But currently, we only meet 10% of our energy needs through these alternative natural sources. Coal, gas and nuclear fuel supplies 88% of our needs, and oil 2% For vehicles, however, oil is by far the biggest source of power. Diesel and gas oils powers most of the cars, trucks and SuVs on the roads today. Biodiesel fuel such as vegetable oil, methanol and ethanol are starting to be used in some buses. Using the same logic, we should be able to make our cars into mini-windmills or mini solar panels. But this use is limited and we nee to find a longer-range solution.

What does the future hold?

Using alternative energy directly in cars is not practical. What' the solution, if not windmills and solar panels? Hydogen as a source of fuel for vehicles has proven to be the most viable. Many hydrogen powerd vehicles exist today, and more are being developed.

How do we involve alternative energy more in our lives? Hydrogen as a source of power is extracted form a number of different natural resources, such as water, biomass, coal and methane. The best source is water and many cars today are being run on fuel cells that extract hydrogen from water.

There are many processes to extract hydrogen molecules. But, in general, all of these processes require electricity tofunction. As the world's population grows, the demand for power and energy grows with it. That will help the popularity of hydrogen power, but this type of alternative power will eventually be replaced by other, more efficient types of alternative energy.

So the quest for other, better energy sources for our vehicles will continue. We may see the day when an extremely powerful solar cell or roof mounted turbine will power a car for miles.

For now, the present problem of finding alternative energy solutions to power our vehicles continues. The task is large, but it is certainly is achievable.

You may already be familiar with wind turbines, but did you that are actually two types: Vertical and Horizontal. They each perform differnt functions, and both have their advantages and disadvantages. To decide which one is the best for you, look at your needs. Both share the same common factor as they produce energy by using the wind, except that they do it differently. The main rotor shaft in a Vertical Axis Turbine runs vertically rather than horizontally, hence the name. There are of course advantages and disadvantages for it being in this direction. One of the best advantages is that the gearbox can be placed at the bottom of the turbine, which is not possible in a horizontal turbine, so the top of the tower does not carry all the weight.
Another advantage of Vertical Axis Wind Turbines is that it does not have to face in the wind's direction. The disadvantage is that it produces smaller amounts of energy than a horizontal turbine, and if the turbine is running in the same direction that the wind is blowing you can get pulsating torques through each turn of the turbine.
Types of Vertical Axis Wind Turbines
1. The newest type of turbine out at the moment is a windmill which has a rotation sail. When it is in operation the sails look like those you find on a ship, that expand or contract according to the change of winds. Each has three sails where the speed is controlled by a magnetic counter which expands or contracts the sails as needed. To minimise the damage to the sails there is a control unit for this purpose. The sails can tear during a large storm but the frame is very durable.
2. There are aerodynamic turbines with blades just like a plane made of airfoil base in order to capture the wind's energy. They are so designed to catch this artificial current of kinetic energy to the centre. A very effective wind turbine it runs at full capacity most of the time to utilise all the wind energy by redirecting and lifting it upwards to the turbines there. It not only responds to the wind but also free flowing water systems such as creeks, rivers, streams and oceans.
3. Darrieus Wind Turbines are known to be efficient but they are big machines for their shape and size. Because a lot of cyclic stress that is put on the tower it does tend to wear out sooner. It consists of three blades which are shaped like loops which connect to the top and bottom of the axle, and often called the "eggbeater windmill" because that is what it resembles. They are connected from the ground upwards by large external structures which hold it up.
4. The Giromill consists of three vertical blades and was based on the patent of the Darrieus design. It is very low on maintenance as it self starting. The blades of strong, light material which are more robust to cope with the stresses placed upon them. They require less blade speed to channel energy with each turn of the blades as they are very high performing.
5. Savonius Wind Turbine mills usually consist of two scoops which convert windpower into torque on a rotating shaft. There also some which are self starting and feature three scoops. They are quite similar looking to helicopter blades except they are bent in a certain style and shape to provide enough energy to be of use.
6. The blades of Windstar Turbines are straight and made of aluminium. They are attached to either end of a central rotating shaft. There are a number of rotors with their own unique dual braking system of pneumatic disc brakes and blade pitch. Windstar Turbines were designed for locations with stronger winds.
7. Vertical Axis Wind Turbines have many advantages as the running costs are low and they are easier to maintain. They can almost withstand any type of low or high wind. They are smaller which means they can be transported easier. The disadvantages are that producing efficient energy from winds takes twice as much time. The turbines have to be installed on flat land and some models require guide wires, which adds more stress to the bottom of the tower; and they have a low starting torque. A consumer has to look at a design that is suitable for them by deciding on the best one for their needs.

When one thinks of a home wind turbine, what most probably comes to mind is a gigantic tower with jumbo-jet sized spinning blades. But, with everyone becoming more aware of conserving energy, the technology has advanced so much that it is now possible to have your own small-scale wind turbine at home. Even better is the opportunity for us to make our own, without having to rely on the professionals.

So, how does a home wind turbine make power?

A home wind turbine makes power by spinning a generator. The generator is attached to the rotor, made up of three aerodynamic blades, that is then attached to a tower. To keep the turbine facing the wind, the rotor has a tail, that acts as a weather vain.

The generator is basically an electric motor. As the coils in the motor spin past the magnets, an electric current is produced. The power produced is stored in batteries, which are connected to an inverter to change the direct current to alternating current, which can then be used to power your home. The advancement of motor efficiency, is the reason wind turbines have become so popular for home use.

Depending on your area's wind conditions, the tower can vary in length. If you live near the sea where it is windy, the tower can be shorter, but in low-wind areas the tower needs to be taller to catch as much wind possible.

Over time the blades have improved drastically as researchers developed lighter, stronger, more efficient blades, with the capability of turning even in the lightest breeze. Back in the day, wind turbines had five blades, and looked similar to windmill water pumps, but recently they have moved to three blades, taking the form of over-sized airplane rotors. Like the tower, the blades vary in size, according to your wind conditions and energy requirements.

While so far we have been explaining the typical horizontal axis wind turbine, there is another design that is starting to gain popularity for small-scale projects. It is the vertical axis wind turbine or VAWT. Very different to the standard horizontal axis turbine, the VAWT spins on a vertical axis, and almost looks like a waterwheel put on its side. Since the VAWT tends to operate low to ground, it needs far more wind to make it turn efficiently, so it is not the ideal option for homeowners or small businesses. The VAWT has also been accused by ecologists of interrupting and harming various migratory birds, making it less attractive for green enthusiasts.

Before going out and installing a wind turbine, it is best to ask yourself the following questions:

- How big is the property?

Wind turbines generally operate better in large areas that cover an acre. This is because wind flow is not deflected by any nearby buildings.

- What is the average wind speed?

The recommended wind speed should be at least eleven miles per hour, but if that isn't the case then you may have to use a taller tower and larger blades to catch higher altitude winds.

- What else can I use the wind turbine for?

If you could use the turbine for other purposes, such as pumping in water from outside, then it may be useful than you think. This is the reason you see so many windmills scattered over farms - they help pump water from reservoirs to the farmhouse.

- Does my house need a constant power supply?

This is why so many people want to get a small wind turbine in the first place - to keep the house powered during blackouts, and prevent economic losses. Although the wind turbine may not power the house all the time, it's stored power can be used in emergencies, when the utilities are just not enough.

Answering these questions will give you a good idea of how much power you need, how big the tower a blades need to be, and how much it would be worth investing to start making your own power at home.

The great thing about technology is that it is always improving. So much so that motors have become smaller, efficient and cheap enough for us to attach a few small turbines right on the roof, and produce the same power as a larger turbine on a tall tower.

Although professional home wind turbines can run into several thousands of dollars, it is possible to make your own for a tenth of the price, with components found at home and your local hardware store. Furthermore, the U.S. offers both state and federal tax credits that you can use to offset the installation cost. So not only will you reduce your electricity bill, but also your tax at the same time.

Tim McDonald and his wife have been living off the grid since June 2008. If you want to learn to make your own home wind turbine, get off the grid and save thousands on your electricity bills, then try Earth4Energy for free before you start any renewable energy project.
Article Source

Residential wind turbines are a wonderful model to produce a cheaper source of free energy. Knowing what to search for and where to buy one is essential in getting you started. If you are looking for a suitable residential wind turbine kit, the good news is that there is lots of places where you can do so. This is not something you can just get at a ironware store. Instead, a little searching have to be done first. In fact, the internet is one of the best places to find and buy residential wind turbines kits.

Assuming you have decided to purchase it online, there are a few points to check if it is a good bargain. You want to be positive you only purchase them online from a site that extends free transport though. Do not purchase them offline if the company does not provide free shipping. If not, the kit will be extremely costly with accumulated charges tallied on. On The Average, a rational price for a residential wind turbine should be around $300. If you find any sales where the cost deviates quite a bit you may want be be skeptical. It may be a scam.

A wind turbine is more commonly referred to as a windmill. It can also be referred to as a wind generator. Though the terms are used interchangeably, each is not the same as the other. What makes a wind turbine different from a windmill? For instance, a wind turbine converts wind energy into mechanical energy that can be further converted to electrical energy whereas a windmill will just use the mechanical energy as is. As a windmill does not convert the energy, it cannot really be considered a wind turbine even though the words are often used interchangeably.

Let's examine the different types of wind turbines. Wind turbines are classified based on their orientation. There are two basic kinds of wind turbines known as the Horizontal Axis Turbine and Vertical Axis Turbines. The Horizontal Axis turbine contains blades that rotate across a horizontal axis. Conversely, The Vertical Axis turbine rotates its blade on a vertical axis. The Horizontal Axis Wind Turbines are more popularly used in various parts of the world. This is because horizontal axis wind turbines are more efficient than the vertical ones.

The advantages of installing a residential wind turbine includes saving power, cost effective, environmental friendly and perpetual power supply.

Some advantages of wind turbines include:

Perpetual power supply - You do not have to be dependant solely on the government for your power supply. Endless supply of power means never having to deal with a power outage too! Saving Power- Wind turbines use wind energy to produce the same energy that we have to pay electric companies to use so we save power by not having to use regular electricity. Cost Effective - Because wind is free, the only actual costs a user incurs is in installing and maintaining the wind turbine. Environment Friendly - Wind turbines run on a natural energy source and are therefore not harmful to the environment.

The benefits of a wind turbine so attractive that everyone would want to install one, but if it is not correctly done, it can be quite bad. Before installing a wind turbine, do consider the following.

You must have at least an acre set aside to install it on. Make sure the average wind speed is about 11 miles per hour. Make sure the tower and base are ironclad. It is the wind turbulence that can mess up your wind turbine so take that into consideration as well. Make sure that the distance between the wind turbine's height and the wind generator and cells is optimal.

Even if you've already cut your electricity consumption to the bone, you're still reeling from your energy bill. If you're looking for a source of cheap electricity then you can turn to solar energy. Sunlight is plentiful and renewable and, even better, it's free. All you need is to look is avail of solar power kits to harness the power of the sun.

There are many solar power kits that you can avail of online. They will teach you how to make your own solar panels for less than $200 rather than spending the tens of thousands of dollars a solar panel installation would cost you. Kits use videos to teach you how to build the panels using materials readily available at local hardware stores. In addition, they will also teach you how to build a windmill as a backup cheap electricity system for days when there is no sun.

There are many solar power kits which will give you cheap electricity for your household needs, but which one is right for you? First, determine how easy the kit's instructions are to follow, since you may not have sufficient experience to follow more complicated procedures. Second, would you rather have a kit with all the basic materials already included? Although this may cost you more, it may be worth it to avoid the hassle of putting the materials you need together. Third, if you're more technical minded, you may just want to buy a book on assembling your own solar power system and create your own kit.

In the coming years, as oil reserves dwindle and electricity becomes more expensive, those who did not avail of solar power kits now may find themselves regretting the lost opportunity to have availed of a good source of cheap electricity earlier.

If you are concerned over global warming and want to shift your house's electrical system to a homemade renewable energy system, then you should consider using solar energy. It is clean, readily available and free. But if you just want a cheaper energy source, a homemade renewable energy system built using a do-it-yourself (DIY) solar power kit is also the answer for you. As an extra, a DIY solar power kit will also teach you how to build your own windmill to serve as a backup power source.

Before you start building your DIY solar power system, however, there is some preparatory work you need to do. First, you need to undertake a load analysis. The load analysis will establish how much electricity you use in a typical day. This information will determine how many solar power modules you need and how many batteries you should buy to store the homemade energy generated. Second, you need to undertake energy conservation measures in your household. You should realize that solar energy will not provide as much energy as being connected to a power grid, and thus, you should make your energy consumption as efficient as possible. Third, you should decide if you want a stand-alone solar energy system or if you want to remain connected to the grid. The advantage of remaining connected to the grid is that you can access your local utility's electricity at night, when your solar arrays are not generating power. Plus, if you produce enough electricity you can sell it to the grid and reduce your energy bill.

Whether you want to save money on your electricity usage or you want to save the earth, a homemade energy system using a DIY solar power kit is the right solution for you.

The Netherlands documents a history of windmills and turbines that played an important role as an alternative to water-driven systems. December 2009 witnessed the installation of 1,975 wind turbines in the Netherlands, each with a capacity of 2,221 MW. These were constructed in an effort to meet the target set by the EU of producing 9% of the total electricity from any renewable source by 2010. Utilization of electricity generated by wind turbines is not only environment-friendly but also a cost-effective option.

Monetary and Environmental Benefits of Wind Power

For decades, wind power has been used to pump water and grind grains. Turbines are used in the modern day to produce electricity, for individual use and for contribution to the utility power grid. In the present era, wind energy has become an attractive renewable energy source. It is the fastest growing energy technology in the world.

Turbines placed at strategic sites where there is abundance of strong, steady winds, can generate electricity inexpensively and without releasing pollutants into the air. No emissions are associated with harnessing wind energy for generating electricity. Moreover, it displaces CO2 and the other greenhouse gases that would have otherwise been involved in the production of fossil fuel-fired electricity.

However, the appropriate setting of wind farms is crucial to reducing negative impacts, in the form of bird collision with the turbines. In the past, noise pollution was a major drawback, but this too has been eliminated in the modern windmills.

Save Money by Harnessing Wind Power

Economic viability is the main advantage of wind power, at the individual and community level. While individuals save a lot of money on electricity bills by relying on wind energy, communities can diversify economies and enjoy increased dependence on local resources.

There are many who like owning or leasing their wind turbine operations, since it is a very lucrative option. The two main reasons for this are the fact that:

The electricity does not entail monthly payment to state authorities, since it is ‘home produced'.

There are revenues the owner receives in return for energy production. There are also tax savings as well as federal and state incentives involved in the process.

The incentives that the federal government has introduced for wind energy investors and which are available in most states are:

Low-interest loans

Exemption from property taxes

Accelerated depreciation rates for renewable energy equipment

Selecting a wind energy system is a very important purchase decision. There are no fixed purchase prices and companies decide the rates of their wind equipment. FrozCo2.com, a company focusing on developing green projects in an endeavor to save the planet, can aid in the purchase of such project.

"There are no passengers on Spaceship Earth. We are all crew". Marshall McLuhan, 1964

My colleague Ashank and I were listening to a presentation by Anmol, a bright young man whose firm had been engaged by Mastek, my company, to study our carbon footprint. We wanted to understand how much damage we were causing to the environment, and how we could reduce that damage. The discussions were very revealing.

We anticipated we would have a low carbon footprint - given the nature of our IT industry. We were wrong. We were actually causing almost 17,000 tons of CO2 to be spewed into the environment every year!

More than 60% of our emissions were due to electricity consumption - air-conditioning, lighting, and computers. Thirty percent were due to air travel - especially international travel. Anmol said this was pretty much in line with other software services companies.

We looked at what we could do to reduce our emissions. Since our new buildings were already equipped with state-of-the-art energy efficient equipment, we could at best save around 10% by changing desktops, lighting fixtures, and other such mechanisms.

We could trim another 10 percent by reducing air travel and persuading our people to switch off electrical appliances when not needed and share resources by using our space efficiently.

The other alternative was to invest in renewable energy - wind or solar energy. It was disappointing to learn that solar panels on our rooftops would hardly generate 10% of our energy requirements.

We could invest in windmills run by power companies in faraway locations, but even with government incentives this would require an investment of over Rs. 60 crores to meet our electricity requirements - a substantial sum.

E F Schumacher, the author of "Small is Beautiful," was once asked for political advice. "Plant more trees', he suggested. I asked the consultants about that, and they came back with some intriguing findings. They said planting 3 million trees would take care of our entire carbon footprint.

Moreover, as these trees grow, their ability to absorb CO2 emissions multiplies 4 times over 20 years. This would mean that planting these trees today might ensure Mastek's carbon neutrality for generations.

The main cost of planting and maintaining these trees is labor costs. Current prices are around Rs. 100 per tree but with scale, this cost can be substantially lower. In addition, if we use 'Shramdhaan' - volunteer efforts from Mastekeers, their friends and families, as well as others, we may even be able to bring the cost under Rs. 50 per tree.

This would bring the entire investment to a far more affordable at Rs. 15 crores. As time moves on, the trees will pay for themselves in energy savings. This exercise made me realize that we have a crying need for innovation - in renewable energy as well as reducing energy consumption in our appliances.

Further, while air travel has twice the energy consumption per passenger mile compared to a train, these emissions happen at 30,000 feet. That leads to a reflectivity factor of 2.0 times normal calculations. Hence, air travel is almost 4 times ecologically damaging as train travel.

In India, we may need to seriously look at introducing high-speed trains across peak corridors in order to reduce the need for air travel. We have the design talent in our IIT's and engineering colleges to make this happen. This is a call to all talented designers to give up your cushy non-design jobs and get cracking.

Do share your own data and insights on how we can be responsible corporations by neutralizing our carbon footprints.

Flood defence and combating flooding has been a preoccupation with mankind ever since the earliest hunter gatherers settled next to rivers and began farming. Flooding is an unfortunate by-product of our dependence on water and over the years a myriad of different methods of preventing flooding have been introduced with varying levels of success.

However, over the last century, some of the most ambitious and large scale flood defence schemes in history have been built to combat the constant threat that flood waters still pose to our villages, towns and cities that are built near rivers and seas.

Perhaps the largest and most elaborate flood defence schemes in history can be found in Holland and the Netherlands. Much of the Netherlands is built on reclaimed land from the sea, and for centuries the Dutch have been trying to prevent the sea claiming it back. Their most famous landmarks, the windmills were built for just such a purpose, however after the North Sea caused terrible flooding in 1953, the Dutch built the Delta Works, a series of 13 ambitious dams, the largest being the 9 kilometre Oosterscheldedam.

In London, the Thames Estuary has caused awful flooding in the past which led to the building of the Thames Barrier throughout the 1970’s and 80’s – it is one of the world’s largest moveable flood barriers that spans nearly half a mile.

Some large scale flood defence schemes have, despite huge cost, proved expensive failures. One such scheme is the hundreds of miles of levees and flood gates that were meant to protect New Orleans from flooding. However, after the devastating effects of Hurricane Katrina, it was obvious the system failed dramatically.

These large scale flood defences are only a small part of how most areas defend against flooding. One of the most common flood defences still in use is the common-or-garden sandbag which are nearly always deployed in times of rising sea water.

However, even the humble sandbag has had a twenty-first century makeover. Instant sandbags are now available that inflate with just water, doing away for the need for all that sand and the logistical headaches that it brings.

Unlike traditional sandbags that can take hours to fill, instant sandbags fill up in minutes, which means they can be stored flat and only taken out when needed – rather than having to fill traditional sandbags days in advance.

Using windmills for electricity is fast becoming one of the most popular methods of reducing domestic energy costs and at the same time reducing your carbon footprint by moving away from fossil fuels and beginning to become independent of the power companies for your energy sources.

The main reasons why windmills are becoming popular are:

1. Easy to Build

If you want to build your own energy source for your home, a windmill is certainly the most straight forward of the choices of clean renewable energy sources you can build yourself. Essentially a windmill turns the kinetic energy of the wind into mechanical energy which can then be converted into electrical energy to power your home.

To make the blades of the rotor you can take a 9” PVC pipe and cut it into 4 quadrants, which will be the blades. They will need to be refined for optimum performance but this is basically how your can make 4 rotor blades.

Next join the ends of your blades to the hub which can be bought for a small price from a hardware store or you can make your own. The hub will be the centre focal point of your windmill and will transfer the wind power from the blades to the generator.

Once you’ve joined the hub to the rotor blades you can mount the hub on the shaft of a DC motor which you can easily get in a hardware store or on ebay. The DC motor will need to be high current, high voltage and low RPM for optimum performance from your windmill.

Once you’ve got these basics of the windmill you can mount it on the tower and create a tail at the back of the axis holding the DC motor to ensure the windmill is always facing the wind.

2. Cost to Build

Another reason people are using windmills for electricity is simply the low cost to build one. All the basic parts needed to create your own windmill are easily sourced over the internet or at your local hardware store and will cost you less than $150 altogether. The most expensive item you’ll need is the DC motor which can be bought on ebay for around $40.

3. Completely Environmentally Friendly

With the onset of the energy crisis and global warming fast becoming a major issue around the world it is very important that we all take responsibility for reducing our carbon footprint and helping the environment to fight back. Using windmills for electricity does not exhaust any natural resources and wind energy is freely available all around the world. Once you’ve got winds of 10 mph or more you can take advantage of it’s energy.

Is it possible to build your own wind turbine? The shortest answer available to such a question is "yes".

A Primer On Alternative Power by admin
Thanks to the advent of alternative power, no longer must we rely on depleting the planet of its natural resources, burning fossil fuels that cause pollution of the atmosphere, depletion of the ozone layer, can potentially be unstable (as in nuclear energy), and continues to increase in cost year after year.

Wind Turbine Generators.
